'Previous Life'

I'm starting a new thread b/c something occured to me reading a recent thread that actually doesn't have to do with the main topic of that thread but that was just a phrase that happened to be used in the discussion. On this other thread, somebody referred to their DH's first marriage & kids as his "previous life", which I found interesting. Only b/c my first thoughts when I hear terminology like that have to do with the concept of reincarnation, as in the "previous life" being OVER, ended by death. We've all certainly heard and used the term "previous marriage", which seems neutral and apt enough... I guess the distinction is that the legal bond of *marriage* is something that is over and has ended, but it's only a part of one's *life*, which continues. I guess I perceive an element of *finality* to the phrase "previous life" being applied to the kids of a previous marriage; literally as though they were not a part of this man's life as he now knows it but were part of that other life that is now over, that which this new life is not. Which is odd to me because I've always just conceived of "life" as one big continuous thread... and I've never thought about the notion of someone relegating their offspring to the past (although I guess, sadly, some parents do) even with whatever dramatic changes in circumstance, or whatever chapters *within* that life may come to a close.

Before anyone jumps on me for being nitpicky about semantics, let me be the first to admit that I am! People have always told me I read too much into things, esp. words, and I'm sure I do sometimes...

Also, my intention in bringing up this "previous life" phrasing isn't to attack anyone (though I understand it might be taken that way, and I apologize in advance). It's really meant more as a question ---a really honest probing question--- about how the children from the previous marriage are viewed, deep down, in terms of where they fit into the "life" that is now. (Does it make it easier somehow to think about his first marriage/kids as belonging to a whole different LIFE? Does that mean he was a whole different MAN? What is the meaning or consequence of the divide between the NEW life/man and those children of the now-moot life/man, children who are of that previous past but who nonetheless continue to exist in the present?) And to point out, from a SD perspective (though again, an admittedly word-sensitive one) that even young kids can often pick up on the nuances of casual phrasings like this and respond to those overtones/implications more than the manifest content of what you are saying or mean to say. For example, if you're trying very hard to do and say things that are inclusive, even-handed and fully accepting/integrating of the kids from a previous marriage into the new family but you're using phrases such as "his previous life" to refer directly to these selfsame children, they are likely to be quite confused and uneasy about their belonging in the "current life". But what's more, YOU might be unsure how they fit in and conflicted as to their presence, which can make things uncomfortable for you too. Not to mention DH.
