Give me honest answer

How does everyone feel about adult sk being in their homw when they are away? this is a sk that has done some dishonest things - like take things from the home and not return them. let me know how others feel. this sk has his own home and job.

SD stayed in our home when we were away. She also takes our things, especially mine. I don't think she steals per se but rather has no boundaries and no concept of privacy.

I hide things when she visits and directly confront her when I know she touched my stuff, it helps somewhat.

Anyone who's a known "borrower", doesn't get to stay in my house unsupervised, whatever their relationship. I would not let my own child stay under those circumstances.

It is interesting that Marian's behavior is seen as utterly reprehensible but there is seen to be nothing to apologize for in the harsh treatment and effective shunning that was meted out as punishment to her! It's funny - her periodic outbursts never bothered me, even when I triggered one (my quip on the Christian Stoner House name for example...) There was always something specific that triggered her reaction but, because of my own tendency to blow up, I always assumed that they were opportunities for her to vent other frustrations. A gentle 'hey, hey, calm down' or just ignoring it entirely might be a more effective route. While what she said at those times might have been in a vein that is alien to me (e.g. the religious references), it didn't ever make me want to cut her off from a place she clearly valued as a social outlet and a place where she could participate in a wider world that her rural mountain home. There was a lot of negativity and narrow mindedness exhibited by others as well during that incident that bothers me much more than Marian's because it was deliberate and prolonged long after one should have got over any explosion of irritation over the initial trigger point. I certainly remember Marian apologizing . I've lost the trust I had in the good faith of the Idylls and that is sad. I think the Idylls lost a lot when they lost Marian because it showed that some at least, are not open to dealing with people with different values, different ways of dealing with things - even when that person shares a common interest (gardens) and values the group. Cranky, temperamental outbursts happen all around us - heaven help us if we can't deal with them politely and move on! A lot of that description applies to me as well - I'm as different, cranky and temperamental as they come! I valued the Idylls as a social outlet to talk to people from a wide variety of places and backgrounds and attitudes, all with a common interest in my passion - gardening. Marian feels the same. When the Idylls shunned Marian, they shunned me too, whether they intended to or not! And that hurt. There's not a great deal of difference between me and Marian, regardless of superficial differences of age, geographic location and religious beliefs (or not...) I have stayed in regular contact with Marian and feel very comfortable with her. If my life had taken a different path when I was young, I could very well have turned out much like her. So, in some ways, she's an alter-ego for me. So I'm not sure where all this is going for me. I miss the Idylls but am not sure that I could participate fully again because I'd always be afraid that I could end up with the same treatment as Marian got - is getting... - and that would be very painful. So I remain ambivalent. I stayed mostly silent in the first round of this down-on -Marian and that shamed me because I did not feel that it was right and I should have said so! I fully intend to age (in the unlikely event that I reach Marian's age) into a cranky, opinionated so-and-so :-) Some would say I've already reached that point! So, yes Marian over-reacted way back when as an expression of the hurt she felt but she did apologize. I'm not sure why people don't think it was sincere. But there was a lot of other over-reacting going on too that was and is hurtful - to Marian, to me - and to all of you since it is a betrayal of your own better natures. What a shame that this group is so thrown off stride by the temperamental and different. Please remember your compassion....

Not to quibble but you likely purchased "digital ready" televisions, which is to say they are capable of receiving digital over the air transmissions without the need for an additional converter box. Televisions are High Definition or not. What few were saying is that "digital ready" means nothing for customers using cable, satellite, or telephone company service. Those providers use either analog, digital, or some combination of both (generally cable). In the case of all digital transmissions, the provider supplies a converter box and generally one is needed for each television at an additional fee (something that the providers often neglect to mention). In your case, I'd suspect that the cable company was providing some analog or digital stations that the tuner in your TV was capable of receiving. The cable company has now migrated it service to all digital and encrypted the channels so that you need to buy (rent) one of their boxes for each TV you want to view. Unfortunately you have two options, pay the bill or put up an antenna.

