I got my inspiration from the finished kitchens blog--in particular, judy pinkerton's. Yours looks like it could lean that way as well. She used SW Croissant I believe. If you haven't seen this entire blog, it is worth an afternoon.

Have you checked "Carrington Beige" (HC-93) from Benjamin Moore? Very neutral beige used by decorators and designers.

Well, you could go with a green of course, or a blue, dark brown, beige. You need an inspiration piece. What is in the family room in terms of upholstery, fabrics, accessories? I would look there for something I really like and then pick a color from that. The kitchen is so neutral, that you can go many different directions.

I was also thinking to go darker...even a deep rust would be pretty. Just wanted to warn you about a marble back-splash. They tend to look peachy and may not look good with your cabinets and NVG granite. We have NVG and couldn't find any tumbled marble to match it. Putting a sealer on the marble brings out the pink even more.

I don't know if this helps, but at least it's a start.

Have you considered a wine colored look that is in the NVG granite? I think it would look gorgeous with the floors. I have carrington beige and it will not go with NVG.

Family room is an addition , so we are going to eventually be replacing most of the furnishings from our old space. There are high ceilings, the same early American stained wood floors and a fieldstone fireplace at the far end. Because this is part of one large open floor plan, I have been leaning toward a neutral color on the walls and then I would bring in some color with accessories etc. But I am now realizing that another reason I am finding it challenging to find one color that will work throughout the whole space is that I also don't want to go too dark in the family room. However, maybe I could go darker in the kitchen and a shade or two lighter in the family room area? Cabinets are kind of a cross between Sherwin Williams Antique White and Vanillin, if that helps. I thought I'd try out SW Believable Buff in the kitchen, Whole Wheat, which is one shade down for the family room or the reverse (or even darker for the kitchen) - anyone familiar with those?

newhomebuilder - Thanks for the warning! Would limestone be any less peachy? What did you end up doing for your backsplash?

I don't consider myself a green paint person, but I'm painting my kitchen with off-white cabinets BM Sag Harbor Gray. It's a greenish brownish colour that's quite neutral. There have been a couple other kitchens done in this color on GW and it looks great. I'm hoping it will look as good as the pitcures on here!

We used BM -OC 83 Creme Caramel. It's a nice neutral color against our cream colored cabinets. I think choosing paint colors is one of the hardest decisions to make. Good Luck.

Thanks so much for the suggestions and photo. Well, I tried SW Whole Wheat - it is just amazing what the east-southeast light in my kitchen is doing to all these paint colors! On the strip, Whole Wheat looks almost taupe, but on my walls it is much warmer than that - it looks like I thought the Blonde would.

The good news is that I like it a lot and it seems to coordinate well with the cabinets and granite. Tomorrow I'll get Believable Buff or maybe even Navajo White and decide if I want to match or contrast in the kitchen (Buff is still darker than my cabinets by a shade or so). I think I may be on the right track with this strip, though. I will definitely take a look at the Caramel, too!

Just wanted to tell you all that I went with the Whole Wheat and am very happy with it. Two coats are up and is a very warm and soft look in my space, not at all taupe-y. I still haven't seen the whole effect - floors are still covered with paper. When they are done, I'll try for a photo. Thanks again for the help!
