granite dust, best way to clean cabinets

Yep, I knew it wasn't a good idea to do any cut in place granite but the fabricator said that was the only way they would do my cooktop cut out. The way they explained it was that they wanted to have it centered properly in the cabinet and also because the piece of granite was so large they didn't want to risk breaking it at the narrow edge. So, I rationalized that the cutting would be done over an empty space, they would be there vacuuming constantly as the cut was done,yada, yada, yada. Well you can guess how this turned out---fine granite dust all down the front of the entire row of cabinets.

Now my problem is how to clean it off without scratching the espresso finish on the cabinets. My only thoughts are maybe a soft brush like the big makeup brushes professional makeup artists use or a swiffer. Any suggestions or experiences will be greatly appreciated.

Damp microfiber cloths work great. Just plain water, wring out the cloth really well, and wipe.

If you have a lot of dust, use the DRY cloth first or a swiffer duster to get most of it off, then follow with the damp cloth.

OK, first you get some cashew butter... I have no cult secrets to convey. The safest way to remove blushing, or fogging, due to moisture is by releasing the moisture from the shellac. It's water vapor that's causing the clouding, so get rid of the water vapor. The proper way to do this is to use a french polishing pad and charge it with just alcohol and apply it to the fogged area without dragging finish. As the shellac softens it opens to allow water to escape. Technique, however, is not a trivial part of this. Now, for the secret society version. Using an industrial heat-gun, slowly warm the affected area, using Jedi control, and the moisture will evaporate, or at least vacate the finish. This works about 50% of the time for me. What you're describing sounds more like something I'd do for an occasional deep cleaning. For weekly maintenance, I'd use a hand vac or small shop vac (I have both Oreck and Shop Vac 1 gal) with a soft brush attachment, opening the doors and doing the back surfaces too. Smooth and shiny isn't a good choice for a kitchen from both a safety and maintenance aspect. Shiny floors require a lot more maintenance than matte ones. They show everything. Your cleaning routine is fine. It just needs to be performed more often if you want pristine floors. The shine is inherent in the granite due to it's being polished with diamond polishing pads. Any topical solution applied on top of it will make it even more hazardous underfoot than it already is when wet.

What kind of paint did you use on the walls? I would assume it's at least a satin being in the kitchen. I would just wash it down with warm water and a couple drops of dawn. If it's flat I would just use a feather duster. I agree with oakleyok if it is bad make them send out someone to clean it.

Geez! I'm sorry to hear they did that; I'd have thought they'd have had the consideration and professionalism to do exactly what you thought would happen.

I'm no granite expert, but how about your soft brush idea combined with a shop vac or regular vac hose right below your brush. You might be able to use a large soft new paintbrush. I'd fear if you used the brush attachment of the vac it might drag grit across the surface of your cabinets and scratch them. With you wielding the brush, you can tap it off between sweeps. Thank you everyone. I'm off to Lowe's to gather supplies and I feel better about this now that I've heard from all of you.
