I had my last surgery...I hope it is my last!!

They say it is..trying to believe it!

I hope to be home in a few weeks. I haven't seen my house in so long! Just to pop in and grap some stuff here and there. I was able to get online tonight and see your new exchange

tonight. I wanted so bad to do that one! My son packed up all my stuff months ago, to make room for my hospital bed...then I ended up at his house anyway!.. so when I finally get home.. I will have to unpack my work room..AGGHh!

I wanted to do the new exchange so bad! I had so much stuff to share.....just didn't have access to any of it! I love seeing what you all got!

This forum is so cool! I love watching as I recover.

You all keep me going! The pain pills die out in the middle of the night, and I always find myself here...

I save all your beautiful works.....your are all such an inspiration to me! I can't wait to have my life back!

I may actually be able to retire now...so mosaics may

be my life! so excited! I did all kinds of stuff..sew..

pottery......etc....because of all of you...I JUST WANT TO MOSAIC AGAIN!!!

Gibby, I come from an alcoholic home, too, and don't drink for the same reason. As you said, I think any addiction can be substituted for another. Kelly, as I said in another thread, deprivation never tends to work for me. The last thing we need is more guilt, and I think the idea of a "detox" is sort of like seeing our bodies and our eating habits as dirty and shameful. I know some people do it w/o that connotation, but it's good to see if this is part of why you want to do it. If so, you may want to reconsider. As for craving vegetables vs. sugar . . .again, using my "look deeper" attitude, think about what you are craving when you want sugar. First of all, remember that most of us DO crave sugar. That is not abnormal. But, is there more? Do you crave energy? Do you feel like you are "treating" yourself when you want the sugar? Again, most of us do like the taste of sugar-- it's programmed into us. Breastmilk is sweet for that reason! I have mentioned that I like the ADDITIVE attitude. So, if you want to eat more fruits and vegetables, go for it! One of the things I learned about myself was that I do like veggies . . .a LOT, but only if they are prepared (vs. just boiled/steamed). For example, I could easily live on veggies the way they are prepared in Ethiopian cuisine. My friend just made a salad with grilled veggies and pesto. I craved it because it was GOOD. Bottom line-- I don't think juicing will cure you of cravings. But, if you want to add more fruits/vegs. into your diet, maybe try preparing them in more interesting ways, as well as juicing, but maybe don't limit yourself to only a juice diet until you have your expectations clearly laid out. (Not saying you don't already.)

DH just had 12 (benign) polyps removed during a colonoscopy. Better get him on the black tea! I just wanted to report that I have lost 6.4 lbs. in the past 6-8 weeks, which for me is such a rare accomplishment that if I didn't just have a physical a couple of weeks ago, I'd assume that I was gravely ill. I made a pact with myself (I think I mentioned this here) that I would lose 10 lbs. before I turn 50. Well tomorrow is my 49th birthday, so I'm well on my way, assuming I can sustain this loss and continue. I have gained 10 lbs. in 10 years and I'm determined to change that trend. All I've done, and it's been painless really, is stop eating anything that has more than 3 g of sugar -- with a few exceptions, like an occasional yogurt. Oh, and I still have a few beers each weekend but that's really it. Also, I don't eat anything after dinner, except for maybe a couple times a week I'll crave something and I'll have a small square of good dark chocolate (which actually tastes very sweet to me now!). So yesterday I went to the jeans store, wanting to buy more of the same "uniform" jeans I have been wearing for years. Not necessarily in a smaller size, though my jeans are loose, just a fresh new pair. The salesperson convinced me that I was wearing my jeans too big and that I should try the smaller size. I said, oh, I don't think so, I haven't worn a 10 in jeans forever. In a nice way, she forced the size 10 on me, and in a different style than what I usually wear -- I wear the "Easy Rider" Lucky jeans because they're cut fuller in the hips. Well, the size 10 fit perfectly. Actually, at first I said I thought they were a bit snug and she said she actually thought they seemed a bit BIG (and then made me try the size 8, which was far too small). Anyway, I ended up trying on a bunch of different sizes but NONE in the size 12 that I've been wearing for probably 5+ years. When I put my old "loose" jeans on I could then see how unflattering they were. I was so full of confidence after buying my new jeans, I tried on about 100 pairs of pants in other stores in the mall, but didn't have one bit of luck. I must be the only woman in America with saddlebags. Anyway -- that was a great way to keep me motivated, and also educational! I never "use" salespeople in stores because I think I know everything. Maybe I should get help more often!

Thanks for the kind thoughts all. Though I still have a couple of issues (have to watch out for lung illnesses for a few years etc) I've been really lucky. I know of others who have spent months in nursing homes because they couldn't fix their leaks. Scary stuff...I thought that stuff only happened to the '"really fat" people (eyes rolling). I learned some great life lessons about not being invincible :) FYI I did not have a bypass. Those require that you take vitamins for the rest of your life as you can not get enough healthy food in. THey have major malabsorption issues to deal with, etc. They are typically recommended for grossly obese people. The procedure I had is a new procedure that is pretty much replacing the lap band, which has turned out to be a bit of a failure long term as it requires too much maintenance and causes significant scaring long term which damages the stomach permanently. My procedure removes the stretchy part of your stomach, leaving a banana shaped muscle which functions as it always has, only can not stretch much. Lifelong you have no significant changes in how your body functions so it's healthier, safer, etc...unless you have all of the complications I had...then it's not so much :( I would recommend the procedure to anyone who had comorbidities to deal with. High BP, sleep apnea, etc, which can be life threatening, not to mention diabetes. The rates people go off of medication with this surgery is amazing. I however had it more for cosmetic reasons...that I don't recommend...the risks and rewards don't pan out. ....and yes it's now seen as the easy way out. It's not actually easy, even for those who don't have complications. You still have to have self control, watch your diet, obey the rules, etc., but you really can't "cheat" until quite far out. 80% of people are successful long term...but some do gain back some of their weight. Very few ever gain it all back because you really have to work to make that happen. Success rates with dieting alone are rather abysmal...don't get me wrong, I wish I'd not have done this, but those are the facts, so it's just fair to share them.

