I have hickory cabinets and a darkish gray-green soapstone. The foyer has cararra marble thich went w/ NOTHING in my house, so my thinking was to use cararra in the backsplash to tie it in, but I wanted a little something to POP .I am using Carerra 3x6" honed subway tile for my backsplash. Mid-height In the backsplash I am running about a 6" band of a glass varied length blend (the POP) ...all of my outlets will be in the glass tile area. The material I am using for the 'stripe' is made by Mirage and called a cane blend:

I have ordered extra of the blend to use as an edge in some of the areas that need a little more finish. I had considered a cararra pencil tile, but decided to use some of the very thin strips from the glass to acts as an edge.

I have mini subways (1 x 2"). They're actually white venatino marble, but they'll still give you the feeling of the minis.

Sounds like you want something special, but if you just want to keep it simple, you can have the edge tile cut at an angle since the tile is stone and consistent throughout.

LOL, Sabjimata! We did our kitchen in 2004. The only subway tile available was hand made. It was very cheap, like $4.65 a square foot but every tile was different. We set the tile ourselves so can't blame anyone else for the job. I'm just pleased that people are still using it. We wanted a simple kitchen to go with our old house. It's hard to believe it has been 6 years since we re-did the kitchen.

I love the mini subways! There was nothing like that available when we did our kitchen.

Here's a shot of my cousins kitchen which has mini-brick marble (I don't think it's carerra, maybe it is, but close anyway) but I wanted to show one without a border. Also they have bright white cabinets and soapstone, though theirs is closer to black I think. They hadn't had a chance to paint the caulk yet, but once they do the line should be pretty clean looking even without a border.

We didn't use any end treatment, but we do have a border on top. Our contractor ordered the wrong tile (crown molding instead of pencil tile) for the detail behind the range). Instead of waiting another week for a replacement, I asked him to cut the molding lengthwise. Part of it was used in place of the pencil tile and the rest was used on the top border. It turned out ok.
