Boy It's Sure Quiet

It's quiet here on the stepfamily board! I guess that's a good sign -- it means that things are going pretty smoothly and nobody has any venting to do, right?

Hope everyone gets lots of chocolate and roses for Valentine's Day!

Now that so many boards are pay-boards (effective February), I think we've lost lots of people. All of the boards are slow and boring :-)

If I'da known that, I might've saved myself $15!

Hi Suzieque ... I think you might be right. yawn-yawn.

I noticed you're in NH -- I lived in Milford (west of Nashua) many years ago ... loved it! Does Rt. 3 still have the HUGE "welcome to MA" bump when you cross into MA? hee hee!

We send at least two teams per year, but we haven't been able to get in the country for a year now, due to the unstable conditions before and immediately after the elections. I haven't checked lately to see how the new President is doing. The small orphanage we support is administered by Dr. Hubert Morquette, who is a wonderful Haitian physician who returned to his country after being education elsewhere. You bring up a very important point....as the kids reach a certain age they need to learn some skills or advanced education to find some work, and even with those skills there's not much to do in the Haitian economy. Several of the older kids have been adopted and brought to the U.S. by families who were fearful of their future in Haiti. As is the case in many parts of the world, the only ones left after the govt's leave are the faith based organizations, which is true in Haiti. The U.S. government has once again withdrawn Peace Corps Volunteers, and it looks as though they have abandoned the mission there. There are no plans to reinstate Peace Corps in that country.

It is sad and most of them just don't know what the impact is.My dad called because the neighbor across the street had Cabbage Palms trimmed and a nest of baby squirrels lay on the ground.He begged me to come to get them.I went over and he had them still in the nest on his table.Their eyes were not even open!The Palms had been scalped.I could see the mother squirrel frantically looking for her babies so I took the nest over to the scalped tree.The neighbor came out and yelled I HATE squirrels and pointed his finger at them and said BANG BANG.I decided to take them to a different neighbor and set the nest of babies in the crotch of an oak.Then Dad and I sat back and watched.Finally after all her searching she found the nest and took them to safety. I keep a flier on NO HARSH PRUNING from the ext office.I make copies and hand them to tree trimmers. It explains why overpruning damages Sabal Palms in the long run. How taking off green fronds zaps their energy source and also hits on how useful Sabals are to wildlife. I had to have 4 large oaks removed due to Hypoxylon Oak canker. When I went to pay the guy I handed one to him and said Promise to read this? He looked at the picture of the Sabal Palm and said now which tree is this? Scary!? Glad he only worked on my DEAD trees!

AllStar coach giving his team a pep talk, said they did an outstanding job, even though they lost their second game, today, as on the field it was 106. Glad I was in the shade with a breeze. The holiday season is a strange time at pet shelters, I have learned. I went to one after the holidays once, and I couldn't believe the number of adult, pure bred, well cared for dogs especially were in their kennels. I asked the vet there what was going on, and she said that every Christmas their shelter fills up with family pet cast offs. People decide they want a new puppy for Christmas, and so they dump the family pet at the shelter so they can have a puppy for the kids under the tree. Just blew me away. Anyhow, my advice is to contact your local shelter soon and visit to see if you find someone there who needs to come home with you.

Hi again - I guess I need to update my profile - I'm in Mass. now, but just over the border. I know Milford quite well, as I have friends who used to live there (pre-divorce!).

And yes, that sign is STILL there, as is the bump!

That is too funny -- it's been at least 7 years since I've been there! I just love that area. Last time I was up that way I was dismayed to see that 101 from Nashua to Milford has gone from being open and green to commercial row. Too bad. Now I truly understand that bumper sticker that says "Welcome to New Hampshire - now go home!" ...

And yeah, I lived in Milford pre-divorce, too ... I always refer to it is "my previous life" ...

I'd love to visit there in the fall ... I still have friends in NH and MA.

I get nostalgic for New England ... but definitely NOT my ex! hee hee!

101 Nashua to Milford is HORRIBLE! I remember years back (now I'm showing my age!, but it hasn't been THAT many years back) that it was a pretty nice ride, and not a lot of commercial stuff. Now I don't think there's a spare postage-stamp-size piece of land left.

I avoid it because of the traffic.

Oh well ... that's "progress"...

Glad to see I didn't miss anything. DH and I were in Hawaii. This is our down time for the business and we had a great opportunity to use the ocean front condo of a friend. Now I come home and I have to cook dinner .. do dishes. Yecch! Hard to come back from being a princess.

"Lady lawyer" (changed my screen name) is still in on the fun (even paid my $15) but things have been busy, busy, busy! The baby is now mobile (watch out!) and keeps me and his daddy running and laughing, he is quite the little "entertainer", he has little "tricks" he does just to make us laugh (he's either going to be an actor, like my little brother or a lawyer, like me). Work has been hectic too, some of the matters I have been handling recently have been extraordinarily complex (but that makes it all the more interesting). Then there's the seemingly never ending stream of baby showers, weddings, birthday parties, and unfortunately, two funerals in the last two weeks alone . . . thank goodness I have a vacation coming up!
