Boy It's Sure Quiet

It's quiet here on the stepfamily board! I guess that's a good sign -- it means that things are going pretty smoothly and nobody has any venting to do, right?

Hope everyone gets lots of chocolate and roses for Valentine's Day!

Now that so many boards are pay-boards (effective February), I think we've lost lots of people. All of the boards are slow and boring :-)

If I'da known that, I might've saved myself $15!

I noticed you're in NH -- I lived in Milford (west of Nashua) many years ago ... loved it! Does Rt. 3 still have the HUGE "welcome to MA" bump when you cross into MA? hee hee!

I just found this site this winter and I've really enjoyed reading the posts in several different forums. My winter months are spent dreaming about what I can do in the garden next year and I've been finding lots of great ideas. I have always really enjoyed the birds and have become convinced that I need to plant many more natives. I just chopped down a small Norway Maple in our backyard yesterday--am thinking about a serviceberry in its place. I don't think I will ever be militant about planting natives only, but this site has certainly opened my eyes to many issues I was unaware of. I threw my bag of lawn "weed n' feed" in the garbage yesterday too. :) Kind of hurt, since the stuff isn't cheap, but I want to make better choices than I have in the past. Think I'll just get rid of the lawn entirely, instead ;D Keep posting everybody--I've really really enjoyed and benefited from reading many of these posts!

Drjoann, from reading your OP and from seeing what you've been writing in other threads, here are my ideas for you. "Is a cutlery tray a big deal? " Top rack, for cutlery: a great thing. Now that the patent has expired, any DW manufacturer can put it in their models. Suddenly now, they no longer "dis" it. People who have it say it is good. Before you run your next DW wash cycle, you can actually leave the cutlery in the rack for a long time and not worry about emptying it like a basket requires. Two years ago when I studied this topic, I found the 18" Miele could come with two of these racks so one can just slide the full clean rack into a shallow drawer and not even have to unload it. No other DW had this at that time. I got a cheaper DW in the end but I'm still envious. "What are we missing if we get a modern, quiet DW, but don't go for the TOL ..." Hmmm, hard to be objective about this. If you are willing to be a proud driver of a VW (like, say, a Rabbit) instead of feeling you need or deserve any other more expensive Deutsches Auto, you have already answered this question. Wherever you are, there is bound to be one store or small chain that gives great deals to people who call, email, or show up and say they are dealhunters in every way. I found a great deal this way. I said "any DW, reasonably modern and quiet" . I was also buying other appliances. When I returned 9 months later I got a deal on another purchase. It all worked well, and my DW criteria might have been just the right starting point. The cost accountant in each company has to allocate costs based on a number of factors that have no correlation to the user experience in terms of dB(A) or drying or cleaning. A model that has not been re-worked will not have associated R&D costs to recuperate, so its distributor cost will be low. How will you know? Never can. Just declare yourself as the low-cost buyer you will be. Any DW, that is mid-range and quiet. If you want heated drying, it will have a steam vent in front. If you want condensating drying, it will not vent steam in front, it will be "greener" and take more time to finish a wash. I think DW technology is mature now so there is no compelling reason to spring for the highest price DW's. hth

