I just had an epiphany

while I was typing my last post and mentioned the SD's new step dad resents her. Tell me if I'm nuts.

Up until recently mom has *hated* me ~ resented me, talked trash about me to SD, always took the opposite position from anything I said or did . . . in general just made things very difficult and ugly. She has now been remarried for close to two years and has a 1 year old baby. Since November or so we have been hearing about several fights and much tension in their household. Remember, we even got called to come pick up SD early to "get her out of that environment." I think sdad is pretty immature and resents the time SD takes away from *his* family, but that is speculation. I know a lot of the disagreements stem from SD - mom has always let her get away with everything and sdad disagrees. They want to regulate things now - hence the talk with us about how we do things here - but it's a hard job to teach a 13 year old new tricks. From what SD says sdad makes a point of ignoring her or mocking her when he is ticked about something, mom takes SD's side, fight begins. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Fast forward to my epiphany. Do you think mom could be realizing that step parents have two options - treat their skids like I do or treat them like her husband does - and that she now appreciates that I treat SD as my own rather than a 2nd class citizen? I am her first experience with a step as her parents are still together, so maybe she is seeing that I wasn't trying to replace her or compete with her, I was just trying to give SD the best life possible because I love her?

OR - am I totally giving her more credit than I should and she likely knew if she wanted free room and food she had to be nice to me?!? :-)
