Where did all our newbies go???

If you are out there lurking..... STOP IT!! Don't be shy! Get on in here and chatter with us and share something you've done either currently or we enjoy looking at the old stuff too. Remember it's new to us. It doesn't matter what median you are using, we love to see it all. If you aren't currently painting anything, get those brushes out! ha We have a couple of holidays coming up! I'm leaving for a week and when I get back I want to see lots of new things here! That goes for you old timers (to the forum) too! :)

LOL I'm still lurking. I haven't had time to figure out how to post pictures on this site yet. I think you have to have photobucket or something like it, and I just havent' had time to set it up yet. Its been really busy at work. I asked about painting a metal gas can before Christmas, and you guys gave me some great ideas. When I can, I will get the pics of it up on the board. Thanks

Hi Pegtn, Sorry your work has been so busy, but glad you are at least able to come by and see what's going on. Even if you can't post pics yet, feel free to add your comments on any post. Hope you've had time to look at most of the old posts and check out all the projects posted in the gallery section too. They are always fun to see and sometimes good for inspiration.

Photobucket is easy to join and free. Just go to www.photobucket.com and fill in your info. It only takes a few minutes.

There are some helpful directions on here about the middle of the page for how to post photos. Anj, wrote them last year and allot of us have used them. If you have any questions, just ask and we will try to help. Will look forward to seeing your projects too.

The 2nd day my pond was in existence I had 6 small bullfrogs show up. Now there are 4 of the original six. All are huge since it is 4 years later. Sometimes they would leave for months and then come back, but have never not been around in the fall before winter. Bullfrogs are partial to their homes and I think leave sometimes for food, and mating, and territory if too many, but otherwise are homebodies. Sad as it is, maybe something ate yours - is that possible you think? I have more snakes, a heron, and saw a raccoon once, and two of my neighbors cats hang out by my ponds now, so many of the smaller toads and frogs have disappeared, but so far this summer have kept my remaining original 4. My only named frog, called 'Droopy' was here in the spring but he has been missing in action for months now. I fear he is permanently gone:-( I had a big one-eyed frog run over by a car in front of my house once. He had strayed from the front yard pond to get insects I suppose and didn't see the car coming. There are lots of dangers out there for frogs like each other, cats, birds, little boys and girls with boxes, snakes, raccoons, and just old age. The widespread drought has not been good for amphibians either.

I agree with the above. Plus the fact that too much personal information gets divulged or can be mined by joining facebook. I'd rather limit my online participation to forums like GW and other, less inclusive, less wide open sites. I've been a member here for a long time....going on a couple of decades......and I have seen the same ebb and flow of visitor traffic through the seasons as we are now witnessing. January, February, March are always as slow as molasses but it will pick up when the gardening season comes into to full force in the next 6-8 weeks. And I have to say that the comments about excessive ads and pop-ups surprises me. I don't experience hardly any at all and just use Explorer with the standard firewalls. Didn't realize this was much of a problem anymore regardless of the Internet server one used...... I have to be honest when I say I read more than post. Most of the topics don't hold a great deal of interest for me and I tend only to respond to questions that get neglected or overlooked or when erroneous info is provided. Since conifers are not my area of concentrated expertise, I let others respond first - there is an amazing knowledge base here :-) But I still remain pretty active in some other forums. I also live in an area where the Internet is not widely available so I am not online at home. And since my work life is pretty seasonal and therefore computer access the same, I tend not to post much in winter anyway.

