Urn grouted and part of backsplash.

I have the urn grouted in black as all of you suggested and part of the kitchen backsplash done. I have to take it in segments as it is very slow going. Lots of leaning over the counter and wierd positions. I will get it done quicker if the weather turns cold again as that keeps me inside and out of the studio. I spent almost all day out there the last two days cutting up some dishes I got some time back for two garden urns.

WOW! WOW! WOW!!!! I LOVE IT! I have threatened my MIL that her fiestaware is mine when she passes. She always poo poos me when I say that! I bet if she saw your backsplash she would think differently!!!! It is awesome!!

OH This is SO SO SO BEAUTIFUL!! I could look at it all day.

I can bet it is literally a pain to grout. I know how hard it can be to just lean over and wash the back splash. Course I am short adding to the problem. LOL I have to get a stool to stand on to reach the corner in this kitchen. Talk about feeling dorky!! So I put the microwave in the corner making it a shorter reach.

I do not remember. Did you put this directly on the wall or use the backer board first?

I think this is SO OUTSTANDING!! Bet you never want to leave your house and move!!

1/16th versus 3/32nds, I hate to say this, but it's up to you. You do good work. you're conscientious. If your wall is flat, if you have good trowel technique in terms of keeping a steady angle as you put thinset on the wall so you put an even amount of thinset on the wall, you can probably get good results with 1/16th. The tile is rectified. That's good. Your wall is flat. Doubly good. If the tile is flat, which it should be, you should be triply good to go. I like a Felker TM-7 blade. Sometimes cross-branded under Husqvarna, but it's a Felker blade. I use it for hard porcelains and even granite. It's my favorite go to blade with porcelain. When cutting inside "L" cuts, I have a moving table saw. I'll slide the table forward, cutting into the tile. When I get to my stop line, I'll rotate the front edge of the tile (the end away from me) up into the blade, keeping the rear edge of the tile (next to me) "hinged" to the fence of the sliding table. It squares the cut. I get a nice clean inside cut. The larger the tile, then sometimes the less you can hinge the tile up. If need be, and it's usually not, I can clean up the inside 90 with the light touch of a grinder. If a picture is worth a thousand words, let me know, I'll post a photo.

Sully, I'm pretty sure it's tumbled noce. There are other names for the same stone, so I can find them out for you if you like. It just looks a lot different with the light grout. It is hard to picture which is why I sent the pic to xoxosmom. I don't think it would look right in her kitchen. Darker grout would look better with the darker cabinets IMO! I don't know the name of the grout color but it is almost white and changes the look completely. But thanks for the compliment!

slowmedown - your name is telling! ;) You would probably have this project finished by now. I see my reply post from yesterday doesn't appear - I'll try to put up some colored pencil sketches soon, but I'm at the beginning stages here. The other rooms are getting roughed in, and I'm just talking to the cabinet maker today. I'm cutting big pieces of paper the sizes of the countertops, etc., and measuring where the mosaic will go, and reading this board for tips and inspirations. Looks like a consensus then... I'll take out the top 5 tiles. The 6th tile down is coped around the bottom edge of the cabinet so I'll keep that one in. Natesgramma - The paint around the top portion of the window is the same paint as the rest of the kitchen. A white crown molding will go all around, including above the window area. I wasn't planning on doing a window treatment as I like that particular window bare. Yes, I love Anita's backsplash. At first I think the tiles should be the same height as the ones under the range hood, and noticed Anita's window and range hood are on two different walls. BUT I think mine will look fine if they're not level. If anything, I think it makes the area under the range hood more of a focal point. Thanks all, I needed a confirmation that it wasn't just me. DH isn't convinced but I'll show him this post. How long can we wait before we pry off the tiles, I wonder?

Flag!!! WOW....that is just the most AMAZING backsplash. Just beautiful.

And I love the way the urn turned out. There were multiple pictures of the urn - did you grout in gray then painted the grout black??? Gorgeous!!! I just love the tesserae you used - it was all so unique!!

SHADES- I know what you mean about being short, I am only
5'2" and it is a reach.
LYNDALU- I did grout in black, but some of the lighting makes it look grey. I did several pictures trying to get eack side of it.
SUN FUN- I hope you get the Fiesta, I remember my grandmother on my fathers side selling hers at auction when I was about 9 or 10. If I only knew then what I know now....

Oh FLAG!!! THAT BACKSPLASH!!!! WOW! It takes my breath away it's so beautiful! OVER THE TOP! And the urn is amazing too, love it done in black! But that Backsplash!!! It looks like a million bucks!!!

Funny you should have cup handles in your work.
I've been saving coffee cups for a long time and
have more than I'll ever be able to use. I told hubby
just a few days ago that I wanted to make a mosaic
wall of cup handles, and he just said "Uh. Okay."

ME too,I'm in love with that urn,I looked up where you bought the tiles but I could'nt find them .I really like all the shapes and the colors on the black are great.And of course the backsplash what can i say that hasn't been said it is fantastic and so much more...what talent

Hahaha 5'2" I am 2" taller than you!! It REALLY must have been a long reach for you. I think I would have plunked myself up on the counter.

It's nice to see Fiesta tiles get a proper contrast, something that is rarely done. The black and white checks was a brilliant choice. Well done Flag, nice work.

That is THE most FANTASTIC backsplash I've ever seen!!! I LOVE IT!!! At least you're 5'2"... I'm just 5 feet!!! I'll take your 2 inches and swap ya mine zero inches HA!!

You are a master mosaicer!!! I've never seen Fiestaware here in Oz and BOY!! would I love to get my grubby little hands on some of that color!!

And that urn is scrumptious!! That's the neatest grout job yet!! I bow to your excellence, me Lady!!

RCHOVEY---your backsplash is NOT boring tile. I love it. I had already started mine when I saw yours and I love yours. Besides, you can take yours down and jazz it up any time you choose, Mine is non-removable! LOL

Flag: I come back about a million times now, I just LOVE that Backsplash! I could spend the rest of my life getting up in the morning to that puppy!! Do you just kinda find yourself wandering into the kitchen just to gaze at it???!!!

Of course, I do a lot of gazing and the funny thing, I did this and I still see something every time I look at it. I leave the undercounter lights on so it is lit up when I get up and come in to make coffee in the mornings. I am looking at it today and trying to get up the energy to finish grouting. It is COLD outside today so it is an inside project for me, that way I don't have to run all the heat in the studio today. Thanks for the compliments.

Flag, the urn looks great! I love those tiles you used and the black grout is perfect. Your backsplash is OUTSTANDING!!! Gosh, I think this needs to be publicized. You were so creative with it and the colors just pop! And then I LOVE the accent S&P shakers.

Love love LOVE the urn! Are you going to pot it with anything?

The backsplash is definitely a work of art. Colorama! I am dying to do the showers, but we hope to be moving within five years so I have to worry about resale. Once I move, though, all bets are off.

Wonderful! Makes ya happy just to look at them. Love both the splash and the urn! Trying to come up with bright tiles to do an address marker for outside and these are so inspiring!
