knobs or pulls on cabinets - function vs. look
Comments (21)Ours is a working kitchen, so looks are important but function is more important. Think eye-hand coordination--what does it feel like to reach for the knob/pull and how difficult is it to aim and land on the item without thinking very much? [for me this rules out the catches that are little locks] How far does the finger area stand proud of the cabinet? [1 inch is probably insufficient.] Can it be used with other parts of the hand or are the fingertips essential to using it? Is a grip required? [hard for arthritic fingers] Will it push the fingers and hand back onto the cabinet or is there sufficient clearance so cab is not touched? Would a ring on a finger scrape the cab? If someone uses it with a glob of egg yolk or frosting on the fingers and this dries on the knob/pull, how hard will it be to clean it? [Extra points for knobs that are flat at back that can be opened with the side of a hand if fingers are messy (see posting above) or can be opened with fingers in V pattern.] Does your body need to be directly in front of knob/pull or can you pull strategically from the side? [This is a problem with many bin pulls and is reason I have decided against them. I hope that I can hook a finger into one of two hoop pulls and guide a drawer open even when standing caddywompus to drawer.] Knowing that I used to wash a 3-4 inch circle around the small ceramic knobs on my old cabs in order to remove the accumulating grime, I am hoping to keep my cabs cleaner by using open 5 inch pulls that rise 1.25 out from the cab. Wonder if it will work. Out of nostalgia, just want to post one of the pulls I once lusted after:...See Moreyour linen closet ideas for better function? - pics posted
Comments (6)Very similar narrow & deep shelves in my 1942 bathroom. I recently wrote a post about fixing up my bathroom & you can see some pics there. Link below. I didn't go into detail about the shelf re-build in the blog entry, but you can see what it looks like. Because of the depth, you can see in the pics I have baskets on the shelves. In the baskets I have stored: Top: extra stored bathroom items (extra Q-tips, sunblock, razors, etc...the extras to use when I run out), the Dr. Bag, few bathroom odds & ends I need every once on a while. Middle: My everyday go-to hair supplies: blow dryer, flat iron, brushes, hair products, etc. Bottom: Daughter's bathroom supplies: hair stuff, her toothbrushes, getting ready in the morning essentials...she's 4...she wants beauty stuff like Mommy on her own shelf. Here's my secret: The baskets are fairly large, but they only go halfway to the back because shelf is deep. Behind the baskets are the uglies: extra towels rolled up, makeup, heating pad, etc. You can't see the uglies unless you pull out the baskets. And the best part...because the baskets are big, I have plenty of room to store everyday items. The shelves are always clean & look that way all the time. If I need an emergency company cleanup & have something on the sink I need to hide ASAP, I just throw in one of the baskets. Not sure if that's helpful to you, but that's how I do the deep shelves. Comments (9)Yes, I know the post was really detailed. I waffled about whether to put that much detail in it, but felt like I'd covered the basic ideas/options myself but kept running into obstacles that I tried to outline in the post so folks maybe would understand the problems with most of the options I thought of. It was not my intent to make anyone's head explode. Thanks to all of you for your ideas, however. I do appreciate it. Igloochic, I hadn't really thought of hanging glass...that's an interesting option. I do like the Asian look of shoji which might work, maybe in a shutter? Marti8a, I love that pic...they were my first choice, but don't know if I can get a 9' span. Think I will have to visit a decor store that sells shades and see what they say. Thanks, again...See MoreTsdiver's Layout (pic)
Comments (8)The distance on paper was 3'10" between the refrigerator wall and the island. This is a through walkway to an outside patio area. The distance between the island and the sink wall was 3'6". I say was because that is what was on paper. Next time I am at the house I will measure it out and see what we "actually" have. I used the measuring function a lot from cabinet to cabinet on the software programs, but I did not take into consideration the small counter top overhang. I'm thrilled that my plan is helping you! The nice part about the software is the ability to save, swap, re-save, try something different, save the different, open the original, and try something new again. And the 3D... well, it is the best part! I'm not very good at visualizing, so the 3D ability really proved to be an invaluable resource! Oh... and on my plan above, each square of graph paper is one foot....See Morecoffeebreak
