Do you think I should get an 18" or a 22" deep range hood?

Do I have to get a 48" hood if I have a 48" range?
Comments (8)Adding to the good advice given above, I'd suggest that you search the many hood discussions here and I especially recommend posts by kaseki. You will find that what you are considering is actually counterproductive to your goals. To summarize briefly: First, if you are putting cabinets over that 48" range top, read the installation manual for your rangetop. On most rangetops, cooktops and ranges, the manual will specify that bases of the upper cabinets should be at least 30 inches above the stove top. IIRC, some even specify 36". Going lower is considered a fire hazard. Thus, you really can't gain cabinet space over a 48" range/rangetop by using a smaller hood. Second, the effectiveness of ventilation hoods has as much or more to do with hood "capture area" as blower power. If you want to try to make up for poor capture, you need a huge increase in blower force. Think about using a vacuum cleaner. The stronger the blower, the more noise the system will make as you try to suck everything in -- maybe sucking pets and and small children off the floor :>) --- and a very loud roar. Same thing if you put a powerful vent fan in the ceiling. That kind of power utterly defeats your desire for a quiet hood. Third, a huge step-up in blower power means a huge step up in the need for make-up air, and that can and likely will be a major expense. Doesn't matter if your locality does not have codes that require MUA. We're talking the laws of physics here and avoiding backdrafting HVAC, water heaters, fireplaces, etc. Fourth, while a properly sized and designed hood may be larger than you seem to like, it also can be a lot quieter. Consider that there are two sources of noise in hoods: (a) the noise of the fans and their motors and (b) the air rushing through the baffles/filters and into the ducts. With a properly sized hood, the fans can run lower and slower because the hood enables the capture. Slower fans are quieter....See Morequick opinion needed! not sure I should do what I'm thinking of
Comments (45)hi OB2B, so nice to meet you today? did you enjoy the tour? I had a chance to see a few of the houses this afternoon. It was a great day. steph2000, thanks so much! i think you are right re: the semi-flush. right now I am going to take a breather until the hood is ready. I pushed really hard to get this done for the tour today -- there were so many people here this week. will be nice to take a little break. deedles, I purchased the wolf 20" riser with shelf for behind the range. it isn't up yet. the guys were having trouble sliding the range out. the riser has to attach to the back of the range (i would have assumed it could just attach to the wall) and so the range has to slide out. The marble countertops are very tight to the range with really no gap at all so it was difficult for them and they were rushing so much to get so many things done that I suggested we address it later when they can slow down a little (I was a little afraid of them damaging the doors on my range ... they were pullling on them trying to slide it out and that was definitely not okay with me!)....See MoreHow deep should range hood be with a 12” deep marble shelf above range
Comments (50)I am so happy to have found this post! We are doing the same thing but the shelf itself will be much shallower (thinking only 6" from the wall). I would hesitate from putting plates and bowls over the range because of the aforementioned grease issues and plan to just have small items (salt cellar, pepper mill, etc)....See More27 in deep range hood with induction cooktop on 24in lower cabinets
Comments (6)Hood entry apertures should overlap the cooking zone by the size of the pans on the hobs plus the plume expansion, which might be approximated by a ten-degree to vertical angle. With a 42 x 27 hood, it should be large enough to mount as high as 36 inches. Function first! I should add that usually the counter overhang is not the visual issue for most who worry about it here, it is the amount of extension past the cabinets that bound it. Since upper cabinets are typically 12 or 15 inches, a 27 may not be significantly more obtrusive than a 24. Hood shape may affect this. If you must have 24, then Wolf has a Pro Wall Hood that is 42 x 24. (Page 151 of the 2023 Wolf Design Guide.)...See Moretexasgal47
