Different Patio Paver

I ran across these pavers at Lowe's several months back. Thought they might be good to paint and create "people"--I first thought about a pair of Raggedys or a garden lady. I could see painting it and adding some wood cutouts, silk flowers, etc.

Anyone ever painted this kind of paver? Got any ideas for using them?

They are very inexpensive just like the other pavers we have painted.

That should be excellent for painting people. I haven't seen those before. I'll have to check out my Lowe's.

I'm seeing a group of carolers for Christmas. What other upright creatures could you do. Maybe a penguin? ha Gingerbread people. Snowpeople. An angel. A ghost. I think the more you stare at it the more things you can imagine. A barbershop pole. ha A gumball machine. Gas pump. hahaha. This is fun. If you laid it on it's side and could attach some kind of wings it could be a butterfly body or some other kind of bug. Perhaps a fish. Keep staring at it Luvs. There's lots more lurking in there. ha

Wow! You are full of ideas there. Christmas carolers would be cute--too bad I can't make them different heights, that would look good. I can see it as a penguin, especially since it looks so "stiff" (duh, it IS stiff) I think I have some penguin patterns too. An angel or butterfly would be fairly easy too. I'm glad I asked for suggestions--thanks. Luvs

If you want a small tree at the right end of bed (near corner) then putting in a Hydrangea that's NOT a tree, won't work. You'll need to find another place for it. Earlier I recommended PG Hydrangea which can be grown as a small tree. Burning Bush, common Lilac or Philadelphus coronaria are other large shrubs that make good small, multi-trunk trees. For planting a large groundcover bed, you'd want to arrange plants in rows with the leading row in line with the front edge of the bed, but set back a uniform distance from it. Usually, the same spacing between plants works well as the front set back distance... so let's say for Hosta, 18". Then space them 18" apart in the row. 18" Behind that row is another row laid out in the same manner, except that you would place these plants not directly behind the first row, but offset them so that they are staggered relative to it. Continue the process until you have reached the back of the bed and filled it up. Since you are planting around trees, just don't place a Hosta where the tree is. You can come close, but not so close that you are struggling with tree roots (the tree being the Dogwood) as you don't want to disturb its ability to grow. When the Hosta grow, they will nestle around the tree trunks just fine. Though you PLAN the planting beginning with the first row, you'd actually install plants beginning with the last and work your way backward so you are not crushing installed Hosta as you plant more. That's the manner in which you'd approach laying out a normal large bed. Now let me contradict that. If your bed is only 4' deep from front to back, the above instructions would only allow you to place 2 rows in the bed. That'd work OK, but if you have sufficient Hosta and want a full look more quickly, keep the plant spacing the same, but adjust the row spacing so that you can fit in 3 rows...say each being 12" apart. (Spacing would now be 18" o.c. x 12" rows.) Whether you install whole Hosta clumps or split them up is a factor of How many you need vs. how many you have available. Split them if you're going to need a lot of Hosta or if the clumps are so huge they just need splitting.

The first guy at the stone place said to do it the way I did...allow about 1/4" per inch compaction. So I left 3 1/2 inches figuring 2 3/8 for the paver + 1 1/8 for the sand (after the 1 1/2" compacts) The second guy said that 1 1/2 inches will compact at least 3/4 inch. Usually a little bit off wouldn't matter, but since I'm lining up to the sidewalk I don't want a tripping hazard. I've already really compacted the base, using a vibratory plate compactor, and everything I've read says to use this again after the patio is laid. This is when I expect the sand to compact.

we had sort of the same type issue. We have a wooden deck on one side of the house, then this horrible dirt strip that wrapped around a patio and sidewalk to the front of the house. So we had to tie into an old concrete patio poured first, a newer brushed sidewalk poured some time later, and a wooden deck. We solved the thing by having new concrete poured over the entire dirt area. Then, a concrete restoration company came and stained all ages of concrete one color, taped it into random stones (you could do bricks or anything), stained it in about 4 colors, pulled up the tape and sealed the entire thing. It looks amazing, and was under $6000 in Southern California. This was about 700 sq. ft. You have a much smaller area, I think. I like the seating wall idea also!

