More Weird Gifts

Some of you may remember my post of last October concerning the bouquet of flowers SS received from his BM for his 16th birthday -- I thought it was weird.

So moving on to Christmas. Guess what she gives him as a gift. Gift Certificates from her that say things like:

"This entitles you to ask me for a hug anytime you want one"

"This entitles you to ask me to come visit you in ____________ (our city)"

"This entitles you to ask me to bring you to _____________ (her city)"

Now, I know it's the thought that counts, and I also understand the sentiment of these "gifts", but heck shouldn't he expect those things from her without having to have a damn certificate for it? And has she forgotten that he's 16? Honestly, am I being too critical? Isn't this a very childish thing to give a teenage boy? I don't know anymore, maybe it's me!

Yes, of course he should expect to have those things as a part of day-to-day life.

Maybe she's broke & clueless?

I've seen "coupons" like that, but for "extra" services;
an old boyfriend once gave me a card with a coupon in it that said he would change the oil & wash & wax the car.

If I were going to give a coupon to a teen-aged boy, I'd make it for taking him & 3 of his friends to (fill in the blank).

It just sounds like she's clueless;

Ditto Sylvia. I used to make my mom things like that for Mother's Day.

I agree, the woman is probably broke and, yeah, I guess it's the thought that counts---but I agree with Sylvia again that a better option would have been:

Gift certificate for you and three of your friends to order pizza and go see a movie.

Or whatever.

A hug anytime he likes??? A) he should get that anytime and B) not exaclty up a 16 year old boy's alley, huh?

Patty_cakes, try making photo albums for family members. Since we don't live close enough to most of our family for them to participate in all our girls (and now grandson's) activities, every year for Christmas my parents, MIL, Grandmothers, and Great Aunt the photo albums from the past year. I begin with Dec 1st and go thru Thanksgiving. During the year I have reprints made and keep each persons in a seperate box in order. Then after Thanksgiving I start cropping, glueing... till they are all done. That is their primary present and for the past 20 years it has been a hit. The cousins and other relatives get copies of their family members I happen to take and some pics from our major events (graduation, new baby, cruise... ) put into a small album. They too seem to appreciate the pictures. Personally I love getting the dishtowels with the croched tops, dishtowel aprons, hot pads, oven mits, anything practical. One of the things I like to do is give practical gifts in unusual ways, socks as Santa's longjohns, kitchen towels as kitchen angels, towels folded as animals, potholders folded as bows, flower vases filled with smelly jelly (that can be removed when dried). Seven years ago when our youngest was in 4th grade, she made DH a Christmas tie. He still wears it every Christmas then carefully packs it away till next year. beverly

Wease, Did you determine that the strange wiring is because of the alarm panel? Are you saying that your "inside" wires(the ones going to your phones/jacks) are in the vicinity of the alarm control panel at some other point in the house? Normally, they should be somewhere in the vicinity of your electric fuse panel. If your inside wires are at your alarm panel at some other point in the house then, yes, you would send dial tone just on the red/green(or any pair) back to the alarm panel and connect that pair to all the other pairs feeding your phones/jacks. Your original message alluded to "daisy chaining". This is the way electricians like to run phone wire because thats standard in electical wiring(i.g. outlet to outlet) but that's a big no-no when it comes to phone wiring which should always be "home-runned" from jack back to main phone panel and for great reasons. By the way, is all this because of DSL issues as DavidandKasie alluded to?

Maureen, Exactly, it was a pinterest question, that's what I meant by is it "stalker'ish". Kippy, We don't use facebook, not me or my kids (who are much younger). Little, These are Christmas gifts. We don't have a huge family, and that is about what we now spend on those we are close to, in some cases nieces and nephews too. Girlfriends I would spend less on usually. Cyn, I think cost can be awkward with peers (though not always, depends on personality) but I find younger relatives are only too happy to hit us up. : ) Oh BBSTX, you are too funny! How did you know about my penchant for rococo clocks!? But you get a C- in reading comprehension. The post is only about the Pinterest angle. Oh and I love your daughter's idea. Weddings are fun, but what do they have to do with marriage? To me, marriage should be pretty serious and private. Happy, yes, but not a wild party. My 2 cents. PS A purchase has been made and sent. It was not Coach, because one of my DD recalled something else that she had mentioned. My to do list is shrinking, YAY!

Happy birthday! So glad you had people and food to make it special with! Plus a birthday date with a yummy lunch and a fun shopping trip is always a great thing.. Love your sparkly pretty! Amethyst is a favourite of mine as well! I pretty much call it my birthday month! You can borrow the idea if you wish ;-).

While I agree, it's the thought that counts, I have to wonder just how much thought this BM put into her 'gift'.

Just a couple months ago when SS called to spend the evening/night with his mother she blew him off with 'she was busy'. Might be hard on the SS when he goes to actually use coupon #3 and he gets 'sorry, I'm busy' and 'oh, not this week'. How many times will she disappoint the SS before he really gets to spend his coupons?

Blah... People never cease to amaze me. I gave coupons to my hubby for v-day and now it's a game DD likes to play, she sticks 'coupons' in my purse or on my winshield. Lol she is 9!! She loves the coupon game!

I think she is clueless... Nothing to do with broke unless that is her story... But a nice card without the coupons would have been the better 'thought that counts' gift...

Lol!!! Is it different than my mom sending my brother underwear and white undershirts for christmas!? Lol my sister in law almost DIED!! I love my mom but she can be clueless - that is for sure!! My sister got panties this yr... And my mom said 'what!?!' she asked me to take her shopping for some and so I thought I would just wrap them. Lol!!

Thanks ladies, for reassuring me that I'm not the nutty one here! LOL.

BM is not broke, just cheap -- she is an executive with a six figure salary. And, I agree, that the coupon thing is a great idea if used in an age appropriate way. The movie and pizza with friends would have been a great idea. Unfortunately, BM relates to SS as his friend, not as his mother. She would include herself in that pizza and movie party, which would be embarrassing for SS.

I read it as her way of being creative when she doesnt have any $ to buy gifts. Problem is, its sort of weird coming from the parent. I remember giving my father "gift certificates" from me that entitled him to me washing his car, mowing the lawn, etc.

Those "certificates" should be expected anyway. She's adding a value to something that should be the norm, which isnt the right message to her child.

"And has she forgotten that he's 16?" Doesn't that seem to so often be one of the common denominators with some of these women? BM did get SS one present this year - a toy that is suitable for ages three and up. SS is eight. It's just completely inappropriate for him and, as usual, will sit collecting dust until the next "donate your old toys" cleanup in SS's room.

LadyQ, I don't think it's you. There are a lot of fun things you can give a teenager that don't cost much money - a DVD, bag of microwave popcorn and some candy for a "movie night", for example. Or a trip to the museum, or an art gallery, or a driving trip to an away game for one of his high school teams; whatever he is interested in. But a coupon for a "hug"? Yup, that's something that children give their parents, not vice versa.

It seems like these coupons are more for her than him. She is hoping that he will hug her or want to spend time with her. LOL

haha, I like how it says "this entitles you to ASK ME"... not that he'll even get what he's asking for.

Why didn't I think of doing this for MY kids???
