Gel stain kitchen long with pics
Comments (35)Hi All! Here is my lists of supplies: 2 inch foam applicator brush Minwax gel stain in Aged Oak and Mahogany Minwax poly in semi gloss Mineral spirits on hand I DID NOT sand my cabinets prior to staining, I only cleaned them. I did not use a graining tool. I just used the foam applicator brush to "pull" down the wood grain. Here is a picture that shows the paint color, the stains, and how each looks with the different layers of color. Color changes with one and two coats of stain: Love the yard- I don't know since my husband did the cutting, but I would think there is way to do it. Maybe score with a utility knife? Galvin, I think the post pretty much explains most of it. I used the red as my base coat, brushed on the aged oak, kinda mottled it with a wash cloth to add texture, let dry. After the first stain dried, I went over the cabinets with a thinned (thinned with mineral spirits) Mahogany in a painting motion to resemble wood grain. Cherry has a very fine grain so a graining tool would have looked out of place. I let that dry and followed up with poly. Anything in particular you were wondering about? I know it sounds simple, and it was. Mary-Ruth thanks! I love how your painted chair turned out(hopefully that is you) I am doing mine now!...See MoreAnyone use general finishes antique walnut gel stain?
Comments (16)navi_jen, sorry for the late reply, as I just found this thread again. I'm sorry to say I didn't take a picture of the Brown Mahogany. When the second coat went bad (basically randomly lifted off portions of the first coat, exposing the original stain), I was too mad to take photos. I wish I had, because it would have been more useful trying to figure out what went wrong. The attached photo is one of my favorites in Houzz. My desk wasn't quarter-sawn oak, but the color from the Brown Mahogany was reminiscent of this wood. I regret applying the first coat with a sock, even though everyone raves about it. I think it went on too thick and there were definitely streaks from the sock's ribs. Maybe I didn't wipe it off well enough or wait long enough between coats. Anyway, by the time I came up for air, I had stripped and sanded the desk down to bare wood. I called General Finishes and a nice man told me that since I was at bare wood, he would stain it the conventional way. That's what he would do. So I did and I'm a happy camper. However, the color isn't as nice as the gel stain Brown Mahogany. It's a mid brown, but definitely not java. Comments (18)I think I would try changing out the hardware and painting the background wall color above the cabs something dark like a rich chocolate brown. Or a deeper green. That would allow the lighter cabnets to really pop and take center stage. If that doens,t make enough of a change in the room for you then glazing may just be the right thing to do. I think with those cabs glazing could well be the answer your looking for if they were done with a base color thats opposite on the color wheel it would really help to cut the orange your not liking and glazing would be a easier option than a major allover color change. To get a solid color change that matchs on that many cabs would be more difficult then a glaze. I would def. try painting that upper background color first though. I think it would give that kitchen the pop of color it needs to really stand out....See MoreGel Stain Cabinet and Evolution of Rooms Pics
Comments (23)Jessicaml, I assure you I never meant to offend, and kitchenaddict, I am glad no offense was taken. I think sometimes we get so close to a project that it can help to have more pairs of eyes looking at the result. I know that I have seen suggestions here that people have made that I may not have considered, or didn't notice, and I thought it was great that they did - otherwise, that might have been an opportunity missed. Speaking of the old master painting, what about moving that to the space where the Baroni pix is now, and putting the one from the DR wall where the old master was hanging? I think it would draw great attention to the piece, plus because it IS so different from the feel of the other pieces in the space, it might be a better fit there....See Moreblfenton