Design Guidelines for a Small Paver Patio

I am laying down some pavers just to play around with design ideas, and I have a few photos showing the design elements below. I have some design questions. The basic design I want to pursue is to have a commercial paver patio and place a border around this of yellow real granite cobblestone. The cobblestone is too difficult to install and it would also be harder to walk on, so I am reserving it for strategic use as a border only, in order to make the patio look more custom than a pure paver design would suggest. So 90% of the patio will be commercial pavers, and maybe 10% will be a small border of cobblestones. The total patio dimensions are something around 10' x 10' (100 square feet). These cobblestones are about four inches cubed (4"x4"x4"), whereas the commercial pavers are Belgard Marseilles Stone (7"x7"x2"). The pavers serve as a walkway to a bench, from a walking path. Behind the bench, I have a small plastic storage bin that holds some accessories for the bench, like cushions which I want to keep out of the rain and elements. The questions: * What are some general design guidelines for how wide the patio should be, relative to the width of the bench that the patio is serving? I was figuring that the patio might extend about 12 inches on either side of the bench legs. Maybe more is better? * How should I provide the best base floor for the end pieces of the heavy concrete bench? The bench is made of concrete and the two end pieces are separate from the top piece. The bench is either bolted together, or some designs just use gravity to hold the heavy parts in place. As a result, the surface under the end pieces must be very flat and stable. If I put the end pieces on top of those patio pavers - which have an unfinished and rough textured surface - that is not an ideal platform for the bench. One solution would be to use a different paver design in just the area where the bench will live. I could use a paver that is perfectly flat in just the area where the bench is installed. But doing this will impact the aesthetics of the patio if the bench is later removed. I could lay some "flat" pavers down on top of the patio, thus providing a slightly elevated but relatively flatter surface for positioning the bench. But I am not sure that looks aesthetically pleasing, as those elevated pavers will be visible when the bench is in use. Another solution would be to "end" the patio just prior to the bench, then use a different paver install just under the bench end pieces. That would allow me to put those pavers in the ground and they would be better hidden while the bench is in use. But if the bench is removed later the pavers next to the patio might look a bit strange. One advantage to ending the patio prior to the bench install is that the cobblestone border of the patio would be fully visible on all four edges of the rectangular patio while viewing the patio and bench from the walking path. Otherwise, the back border of the patio would disappear behind the bench. * A similar question exists for the table surface in front of the bench, which is also made from concrete. Should I just attempt to stabilize it on top of the commercial pavers, or should I design in some flatter surface in the center of the patio and set up the table on that? I suppose I could put in some concrete tiles in that area with a pattern on them, to provide a kind of centerpiece to the patio. * In terms of the cobblestone border, I took one photo of the yellow tone cobblestones. I am thinking about sizing the border with two four-inch cobbles, creating approximately an eight-inch border section around the patio. What do others think of that use of the cobblestones? I could increase the border size to 12 inches or 16 inches. * I am also interested in opinions on possibly increasing the spacing between the cobbles in the border and planting ground cover there. If the groundcover takes off and overgrows the cobbles then that might tend to hide the natural beauty of the grain in the granite cobblestones.

Hi Nodakgal, I got your link, thank you so much. I've painted the square top pavers, just hadn't noticed these before. Another poster sent me pics of gingerbread men and a snowman too. I'll just have to make up my mind and get busy. I only bought two of them so far.

Since you are a painter too, hope you will check out our gallery section and the other posts on here, and then add some pics of projects you have painted too. The more the merrier. ;o)

LOL Girls, I painted til about 4 years ago and things have just not gotten done since then. Life gets in the way you know? My poor scrollsaw has cut very little wood and my paints have barely been out of the tote they are in. I miss it and some day would like to get back into it....just have no idea when is all. I have checked the gallery and the posts and you all do fantastic work!

I finally took a picture of my Santa. Now I painted him 5-6 years ago, before I was into sealing things so some of the paint is chipping off. I also mixed salt with the cream paint to make his hair and beard textured and that's coming off. I planned to make him a hat or something and never did. Sadly enough, this poor guy has been hiding behind the toilet in the half bath for the last few years...I have no clue WHY! LOL

Sweets, your Santa is just darling, love his little face. You can either repair him, or keep him "as is" and say he's antiqing!

Your mixing salt with the paint reminds me of my painted Valentines cookies that I sprinkled with regular sprinkles for cookies/cakes. Except that mine disolved! LOL

P.S. Next time, I think I might try sand or sawdust--I think that might work.

Sweets~ that is a funny place to have Santa reside. ha I kinda like him distressed looking. He does have a darling face. I'm gonna have to get some of these to try. Gosh, can my to do list get ANY longer??? You learn something new every day. Never thought to put salt, sand or sawdust in with the paint to give it dimension. Good ideas. ~Anj

Hello all - I'm brand new at this and just discovered all the painted paver pictures on the internet. Wow - these are all awesome! So cute! But, can you please tell me what paints to use and what sort of stuff do I use to make ears, wings, antenna, etc - are they pieces of felt that is cut out and glued on? I want to make some of these myself soon. I sort of have an advantage for the pavers themselves - I work in a landscape supply center and we sell all sorts of pavers in many shapes and sizes! I can't wait to hear from someone and get to making some of these.

Hi Altacountrygirl, Welcome to the painting forum. Hey, you could even take some of your painted pavers to work--I'm sure your coworkers and customers would enjoy them.

They are so easy to paint--but use your old brushes, they are sort of hard on brushes. I just use my acrylic paints and then spray two or three coats of sealer on them. You could also use the Patio Paints and skip the sealer, or even use left over house paints.

There are two books out with cute patterns. You might check www.artistsclub.com or your Michael's store. I have one of them--will have to hunt for it and give you the name and author.

You can use anything on them. The fun foam would be best if you intend to put them outside. Regular felt would not hold up outside. You can add wire or chenille stems for antenae on the ladybugs. You can glue eyeglasses on some things. You can add some bling by gluing some pretty half marbles or old jewelry on. Just use your imagination, and the sky is the limit!

Gram, I just got my computer working again so couldn't respond until now. Thanks so much for that site, I had not seen those. I still havent' painted my two pavers. Maybe will get to it after the New Year. So many projects I'd love to do, how about you? LOL

I'm in favor of that Anj. Maybe we should just continue on with our Christmas/Winter creations at least through January. Maybe that way, we will have some of them ready to enjoy next Christmas!

I don't usually do too much for Valentine's--I think I have one or two patterns I would like to paint, but those could be done in February--surely two weeks would be long enough if I get myself in gear! LOL

How about the rest of you? Got any projects you haven't had time to finish before Christmas this year?

I just love all the paver suggestions. They are so helpful. I am curious as to what type of adhesive everyone uses to attach the wood, felt, embelishments, etc. I was told I needed to use a special kind but I can't remember the name. Please help. Thanks!