Hi Clara (and Pamela and Leahcate)! I just saw your post. My sister was just here and she quilts (I don't). Quilting is so intricate and detailed that I wouldn't even be able to get started, least of all enjoy it! My hat is off to you for realizing it's supposed to be fun. Clara, I haven't really found any forums for support, but decided to do what I knew how to do when I was first diagnosed. (There were a few on the cooking forum who helped me out initially.) I jumped immediately into an old Weight Watcher's diet until I got Diabetes nutrition education, along with my blood testing kit. I felt like I was flying blind until I started testing my Blood Glucose (BG), but after that was easily able to see the correlation between what I was eating and how it affected me. What's important are Little Meals, with some protein always included, with definite snacks in-between keep your BG more stable. I've been eating apples with a little peanut butter, or celery with PB or cheese. You'll have to limit your carbs and spread them out throughout the day...it's amazing how many carbs are in a large apple! I started actively reading labels and seeing how much a portion was (much less than I had been enjoying.) Google Diabetic Gourmet Magazine; there is good information there, and I periodically check to remind myself of how important it is keep tight control of Diabetes. My doctor suggested ''Diabetes for Dummies'' which was very helpful to me. I still pull it out to read when I have a question about something. There's some good info on the Mojo thread about the Glycemic Index (good carbs that are slower to raise BG), which helped me a lot. The thing you have to do is eat! Then wait two hours before you eat again. If you'd like a support buddy, please e-mail me (My Page) and we'll chat. I know how overwhelming it is at first, but once you push through this and get regulated with meds/diet, you'll have so much energy you'll feel like your old (in my case very old!) self. I had my mom & MIL for most of May & did some traveling with mom. They left & we went camping at Rocky Mtn National Park for 6 days ... now trying to get ready for our neighborhood garage sale on Friday night & Saturday. I swore I would never do this again (and it has been about 5 years) but I just have too much stuff so cleaned the garage and now hauling stuff out to sell. I did do a little fabric shopping with camping friends in Estes Park, CO. I pulled out a UFO (queen size) that I started handquilting 10+ years ago & sandwiched the Disappearing 16patch. Son's GF LOVED her birthday quilt I left here for her while we were camping. (he said she jumped off the sofa & was beaming!) That's the kind of reviews you like to get! She did leave a lovely thank you card. I need to get started on a baby quilt for July & decide on a pattern for a bunch of Oriental fabrics I have been collecting. I'm thinking of a fan type pattern ... just not sure yet. Still lots of UFOs to get going on also. The weather is FINALLY starting to get nice (even though it rained/snowed/sleeted on us while camping!) so the flowerbeds are calling me to pull weeds - that will wait until next week. Back to work now on the garage! Sue

Hi again - I guess I need to update my profile - I'm in Mass. now, but just over the border. I know Milford quite well, as I have friends who used to live there (pre-divorce!).

And yes, that sign is STILL there, as is the bump!

That is too funny -- it's been at least 7 years since I've been there! I just love that area. Last time I was up that way I was dismayed to see that 101 from Nashua to Milford has gone from being open and green to commercial row. Too bad. Now I truly understand that bumper sticker that says "Welcome to New Hampshire - now go home!" ...

And yeah, I lived in Milford pre-divorce, too ... I always refer to it is "my previous life" ...

I'd love to visit there in the fall ... I still have friends in NH and MA.

I get nostalgic for New England ... but definitely NOT my ex! hee hee!

101 Nashua to Milford is HORRIBLE! I remember years back (now I'm showing my age!, but it hasn't been THAT many years back) that it was a pretty nice ride, and not a lot of commercial stuff. Now I don't think there's a spare postage-stamp-size piece of land left.

I avoid it because of the traffic.

Oh well ... that's "progress"...

Glad to see I didn't miss anything. DH and I were in Hawaii. This is our down time for the business and we had a great opportunity to use the ocean front condo of a friend. Now I come home and I have to cook dinner .. do dishes. Yecch! Hard to come back from being a princess.

"Lady lawyer" (changed my screen name) is still in on the fun (even paid my $15) but things have been busy, busy, busy! The baby is now mobile (watch out!) and keeps me and his daddy running and laughing, he is quite the little "entertainer", he has little "tricks" he does just to make us laugh (he's either going to be an actor, like my little brother or a lawyer, like me). Work has been hectic too, some of the matters I have been handling recently have been extraordinarily complex (but that makes it all the more interesting). Then there's the seemingly never ending stream of baby showers, weddings, birthday parties, and unfortunately, two funerals in the last two weeks alone . . . thank goodness I have a vacation coming up!
