Can someone give me a quick photoshop tutorial

I have photoshop as well as several photoshop-for-dummies type books, and despite the fact that I used to be a very successful web programmer who knows her way around a computer, I can't figure out what I need to do to paint my wall a different color in a photograph. I've even taken a class in photoshop and still never figured it out. I seem to have some kind of brain-block when it comes to photoshop. Argh!

Is there a place on the web where I could go to get some step by step instructions on how to do this (and JUST this - every photoshop tutorial I find goes off into lots of stuff I don't need to do and then I get lost!)? I'd just ask someone here to do it for me, but I have a LOT of colors I want to see in a couple different rooms, and I don't want to be a burden on the forum photoshoppers. Plus it seems stupid to ask someone to do this for me when I should darn well be able to figure it out on my own.

Any guidance appreciated!

Sometimes I select a colored area by using Magic Wand. It chooses all the approximate colors in the area and you can set it in Options to be very specific, or to be looser with its selection.

Play around with Magic Wand a little and see if that helps. Good luck!

All you need to do is play with the program and eventually you can figure it out. That is how I learned but I do not know everyting.

As far as I know you can change the color of the walls in several ways:
One way is:
Open the photograph
select the magic wand tool
click in the area to be changed
now you can press delete and the area will get white
(optional) or just keep the old color under the new layers.

When the area is still selected you go to edit/fill and ok. the area automaticly will get the color that you have in the foreground or in the background. You could use the paint brush instead the fill command and start applying the color. (do you know how to select and change colors?)
another way is when the area is selected, you go to layer/new fill layer/and solid color or pattern/ok and ok again after selecting the color you want. The advantage of using this way (by layers) is that you can change the layers easily: layer/change layer content/and solid color or pattern/ok and ok after selecting what you want.

You can also use the lazo tool to select the area to be changed. If it is an square, the easiest way to select is using the rectangular marquee tool.

I am going to resurrect this post, in the hopes that someone stumbles on it for me :-) Background - Most everyone will use this entrance. I don't know how deep it is going to be. Other features of the house that will be changed -- I want to do a siding and rock/stone combo of some sort, ditch the brick I want to do two window dormers over the garage. And the window to the right will be a double window. So.... that leaves this entry. I am just not digging it. I know the draft lady did this because the other plan I liked so well had huge grand entries, and I was torn between it and the country plan with big front porch. I have seen many that I like better, but thought I would see what anyone else liked :-) We are real country folk, and this porch will get used regularly. The way the circle drive is, in relation to the front door and the back door, I think most visitors will stop at the top of the circle and go right up to the front door, rather than park and then walk all the way around to the back. I dont have a color scheme yet. My barns are barn red with white trim, but they arent side by side or anything. Oh, will probably do a metal roof. If not the whole house, at least the porch. Well, who said women change their minds too much? They didn't know my DH. He saw the #3 photo of the overmantel's sujafr posted and said Oh, I really like that. Hello, that's what I've been telling him all along, but he couldn't picture it or this one really looked good to him. So it looks like that's the one we are going to go with. My original idea had sconces, but since he already sheetrocked over the electric, I won't make him dig them out. We can get by without the sconces since we have spot lights on the ceiling shining down on the fireplace. I'm so glad he decided on that one because the more I pictured Demi's in my room the more I realized it would be too formal for my decor. I'm planning on making that room casual and that overmantle is so beautiful and formal. Thanks anyway Demi for the inspiration of your beautiful fireplace and overmantle. Thanks everyone for your input. You helped us to finally get a final design on this. I swear I feel like I should be paying you folks for your time. Really!!

newhomebuilder...don't mind me, I'm going blind! Seriously, I didnt see the hip section on the left but now I do. So with your drawing, there will be three triangular shapes including the exsiting hip. Gotcha! When my parents did theirs the roof line was just straight across and it was very easy to add on. Their door was not recessed back at all. So now I want to see what you're doing to YOUR house...LOL. I thought you had a brand new one?? rdsso, I can't wait to see how this turns out for you! The island is St. Cecelia? I think the 2 x 4 with the mosaic gives enough contrast. I am not set on any particular way, I am just asking for someone to photoshop the two so I can see what they look like. I am leaning more towards the one with the mosaic but I would like to see it first to totally decide if I like it. Can someone photoshop for me? Also I really like the subway size verses the regular tile size, so I wouldn't be happy going that direction.

marthaelena, you explained it very well.

If I'm just going to be painting a room, I much prefer to use Ben Moore's program than Photoshop. The colors are sometimes weird but I know I can select out the space much more concise. I have Photoshop Elements which is a junuor version. I have trouble with the magic wand tool and getting the right area selected. I often use the magnetic lasso and try to select it out. Then, under layers, I choose "fill layer" and choose a color. It's definitely a long learning curve on that software.

I too struggle with PS, so if you are willing to provide instructions on how to select and change colors, in your easy to understand style, you would have one appreciative student.
