I think this is a good thing, isn't it??

Our GC told me that our custom cabinets are going to be built on site instead of at a shop. Anything special to know about this?

I live in a 1927 house in which the original cabs are still here and they were site built. We (not we, my DH is doing it!) are now rebuilding the inners but will keep and restore the gumwood faces and rearrange them. Sort of the opposite of kitchen remodels that keep the inners and reface the fronts. Some thoughts -- when the person who is making the cabs has continual access to the kitchen where they will be installed rather than working from a CAD drawing, all kinds of customization is enabled and sometimes dreamed up on the spot because the process of building the cabs identifies opportunities and challenges. You can look for little ways to make them fit with the rest of the house since the cabinet maker has continual access. You can sometimes make little changes as you go without incurring change costs. You can choose not to have a back which might be an advantage if, for example, your upper cabs are shallow and cannot be made deeper and you want every available bit of depth for dishes (this is true for our kitchen because the upper cabs on the north wall join to a window on the east wall and we're not changing the window. I would have been happy to have new cabs-- there are advantages with cabinet boxes too -- but we decided to restore the gumwood and so we are into the process of redesigning within the contraints of the available faces (new gumwood is almost impossible to find these days). A different kind of cabinet adventure for sure. Good luck with your kitchen!

I think mendocino_rose is right. I heard somewhere that rain water, with lightening, does have nitrogen, which the roses and other plants love. I think I heard it from FOX News so I'll let you decide if it's factual or not :)

It's not scale, mealies, or aphids. The last two could have caused this condition when those leaves were very young however. It just may be the cold and too much water. Cut those damaged leaves out. More will grow in, use a very sharp exacto knife found at any art supply store. Or a single edged razor blade in a holder. It must be sterile. Scale is like little pin heads that appear as bumps on the leaves. Aphids, are white, black, yellow, red? and can just be washed off, and mealies are white fuzzy tiny little egg shapped things that can walk lay eggs and hatch about every 5 days. The males will fly. Soap and water will kill them and well as 50% alcohol. You may want to use a cotton bud (que tip) to attack them or spray it on. cut off those damaged leaves. This is a product that I use in the Spring, Bayer Advance Garden 2-in-1 Systemic Rose and Flower Care. Be sure to follow the directions, more isn't better. The plant is more at risk if grown indoors. I also suggest you cut back water this time of the year. Crassula ovata oozes out extra moisture if it can't handle it. If you have high humidity then don't water as well. My humidity is about 5% this time of the year, and I do not water. I have it growing in a very coarse mix, that I put together myself, mine are crowded into their pots, and they flower in December though the next few months. I let the soil dry out. July-Sept I cut the plant back in Oct.1 and fertilize often during it's growing season. I only repot when it outgrows it pot, and out the bottom hole. The plant will actually tell me when it needs repotting. I hope this has been of some help, this information is only a guide, use your own judgement what your plant needs, just grow them with common sense. Our PeeWee woke up in the middle of the night gasping to take a breath. We rushed her to an Emergency vet hospital and they immediately put her on oxygen and had her in ICU for a day and a half. We learned she had congestive heart failure and major kidney problems but were told that with meds and special food we might have bought her anywhere from 6 months to a year. Her lifestyle would be quite different than before her episode but she would be pain free. Well, it was obvious to us that though she was in no pain she had no energy and barely ate or drank anything. She might have had time, but she had no quality of life. I was so afraid she'd have another episode and would die gasping for air. I couldn't make a decision and prayed she would die on her own. PeeWee slept in a playpen at the foot of our bed because of incontinence problems and in addition to clean towels I would place the nightgown I had worn the previous night so she'd have my scent close to her. I awoke around 2:30 AM to check her and her breathing was shallow but she was comfortable. She was sleeping in the far corner of the playpen. I checked her again at 5:15 and she was gone. It was especially heartbreaking when I realized she had made it to my nightgown and passed away curled up on it. My heart still aches when I think of the effort it took her to reach that spot, but I guess it was important to her to be close to me in some way. I'm so sorry you're going through this. If you love your furbaby, and I know you do, this is a monumental decision you'll be having to make. Hopefully, Abby will pass away painlessly in her sleep. Mona

Hi Thankyou for your input, heres the deal, this "licensed" electrician did an upgrade, we had a labeled panel previously, in my opinion he did an extremely half ass job, two of our previous breakers are not even hooked up inside the panel, 1 for our pool another for an outdoor gfi by the pool. can't trip either, no juice. Im pissed I now know he did things a bit illegal to avoid waitng for poco, and we are currently waiting for municipal inspection, I called him with my concerns regarding the unmarked panel and possible inspection failure , he was arrogant told me to let him worry about it, said he was too busy to argue and inevietably hung up on me. I want to call the inspector myself RIGHT NOW and have him come out and see what this panel looks like, I do not want to give that electrician the opportunity to come out right before to fix things up, he has left tis like this for 2 weeks now. BTW I just figured out that the pool and outdoor gfi are not hooked up,as I was trying to label the panel MYSELF, this mofo should have done it, isn't that part of his job ??? bear in mind this was a ca$h job, he pushed hard to get it done , my guess is he needed cash quick, hurried to get it done and is not concerned any longer, my biggest mistake besides hiring him, was paying him in full,reagrding the handling of this situation, what would YOU do?????

This is a Very Good Thing. It means it will be exactly what you design (unless you're working with Abbot and Costello) and fit exactly into your space. We did a lot of retrofitting and it was a real joy to watch the cabinetry take shape in our basement.

We bought a house under construction (YEARS AGO) and got so much more having them site built. There was a long wall not slated for anything. The cabinet guy made 18" deep 7' tall units on that 12' wall. They were fabulous.

Good good luck with yours. Agree with all the earlier posters stated.

Thanks so much for taking time to respond. I've seen his work so this should be a good thing. I've been campaigning for inset cabinets, so this just gave me more ammunition!!! I think I have DH convinced now.
