Bedroom renovation. Walls, floors, doors.

I'm trying to get rid of my McDonald's paint scheme.

It was painted by my father when I was... little.

Maybe 5 or 6. I wanted all red, but that didn't happen obviously. :] This yellow color hurts my eyes very badly and gives me a headache when I'm in my room all day working on a school project or something like that. It's just... too bright. Way, way too bright. I'm basically going to be putting on a solid door [get rid of that accordion thing]. Repaint all of the walls, Put down new flooring [it's a very very dirty/dusty maroon color if you can't tell] since the carpet that is there now has been down for 20+ years.

So I'm mostly looking for suggestions on paint color and a floor color to match.

Possibly some molding and ceiling suggestions wouldn't hurt either.

Or even a more beneficial room layout idea [okay, i know that's pushing it!]

Oh, I'm in the process of cleaning it, that's why it looks... messy... ;D

I edited them to be vertial... the ones that are sideways...

But apparently I'm challenged or something and can't get it to save right.

But it's just to show color, so... I guess it doesn't really matter :]

It's basically all bright bright yellow, with that maroon color strike and trim, with white trim on the top.

Gosh, you could go in so many ways and anything would be an improvement. I can see why you find this jaring! Perhaps you can tell us a bit about your self and your style or colors you like. What do you think of a grey color? It would be a nice backdrop for your posters--esp. the B/W ones. Do you plan to keep all the posters on the walls? Is there a favorite poster or other artwork or bedding that you can work with. Usually what people do is to choose a bedding or artwork and choose a paint/floor color based on that by picking one of the colors from that or a complementary color.

Have you been to IKEA? You may find some inspiration there for furniture that is not too bulky for a bedroom since it appears you need for storage space to organize your things. They are great for organizing computer and electric stuff, books, etc. on a budget. They come ready to assemble which is not too difficult.

Well, originally I was thinking of doing Black on the bottom, with a white or cream on top. about 1/3 of the way up with matching tiling. Just regular laminent flooring stuff (or whatever it's called), cheap and easy to put in.

The more I looked around here, the more I seemed to really like Silver Sage. Seems to be a very popular color, and I can see why :) I just don't know of a matching floor tiling scheme that would go nicely. I was even thinking of hardwood flooring since we still have all the tools from when we did our flooring downstairs.

After I posted this thread, I went out to a local furniture store and grabbed one of those cheap Bed frames... The instamatic kind for 29 bucks, and set it up...
Also cleared out a Ton of extra unneeded things around the room, It looks very different now.

I'm not sure about if I will keep the posters or not.
I guess it depends on how much I like the color scheme when it's all painted :) The posters are mostly there to just cover up the yellow now, because before the walls were totally uncovered and it was just horrid walking in here when the sun is shining in. Just wayyyy too bright. Although, I know for sure I will keep the two paintings in the last picture, on the far left and right. (the creature ones) Since they were specially painted for me by a friend of mine :]

There is an IKEA down the road, I'll check it out tomorrow when I go out for some more stuff since there's one down the road =)

In the two places I've lived with such an arrangement, some investigation into the original floorplan has revealed that there's been either an addition or some remodeling going on. And people just took the easy way out and slapped a new room on right next to an existing room, without bothering to add a hallway or the like. In my grandparents' house, you had to go through their bedroom to get to the upstairs bathroom, which was, for a time, the only bathroom in the house, other than a toilet in the basement. The house was built in 1865 and the bathroom was originally a closet. It was the only space for a bathroom. That is, until my grandparents had 7 kids and took the smallest bedroom and made it into a bathroom. They also made a pantry off the kitchen into a powder room, to get a downstairs bathroom. My brother and SIL have a child with disabilities. They needed to either buy a wheelchair accessible house or modify the one they owned. They looked at many houses that had been remodeled for handicap access--SIL was appalled, really, at some of the remodeling. She said it was clear they just added a ramp where it was easiest and threw on extra rooms where it was easiest to expand the house, without any consideration of the flow of traffic through the house or how the rooms would open up to each other, or even trying to match the style/ finishes of the original home with what was going on in the addition. She mentioned bedrooms opening directly off the kitchen, or off the master bedroom, or just a section of the family room walled off to create a room. In one house, they punched through the dining room wall and added a bedroom/bath right off the dining room. And another where they enclosed a porch off the kitchen to make the accessible bedroom, so everyone entering the house walked through the accessible room into the kitchen, unless they used the front door. Which no one does in farm country. They ended up hiring an architect to add on a wing to their house--you can't tell where the old house ends and the new wing begins. They did end up with a dining room with no windows, but it has two sets of french doors opening into rooms with tons of windows and sunlight and you really don't notice. They paid extra to get the addition done right, but I think in the long run they have a house that doesn't *look* handicapped accessible and hasn't lost any resale value.

With the bed on the wall to the right, I would put the dresser on the wall in the lower left hand corner as you're looking at the floor plan, so it's close to the closet. I would not put it in the area with the bed because with the total width of the room at 11"4", you will not have a lot of clearance between the foot of the bed and the dresser. If you are planning to have a TV in the room, it could go either on the wall space between the bathroom and the closet or on the wall in the upper left hand side of the room. The lower right hand corner might be a nice place for a reading chair, ottoman and floor lamp.

I would absolutely NOT use that dark gray floor. And you are doing things backward--select all your hard/permanent finishes and colors first, the wall paint color last. For the most timeless look, a medium brown wood, REAL wood, will go with anything, and will never be out of style. Gray floors have already had their moment. And laminate is an awful choice for a floor.

Don't worry about the mess. I think it's great you want to spruce up your room. Below is a pic of my DS's room (also messy). Just wanted to show you this piece we got for him last year at IKEA and he assembled himself. Ir was sold as a vertical bookshelf, but we put it on it's side so he could have extra table space--which he does use! We plan to get a laser printer and put it on top before school resumes.

The paintings are nice, but I'm not sure you want to pull a color from either of those. Do you have any bedding you plan to use other than the white comforter?

I think Silver Sage would be a great choice. Love that color and looks great paired with black accents as I see you have for your blinds, TV, etc. Then look for some black or silver pieces at IKEA for your storage (CDs, components, school stuff, etc.) I was at Costco today and they have the laminant flooring on sale--oak and maple. They are pretty indestructable and you don't have to baby as much as hardwood. IKEA also has some nice and inexpensive floor rugs you could put on top if you like. As for your door, I would suggest matching to the door style in the rest of the place.
