Changing countertop without changing out cabinets?

I am somewhat concerned about getting new countertops--leaning toward a quartz solid surface--without changing out my cabinets. I've had new appliances picked out for some time, now, eventually I'll have a new microwave (current one needs repair), slide-in range with induction cooktop, and a counter-depth refrigerator.

The countertop is laminate, and showing its age, and the sink and faucet are patiently waiting to be replaced as well.

Anyway, my cabinets are basic, builder-grade cabinets, and other than being a little blah, there's nothing wrong with them. My hesitation lies in putting the money for a great countertop on top of "blah".

A realtor friend talked me out of painting them so that's not really an option. Leave them alone? Just add hardware? Reface? Thanks for any input!
