One Stroke Painting Projects

Hi,

I've looked at the projects of other members in this forum. You guys are so talented!

I've never done this before, posting pictures anywhere on the internet. Hope I did it right. I really like Donna Dewberry. Here are some of my projects using her techniques. Started painting about 4 years ago. Never seem to have enough time to paint as much as I would like.

Chris, Welcome to the forum. Your projects look great. Wish I could enlarge them but Photobucket is not working right. You might be able to try again later and it will. I'm so glad you came to play with us.

This is a great forum and I just love to come here and see everyones projects. Hope you continue to come back, post and chat with us. Punk

Hi Chris, So glad you found us and have shared some of your painting. Each one looks really good but like Phonegirl said, Photobucket is not letting us enlarge them just now for an even better look. I thought they had the problem fixed, but guess it still isn't always working right.

I do a little bit of One Stroke painting too and love it. Just so fast and easier than doing the regular three steps of basecoating, shading and highlighting. I really need to practice more, I was doing it allot for awhile but haven't done much in the last year. Like everything, it's easier and better if you practice, practice, practice. LOL

So what kinds of projects will you be using your painting on? Do you paint things mostly for yourself and gift items, or do you sell some of your projects? Come back and tell us more about yourself please.

I've done several welcome signs, garden signs, metal trays, glass jars and a few candles. Don't sell, just for me and for gift items.

janesylvia, I agonized over this issue also - I feel your pain! lol. I'm a homeowner, kitchen cabinets were oak with a kind of pinkish finish popular in the 90's I've been told? They were looking bad. I replaced the uppers with new cabinets (to extend to ceiling) but lowers, I painted and they look great! Then I took the old uppers and put in the laundry room...painted same white as in kitchen and they also look great. I did try the rollers, various types, but all left exactly what you mentioned, a line. Some very slight bubbling too. Spraying was above my skill set. Instead I used a good brush (Purdy's, my fav!) Gosh, with oak, the grain is gorgeous coming through and *in my opinion* the brush application is a nice compliment to the entire look. I don't notice any brush strokes although I'm sure they're there, just not readily visible with the oak graining. I painted the cabinets white. I heard all kinds of nays on doing that, painting them myself,the color, yada yada yada, but I love the finished look. It is not a smooth finish, like glass or something, it has some character. It might not be a look for everyone but for me and everyone that sees it, it's a winner. I washed the cabinets real good, let dry real good, lightly sanded, did a tack cloth several times over to get any lint, sawdust off and then took the plunge. I used a newer product (newer at the time, which was within this past year) which was an all-in-one paint available at HD. "Behr Premium Plus Stain Blocking Paint and Primer in One." Had it tinted to the white color I selected. I went with semi-gloss finish but I think that's a personal choice, to each their own on the sheen level. I don't find these cabinets to be overly shiny. Honestly, just figured might as well try painting them myself. Luckily it worked well for me..I did of course try one small door panel first to be certain this was a go. Also one last piece of advice: allow them to dry FOREVER before using and definitely wait on adding hardware, like handles or pulls until the paint is dried/cured/whatever the professional term is for that! This was my experience and it turned out well. I hope the same for your project if you decide to tackle it. Best wishes!

Shar, There is a OS Manuel that is on the internet at: http://www.onestroke.com/manual There is a lot of tips for more than roses. Without being able to see your roses it is hard to say what you are doing that is making you unhappy with them. But the second skirt starts at the same edge that your second stroke for the bud begins. Hope you understand that. Then when you do the comma strokes line your brush up with the edge of the rose bud, and Lean outward away from the bud, push, and come back to the chisel edge. Welcome to the forum, Anitapaints. I used DD's books and videos and sort of taught myself. Did lots of metal trays and some garden signs with roses and other flowers on them. I really like how quickly I can do a project using a double loaded brush! I love using the DD brushes too, and Folkart paint is my favorite. I learned the rose and leaves pretty well, loved doing the little butterflies and hummingbirds. I still want to learn to do the sunflower, iris, and some of her other flowers. Problem is that I already have lots of her books and videos--so probably won't be buying more since I've not mastered what I already have! Michael's carries her products, but seldom gets new stuff in. And she has branched off into sewing and other lines as well. Does she still do the shopping network shows? I always love to watch her paint and like her "down to earth" manner--was always upset that her television show wasn't on in my area! I love going to craft shows, but can't really say what the "hot items" are now. I do see some large wood cutouts and some small blocks with words and a little cutout on top. Very little one stroke style items, and never any landscapes. I have seen some painted glasses and bottles and some of the glass blocks. I'm not much help to you am I? Hi Chris...saw the enlarged ones, but thought I'd better come here to make my reply. I love one stroke. I've only done one thing so far with it. I really need practice, but never seem to have time for it. Donna makes it look soooo easy. I really want to get better at the roses, leaves and things to add them to my other painted projects. All of your projects are really good. Are you taking a class or just doing it on your own?

Hi Chris,

Thank you for posting your pictures - sure wish they worked properly!

I have only tried Donna's pansy's and I love the rainbow effect of the colors. You pictures show that you have used a lot of different surfaces, something I need to start doing. I seem to be stuck on wood. One of your pictures looks like you used canvas or paper - what did you use to prep the surface?

Your paintings look good. I am also a one stroke painter and have done many projects on many different surfaces. The most popular lately has been painting on wine glasses. Good for you that you took the plunge to sell your crafts. You have a big variety of items too. Love your little jean purses. One Stroke is fun, but takes lots of practice to do it well. I worked and worked to finally be able to paint the rose and some leaves. Tried a sunflower, but it was harder than it looked and I didn't like how mine turned out, so I washed it off and haven't tried another one yet! LOL

Did you take classes? Did you go for the One Stroke certification? Come back and chat more with us, we love to hear all about painting.

Me and my mom took a class together and went home afterwards and practiced for a few days. After that we went crazy just painting EVERYTHING! We love it and try to make some xtra cash by doing craft shows. Not very good sales this year, I dont think anyone wants to by anything that they dont need.
But I am not certified, I dont know what I would do with it if I was..