Wow, lots to answer here! First of all, thanks for the kind comments. I'm so glad you guys enjoyed seeing the pics. Saintpfla, I didn't plant a single one of them. Period. Haha! I got one from a friend several years ago that he dug up from his backyard. They are, indeed, native brown-eyed Susans. ALL of mine came from that one plant, plus I have given away tons of them. Yet, they aren't invasive, by any means. They reseed happily every year, but the young plants are easy to pull or transplant or pot up for others. They are biennials and take two years to bloom, but once you have a patch of them going, you will get blooms every year. They have no discernible fragrance, to me, but the bees sure love them. They are draught tolerant, hardy, and form low-growing basal rosettes until they start shooting up tall bloom stems. They make terrific cut flowers and when these are done blooming, I will probably pull them all out. At least all the ones that bloomed. They kind of die back after they finish, so I pull them, but leave the new rosettes that are coming up so that they can bloom next year. I've enjoyed them so much, I've often considered taking everything else out of the bed and letting them really go crazy. But I like seeing the red pentas and a few other blooms in there with them, too. Tropicfreak, the only roses I grow any more are OGR's, and they go in the ground, usually. Though I do have a few in pots. When I used to grow hybrid teas, I had no luck with Jackson Perkins roses at all. Largely because they weren't on the right root stock. I always bought Nelson roses in this area, as they are on Fortuniana, and I grew them in the ground and in pots, both. With pretty good success. I don't grow them any more because I got tired of the endless cycle of feeding and spraying. If I were you, I would only invest in roses grown locally in your area on the correct root stock. The others will likely croak. Hope that's some help to you. Thanks again, everyone, for your nice comments. The bed is a mess overall, but with so many yellow flowers everywhere, who cares? This is a control issue, and you need to win. You can win soft, like Stephanie suggests, or you can win hard, which is what I've done (I actually remember lying across by 2.5-yr-old on the bed to hold her in place--not that I recommend it, but all the other nice methods had only developed into delaying tactics). And winning here will make it easier to win at other times and places, which will be important. It's true, you can't force a child to sleep. But you can insist that bedtime comes at a time the GROWNUP decides. And you can insist on quiet time in case the body needs a nap. When we Ferber-ized my oldest, she was 16 months old, and the battle was over bedtime. I realized pretty quickly (like the 3rd time of going in to pat her on the back) that this was a control issue. I've come, now that I have 2 kids, to realize that it's important for mommy to get her way, even when it's simply a matter of preferences and not safety, etc. We've got a lot to do in a day, and fighting over stuff simply wastes time, energy, good will, happy feelings. But the way the fight is SUPPOSED to end is with the GROWNUP winning. I had a friend (who chastized me for using the Ferber method on a 16-mo-old possibly damaging her self-esteem--yeah, right, 2 nights of mommy insisting on bedtime was gonna make her stop thinking she's the most important person on the planet) whose 3-year-old daughter wouldn't sleep in her own bed, wouldn't go to sleep at bedtime (my friend was so exhausted from staying up w/ her that she was afraid she'd be fired at her part-time job), etc. I held my tongue and didn't ask her who was in charge of her household, or ask why she'd abdicated her responsibilities as a parent. It's in the basic job description for kids, that they're supposed to make it tough on parents. And yours just recently got a promotion to top trouble-causer, so at least you know that developmentally she's right on track. Now your job is to match her--to find ways at THIS age to insist on the basic rules of your household, of which bedtime and afternoon down time are prime.

hi everyone.....i'm a newbie to this board and i have already learned to upload pics thank to u all.....so I have them on Photobucket but I can't figure out how to get the pics on the message board....i can get the links by copy and paste but not the pictures,,,,,,,HELP....thanks in advance..............

Hi Brendastarr, I may be doing mine a bit differently, but here is what works easiest for me.

Go to Photobucket, click on any pics on the same page that you would like to post on a message here. Now go all the way to the bottom of that Photobucket page and click on the box that says"generate Img & Html code". This will take you to the next page where you will right click on the first selection and select "copy". Now exit out of Photobucket and come here and type your message. Right click in your message and select "paste". When you hit the preview message button, then all your selected pictures will appear in your message. Really makes it quick and easy to post multiple pictures.

Give it a try and let me know if you have any other questions, okay?

O MY GOODNESS.....IT WORKED......thank u sooooo much LUVS....I would have never figured out those steps......I probably could have made the pictures a bit larger......THANKS AGAIN....YOUR A "LUV'....pardon the pun LOL

Yipee! So glad it worked for you Brenda. Now we get to see your projects. ;o)

I don't have to do any sizing on my pictures from IPhoto, they come over just fine, and you can click on them in the message and they will enlarge. Your second one here worked perfectly, first one is too small to see details well.

These little guys look so cute. Very nicely painted, and I love the little "extras" you added to their hats.
