suggestions on staining deck PIC

Hi,

Can someone give me some suggestions on staining this deck pictures included.

I recently painted the outside of the house with blue oil paint and planning on painting the red trim white.

I would like to stain the deck which is made out of pressure treated wood and has weathered and turned grey.

I was thinking of staining it with Wood Shield Solid Colour Deck & Siding Oil/Alkyd Stain. I was thinking of a darker blue for the deck floor and white for the balusters. Should the top rails be painted blue also and just the balusters white?

Should I be washing it with a bleach solution and TSP first. If so what is the proper amount of each to use?

Does anyone have other colour ideas I could stain it?

What color should I paint the doors?

What color should I paint the foundation?

I searched through my Better Homes and Gardens Landscape Solutions for an example of a deck revitalization that I remembered. In the 2003 Special Interest Publication they have a great example of a deck stained with two colors. The colors are a coffee brown opaque stain for the base, rafters and cross beams. And a sheer natural cedar for rest -- the balusters and floor.

This is the 2003 Landscape Solutions and is available for purchase. Hopefully the link works.

I am not so great with color, but in my opinion, I think you are envisioning too much blue. I do love your blue house though. Unfortunately I can't offer other suggestions. Hopefully some of the color experts out there can help.

What a sweet house! And I LOVE the huge deck.

Here are my thoughts:

I would keep the foundation a neutral gray and install plantings around the perimeter, which will cover the foundation.

I would stain the deck with a nice cedar stain, rather than add more blue and white.

For the doors, depending on how colorful you want to go, you could paint a light yellow or a lime green, and put windowboxes the same color as the door on the windows flanking the door.

OR (f you want a less "finished," more "rustic" look):

You could paint the door white, put white shutters on the windows, put windowboxes with colorful plantings, leave the deck the color it is and just landscape around the perimeter of it to bring color in.

Hiya Mary-Jane.. You could go with a solid but I am not a fan of them. The wood does look a bit aged in the picture. There are some decks that legitimize using a slid butm for me, the situation has to be extreme (like the lignin and pulp bwteen the grain completely eroded) For the most part a good cleaning with the right detergent will do the job. Brooklyn Steve - I did sand using the Ridgid ROS with 50 grit paper..... It was my first time doing a sanding job like this so I am not sure about my technique, but I was surprised by the fact that the pencil marks were a little difficult to remove. In order to really remove those pencil marks, I had to leave the sander in the same spot for a good while, sometimes on an angle to hit the pencil mark directly.... I was a little afraid that it would leave inconsistencies in the finish, so I just got off as much pencil as I could. The pencil marks aren't really obvious...and only really show on the lighter colored boards. As far as the rough spots, I did sand those too. After I was done sanding the deck felt pretty smooth. I didn't notice the rough spoits until I was wiping down the Penofin with the rag. On some of the boards, if I went one way the rag would glide across the board, if I went the other, you could feel the rag grip the board.... There was about a 3 week delay between sanding and stianing, so I don't know if that would've made a difference in the texture of the deck... Like you said......at this point........Anyway...... I'm confident over time the fuzzies, the pencil marks, the rough spots will all become a distant memory. now for that Tecate.

Are you talking about the deck railings or the deck floor? If it's the floor, do you know what wood was used? If it was cedar, (which is commonly used where I live) and not pressure treated lumber, then it will gray beautifully all on its own. If it's pressure treated, then you need to allow it to age a bit before staining - the stain mfgs recommend one year. I also think a gray would be the way to go. I wouldn't add color because your home has a very crisp palette that would be interrupted with the addition of another color. Do the railings in the same white as your trim - it will be knockout. You have a beautiful house! I was going to say a darling or cute house because it it seems smaller scale (meaning not 5000 sq ft!) but didn't want to offend. However it's just so darn cute! I hope you don't mind me going in a direction you didn't ask about..... Your shutters are the only element that seems off to me. The widow on the right does not need shutters at all - actually, none of them NEED shutters. You have nicely scaled trim that stands well on its own. The shutters on the left windows are way undersized and look odd - if you're going to use them, they need to be half the width of the total window opening. If you imagine closing the shutters you have, they would cover little more than the side trim. For proper scale, they should appear to be functional. Your entryway is spectacular.

As the saying goes, I feel your pain! Yes, "very mixed," as you put it, is a good summary of what "deck experts" say about staining. I've been researching it online quite a bit, and have talked with a couple of local vendors. I'm happy to correspond with you on the topic. Among the important considerations are: your location, what the deck is made of, and whether the deck is brand new or has been in place awhile. I live in rainy western WA and am building a small deck with kiln dried, red cedar. After reviewing a trillion or so websites, I've decided to use Flood brand oil based stain, likely semi-transparent but possibly semi-opaque (which other manufacturers refer to as "semi-solid"). In case you haven't seen it, I think this is a good article on the basics of wood stain: https://www.thisoldhouse.com/ideas/all-about-exterior-stain It might be worth noting in the above article: the potential fundamental failure of solid stains is peeling; the potential fundamental failure of semi-transparent and semi-solid stains is filming; in general, stains typically need maintenance every few years. And here's a good video, in my opinion, on the basics of cleaning and staining a weathered deck. I would agree with the discussions staying away from blue based stains. Blues and purples really can fade in the sun without a UV stablizer added. My house is purple, but I went with a US paint company that supplies chemical additives and preservatives to the paints based on a by-need basis. That's not always easy to find, and it looks like you are in a rural area. Even harder.

Your house is lovely. I love your metal roof. I bet it sounds fantastic when it rains!! I agree with some nice plantings around the base of your home and not to worry about staining or painting there. I stuccoed mine simply because we haven't been able to plant on two sides with concrete walkways/a driveway attached to the house. I can't wait for the day we can have that torn out and I can add plants! It will anchor the house to the landscape, and I think adding foundation plantings would do the same for you.

Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for all your help and suggestions. Now that I think of it.I agree it would be too much blue and white. I think I'll paint the trim on the house white and the doors. I'll also add some plantings next year.
As for the porch I'm going to stain it all the same colour. I guess a wood colour in a brown shade I still have to go and pick a colour.
Would I be best to go with a solid colour since it's aged and may last longer?
Someone told me not to go with solid stain they said it shows the wear quickly.
As anyone used solid stain if so what's your experience with it.
Postum I did post my question at the porch and deck forum.
