Obituary Drama
I know I shouldn't be surprised, but I just learned today that SM has taken it upon herself to write and publish the longer, more thought-out obituary for my Dad's boyhood hometown paper after we'd discussed trying to do it together. Since my Dad died, I've tried contacting her & otherwise reaching out to her three times, and she has yet to reciprocate. Which, again, isn't surprising, but I figured partly it's because of her grieving process (after all, she so clearly informed me within hours of his death: "I grieve better alone" ---aka "scram") that she's been MIA. I was waiting to hear from her regarding this obit and have heard nothing.
So I found it online today while looking again at his original one that we co-wrote, with the undertaker, for the local paper where he actually resided, the day after he died. In this new one, the second sentence after the one stating his name and that he died of cancer is: "He was the husband of [SM's name]." THEN it goes on to describe a bit about HIM, but of course only after mentioning what she felt was even more important: HER. As expected, I am a mere afterthought in it, way down at the very bottom, and even though I am an only child (rendering my place in his life at least *somewhat* unique), I am clustered together with his nieces, nephews and "godchildren" (really HER "godchildren"). She even has to muscle her way into the forefront of that little paragraph: "In addition to his wife, he leaves behind a daughter, several nieces, nephews and godchildren." I'm "a" daughter, not "his daughter" or even ---heaven forbid!--- his loving daughter or beloved daughter or only daughter... just "a daughter", lumped in with a bunch of nieces and nephews he hardly ever saw. It's not that I think my Dad's obit has to be "about me" or that I even mind being that I'm only a brief mention after the description of his life. But it's that SM has to mention HERSELF FIRST, even before any discussion of HIM!
And this is in the paper for the town he grew up in and left long before he ever met her, the town he hardly visited after he met her because apparently she & some of the relatives didn't mix. This is a place that has nothing to do with her, and the obit will be read by people who probably didn't even like her.
The whole thing kinda burns me up. And I realize I am being somewhat picky and thin-skinned, and admittedly I'd probably find fault with anything she wrote... namely for the fact that she, as with so many other things, excluded me from any say (and practically any presence) in this important thing pertaining to my Dad's life. But I am far from satisfied with how it reads. I want to write another one, and publish it, but I obviously don't want to be (or look) tacky about it. Since he died 11/23 (almost 6 weeks ago) I am concerned that it might be "too late". What do you all think? Also, do you think it's better to find a different local paper to put mine in? (I'm thinking yes, it is). I don't want to say anything nasty or have it come off like it's merely a miffed reaction to hers, but I'm feeling this need to have some amount of voice in describing my Dad's life. I just want to go about it in a dignified manner. Any advice?
