Painting on Plastic Containers

I have been working on a new craft project for my Grandchildren. I am painting on plastic storage containers to be used for my grandkids toys. I am having so much fun downloading the graphics off of the computer and coping them onto the container. I am using DecColor Paint Pens to color the graphics. Has anyone ever done this kind of painting.

I am not sure if they need to be treated with a sealer to protect the paint from coming off.

Would appreciate any help or advise.

Hi Anne, Welcome to the Painting forum. That sounds really cute, can't wait to see pics of your project. ;o)

I've never used the paint pens, but I did paint on some plastic containers just using my regular acrylic paints.

I'm a big fan of the spray sealers. I'd suggest you spray on a couple coats to protect your designs--can't hurt and might help protect them longer.

Sounds like a cute project. Paint pens don't always need a sealer depending on the brand but if the items are to be handled regularly I would definitely seal them with a clear acrylic spray sealer for more protection.

For painting on plastic I've always used Plaid's 'Paint for Plastic'. It doesn't need a sealer and gently hand washes nicely.

Sorry I havn't replied till now but thank you for your suggestions. Since these are new pots and the slick finish will most likely not take direct painting very well, I'm going to use the spray paint for plastic. I have my heart set on a ceramic look so I've been experimenting with whats available. I looked in some faux painting books and I'm surprised I couln't find a ceramic glaze technique. I've played around with colors, just practice spraying onto cardboard, but what resulted looked so much like a pottery glaze I can't wait to try it on the pots! First I used a base of navy and followed very quikly with a light spray of the Hyicinth color by Krylon's Fusion, done so when the little specks hit the still wet base they sort of 'melt' in. That creates a mottled cobalt blue. Then as quickly as possible spray about an inch and a half of metallic light green around the top edge, enough to have it drip and then follow with a thinner band of metalic gold on top of that. My sample has the metalics dripping just enough that the reactions with the base look like real glaze-even the color variations! I'm waiting until next weekend after I go to a Home Depot clinic on paint techniques. The woman who teaches the classes was working when I asked about splatering on mineral spirits for a mottled efect. She's going to focus the class on my pots so I can get some expert advise if things don't work out like my cardboard samle. My main concerns are paint compatability in he long term-don't know if the metalics are compatable with the base paint and whether the thicker application will hold up. I've never done pictures on the net so if they turn out I'll try to put them up here.

Ideas to insulate the outside of plastic containers

My neighborhood IKEA is remodelling their store and tossing out sheet upon sheet of plywood and insulation in a dumpster next to their store. Was tempted to scrounge some up to shade my containers, but reconsidered as it's banged up around the edges and will look ugly. Still trying to figure out a cheap way to completely block out the sun on a couple dozen containers that won't look ugly... I like the chicken wire idea, was thinking could plant some native drought tolerant plants in the peat pockets and get some living mulch action going... thanks!

Can I use regular transparent plastic container for composting?

The color or opaqueness have nothing to do with the compost heating up, that is a function of of bacterial activity. Compost that gets no sun at all will still heat up, providing the mix is close to the 30:1 that is optimal, the moisture is right, and the volume, the mass, is close to enough. I'm not all that sure the mass of that tub would be sufficient to get the bacteria that will generate the heat that busy. I'm also not sure that you could get enough holes drilled in that tub to provide the amount of air those bacteria need.

Corrugated plastic roofing idea for a container

Bricks are a good idea, thanks. The corrugated plastic roofing material is clear and can be used for making cold frames (my dad has some). It holds its shape as it's a solid sheet. I thought about clear plastic (like a shower curtain) but I didn't like the idea of run-off from thawing snow pooling in one or two areas. At least with the plastic sheeting I can drill holes and there's less of a chance of snow melting in one place. And I would use Solo cups underneath with holes drilled into the bottom so there would be drainage onto the patio. Here is a link that might be useful: Example of plastic roofing

Thanks so much ladies for all the good information. This weekend I went to Michaels Craft Store and finally found someone that worked with these paint pens. She recommended using the brand "Painters", but said that the "DecoColor" pens work as well. She did not think I need to use a sealer unless I use acrylic paint. I already made a big investment in the DecoColor Pens, but going forward I will be buying "Painter Pens, and I will look into the Plaid's"Paint for Plastic".
I plan to take some picture and post them.

i am presently trying to paint a clear plastic bin for a 3 year old i am trying everything aside from oil based paint pens (i dont have any of those) the paint for plastic i used pealed right off in one layer now trying acrylic paint pens and acrylic paint To seal it after painted i heard to use mod podge or a spray varnish does anyone know if i have to coat the entire box or just where painted? help please! thanks 🙃

I use Sharpie paint pens or Decocolor paint pens. I buy them in Michael's. No need to use sealer. They come in fine line, medium and bold. I use the medium and outline with the fine line in black. They come in tons of colors but not Cheap! If you read the above posts from years ago..there more info. Be sure

Hi everyone! FYI-The sharpie paint pens are oil based. no need to seal oil based pens/paint. I’ve used the ”painters” pens and I find they are unreliable as the nib frays and paint dries up quickly. Also, the paint thats specifically for plastic peeled off in one sheet and came off as I was working on the rest of the box. My question was if I do seal the project (most likely) do I use the sealer on the entire box or just the parts I painted? I think It would be hard to just seal the painted parts as I painted the girls name and painted some princesses on it as well. plus I feel that the parts I sealed will be much shinier than the rest of the box. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks so much! Happy painting!
