HELP with granite choice...have multicolor slate floors

We are redoing our kitchen and chose natural Indian multicolor slate tiles for the floor. There is a LOT of natural color variation and clefting. Our cabinets are cherry with a pecan stain, in Shaker style and rust finish square knobs. We desparately need help in choosing a granite. Our contractor needs us to make a decision as quickly as possible, as the granite is holding up other parts of the house project.

Initially we were looking at darker green granites like Uba Tuba and Verde Butterfly. However, when looking at slabs the one we liked best was Golden River. We like the movement and the colors work very well with the colors already in the kitchen and living areas (SW Blonde and Mannered gold paints). The Golden River has lots and lots of movement, with golden brown and gray veins running through it.

Our only concern is with how the Golden River (or any other choice) would look with the multicolor slate. Our tile guy just started the slate floors yesterday, and the slate does have a lot of color and a *very* rustic look.

Open a free account on photobucket.com or someplace like that. Follow their directions to upload your images to that site. Once the images are uploaded, they will be assigned an html code. Copy and paste that code into the body of a message on this site. When you then preview your posting, the image should show up.

We just bought a house and im really anxious to paint the kitchen. The oak is pretty but i really prefer the lighter feel of whites. I was thinking painting the cabinets BM white dove and possibly the wall colors BM Fieldstone (love Sally Wheat!) but im torn bc im not sure if these colors will look good with the granite counter tops, slate floor and backsplash. We are only going to paint right now so whatever i choose must match the exisiting floors and counters that are already there. Please help - would love to hear your suggestions!

I'm not sure about the bacteria breeding ground, Quadesl. Is that true of granite? Good point, Trebruchet. I'm not sure about the IAPMO approval. I'm not sure how that process works. I'll have to check into it. Thanks, circuspeanut. I hadn't even thought about that. The slate sink is 1" thick. The granite sink is 1 1/2" thick. I think our granite counter tops will only be 2cm thick. But then I guess the front "edge" of granite countertops is usually thicker. Hmm... circuspeanut, if your slate countertops are 100 years old, then slate must be very durable! Is the maintenance easy? Do you have to seal it periodically, and if so, how often? Thanks so much for the input!

Hello all!! My husband has been templating for and installing Slate countertops for years! Yes, Slate is WONDERFUL as a countertop! When properly honed, it can be as smooth as butter. As far as maintenance, a little hot soapy water and you are all set! And, yes, I have Slate in my own kitchen. It NEVER needs sealing and is stain resistant. ( It is only 3% pourous) When small scratches occur (and they will!!) all you need is some oooo steel wool to buff it right out. Deeper scratches will require some fine sandpaper followed up by the steel wool. My husband works exclusively with Sheldon Slate in Granville, New York. He does the templating, delivery and installations and they do all of his fabricating. The range of colors and their craftmanship is phenominal! If you are looking for a durable, long lasting, old-fashioned and absolutely beautiful countertop for your kitchen, whether a new building or a remodel, I strongly suggest Slate. It's forever!!

Luckily, my partners dad is a retired electrician so we can go hog wild on the lights :). I am a bit worried about the slate myself. There were some more muted choices at the store, one was Mongolian desert...matches the yellow river better and is more modern and muted. I agree the copper rust is too much -there are other more consistent slates that could possibly provide a calmer palette, but still have a few splashes of color. The room is small but that is counterbalanced by a 62 inch wide window and a full lite door...makes finding upper cabinet space hard though :) If not slate do you have any other particular natural stone ideas? I'm trying to go with "real"...I hate paying a lot for fake! We will take the wild movement in the granite and sacrifice some movement and variaiblity in the floor. Luckily there are a lot of granite yards here in Cleveland, so that helped pick things out:). I fell in love with desert gold but that was a no go with the partner!! We will get samples to help with shopping.

I only saw your posting the other day. I was struggling with the same decision. I finally found one my husband and I both REALLY liked. It is called Giallo Antico. It is a tight pattern (not busy). Relatively neutral in color and looks great with the multicolor tile. It compliments it instead of fighting for attention. :-) The floor is the Star of the show! We Love That Slate. Another granite we liked really well was Cafe' Imperial. Beautiful But dark brown and it wouldn't work well with our dark cabinetry. Good luck. Post Pics when you can.

I can not think of a better granite to go with
what you describe. It is going to look amazing
with your cabinetry and floors.