The truth is that most cable companies including comcast are moving away from analog and clear QAM signals. So even if your TV has ATSC tuner there are few or no unencrypted channels available. You will need a box to "decode" the encrypted digital signal. In my local area comcast offers a "free" (for 3 tv's) tuner that outputs a wretched analog via channel three signal over coax signal. Think back to VHS quality days. For about $10 - $15 per box per month you can get a HD box that outputs a variety of digital and HD signals. The only other option is called Cable Card, a cable card is a small card that allows the decryption of the cable co's signal. Few if any TV's now have cable card slots (unfortunate!). There are cable card devices out there and your cable co is required by law to support them. Some examples of cable card tuners are Tivo Premiere, Moxi DVR, Computer based cable card tuners (Silicon Dust, Ceton, and ATI). This option allows you to own the tuner and rent for small fee the cable card. The cable co. wants you to have a box on every tv, it gives them control and allows them to up-charge for HDTV. There are a few options for "sharing" boxes between tv's but none that are compelling nor do they work well. Some of the sat companies boxes are designed to be shared to multiple tv's.

In my three years there we never once felt the need for A/C. It will take a long, long time to recoup the $9200 difference in equipment costs - particularly with low cost electricity. If you are currently not using any A/C, there will be no savings cost on A/C - and indeed if you do start to cool there will be an INCREASE. If you are paying peanuts for electricity to heat, then reducing peanuts to smaller peanuts by spending and extra $9200 will take a long time. Unless global warming has taken a toll, I'd stick with what the majority does in your area. I can't believe that a mainstream approach will hurt property values. I agree with Colleen. I once came home & my son that didn't live there was inside watching TV... fine, except he brought friends over that I didn't know. I don't like having strangers in my house so that was a boundary violation for me. If any of the kids... mine or not, were borrowers~ they can only be there when we are home. If they don't respect your home & things, they don't need to be there unsupervised.

Why would there be a reason for the sk to be in your home when there is no one else there?

In my case my ss rummaged through my room and my jewlery was found in his possesion.

Speaking for myself, after my experience I would never allow that to happen again.

In our case SD had to stay in our area while we were gone. BM lives in our area as well, in fact in a walking distance nd logically SD would stay with her, but.... But both SDs refuse to stay at moms (BM and her BF are heavy drinkers, their house is very filthy, and appliances usually do not work or don't work well, BM starts fights etc), so it was either hotel or our house. SO can't say "no" to his kids...

thanks for all the honest responses. wishitwaseasy the reason ss wants to stay in our home is to bring a friend and play with our things such as boat, rtv, dirt bike, snowmobile etc. then wants to come in and use our facility like bar, kitchen, bathroom and whatever he wants. dh cannot say no and thinks it is fine.

There are very few people whom I would happily allow to stay in my home while we were not here. Most importantly they do not snoop and they respect others' privacy; if they did stumble across something personal (they were bleeding profusely and started rummaging through bathroom drawers to find a bandage), they would never mention what they had seen. They treat our possessions and home as if it were theirs - they clean up and take reasonable care if using something of ours. If something were to accidentally be damaged, they'd offer to pay to replace it, be it a boat or a fork that they accidentally stuck in the garbage disposal. We'd probably say no, of course, certainly to the fork, and certainly if were something really expensive that insurance would cover - but they'd have made the offer.

Someone who "borrowed" something and never returned it? Honestly, I'd be unhappy about such a person spending the night here even if I were home! I'd have everything that was meaningful and valuable to me (heirlooms and such, regardless of actual cost) put completely away somewhere. As for someone who "borrows" staying when we weren't here, it would get seriously ugly if DH were agreeing with that.

The toughest call, I think, is if one has an honest but ditzy relative who really wanted to stay - if the relative could be trusted but their friends, not necessarily so. It would be really awkward to say that you don't trust someone's friends - but I'd feel awkward before I'd allow my stuff to disappear!

Not only no but hell, no. SD used our home for sexual rendevous, not to mention stealing things from us and causing property damage. No way I'd let her stay there unsupervised.