Late to the check-in. Every few years I seem to have gained a "few" pounds and then have an epiphany and get back on track to lose it. This time around I had my epiphany in December instead of January and got started one week when DH was out of town - easier to cut back on eating when he isn't here. I increased exercise, cut back on food and lost about four pounds. I thought it would be a struggle to maintain this through a couple holiday feeding frenzy events but forged ahead anyway. I think I might have done okay - maintained without losing more - but for falling on my knee the Saturday before Christmas on my way to one of the feeding frenzies. I really bruised the underside of my patella and couldn't do anything requiring bending my knee with pressure or weight on it. Since I only have one real leg (and one prosthetic leg) this precluded any of the exercise I usually do. I could barely go up and down the stairs in the house, get up from the floor, etc. I had one more weekend food fest in early January but I'm finally back on track and re-lost the four lbs again. I let the knee heal for four weeks so this weekend is my first time back to exercise and it's great. I thought I didn't like exercise but I really missed it and was very happy to get back to it this weekend so I guess I like it more than I thought. Now my latest healthy improvement is to cut back on sugar free soda which I love. I drink water only at work but all bets are off after that. I really don't like water except for Dasani so I'm substituting that for soda. I think it's ridiculous to buy water but I like the taste of that brand and we have a whole house water softener so I don't really like drinking large volumes of that water with extra sodium. It tastes fine but since I'm prone to HBP I think it best not to consume a lot of it.

total addiction too! I have planned out my new work room...
while waiting to go home..and glass and tile and my tools is all that's going back in! I just want to play with all of you!

Love hopped over here this am to see if you had posted. Been thinking of you the last few days. Was going to post but thot I'd check here first. Saw your latest. I do hope ythis last surgery is the last for you for a while. I think I know the yearning you feel for you own space and being able to get you hands into the creating again. I think it is harder esp. when you are feeling better. Hope you get back to you home soon love.

Same feelings as KAT just posted. I know how I feel just spending a weekend in Dallas w/DD - can't wait to get back home. I also know how frustrating it is for you. Now that I'm back home, I STILL can't move very fast, and it's driving me OUTTA SORTS, for SURE. I'm w/you, LOVE.

Hello again..
The surgery drama never ends, it seems. The car accident
has consumed my life, and I've had 2 more surgeries since I checked in last. Going home seems like a dream right now.

The guilty party's insurance ran out 2 surgeries ago, so I have that deal with too! Still can't walk...but my arms work again, so I shouldn't really complain..right??
I was pretty smashed up... Broken arms, legs and a hip.
The hip and leg just won't heal right. I'm only 48! they
really thought I'd do better.I never imagined I'd be at my son's so long. I know his girl friend is just going nuts!
I don't blame her......there are nurses coming in, and their life is so disrupted. I just want to go back home.
I have a hospital bed there....in my workroom...but I need help with everything again...and can't afford 24/7 nursing care. Being dependant on your kids is the worst! I never thought I'd be there!...hoped I'd die before that happened.
I'm 48! I thought I'd be 88 before I needed that kind of help!
My daughter lives several miles away..and comes on
weekends, and brings my granddaughter...the light of my life! I live for the weekends right now. I have to say I'm glad my computer crashed trying to post to this site..
if it didn't, I wouldn't have gotten my lap top, and I would've gone freaking crazy sitting here! They say things happen for a reason, the lap top was all I can get from this crap! I met all of you! So far nothing else good has
come from this! You are are all so wonderful. I did get to see a few projects tonight, and hope to comment on them.
My meds always wear off about now...so sleepless nights
are my life. I hope my comments are not too out there,
sometimes I wonder if I was too outspoken when I comment.

OHMYGOODNESS, LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so sorry for you. Moving you up in priorities on my prayer list. Bless you, dear. This must be soooooooo frustrating. Wish I lived closer to you - I'd help you mosaic. I know how mosaicing is therapy for some of us. It's a reason to get up in the morning for me some days when I'm down in the dumps. So, try to focus on your art, cuz you're very talented, and that'll help occupy your mind. Reading your post is gonna keep my mouth from complaining about my minor break. Good grief!!! Makes me ashamed for feeling impatient. BREAK SOMETHING today and GLUE IT DOWN on something.

Slowmedown, I sure hope you are healed by now. It's so hard
not being yourself. I see that you have been busy. So glad to see it. I hope to be home by the end of the month. Therapy has gone really well this time, I may be hobbling,
but I'm darn glad to be!LOl! I plan to rework my workroom as
soon as I get home. My son packed it all up months ago, so it should be easy to just bring back in my glass stuff. I have so many Christmas idea's, I can't wait to get started on!
