HELLO,
I WAS SO EXCITED TO FIND THIS FORUM BUT I NOTICED THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY ENTRIES SINCE THE END OF 2001. I JUST READ ABOUT THIS DIET IN THE LATEST ISSUE OF FIRST MAGAZINE SO I FIGURE THERE WILL BE A NEW INTEREST. I WENT THRU THE CHECKLISTS AND MARKED ALL OF THE ROUND TYPE SECTION SO I KNOW I AM A NO. 1 - GRAINS 3 TIMES A DAY WITH THE USUAL 2 OZ. OF PROTEIN (PREFERABLY FISH). CAN ANYONE GIVE ME ANY OTHER DETAILS THAN THIS. I AM WAITING FOR THE BOOK TO COME IN AT THE LIBRARY BUT THAT COULD TAKE UP TO A MONTH. PLEASE SHARE - I KNOW THERE ARE NOT TO BE ANY DIET PRODUCTS BUT WHAT ELSE CAN I HAVE BESIDES 1/2 C.GRAIN(3X), 2 OZ. OF PROTEIN(6X), 1/2 C. OF FRUIT(3X) AND UNLIMITED VEGGIES. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE SOME RECIPES FOR THIS LEVEL TOO. I STARTED 2 DAYS AFTER EASTER AND HAVE LOST OVER 7 LBS. IN 3 DAYS!THANKS AND I HOPE I HEAR BACK. MY E-MAIL IS redwoodempress@aol.com thanks!!! Sharon

Happy belated Thanksgiving- well, I have been trying to keep up with the posts and AnnieB, your results are great! Good for you!!! I read my original post and I made an error, at 3 weeks I had lost 15 pounds. Well, I got off the plan due to a trip to Paris (no way I am giving up wine, cheese and chocolate when I am in the good food capital). But I am back on the palan and it feels great to see the scale moving again. 18 down and only 30 more pounds to go. We are snowed in here and I am fighting the urge to eat warm, comfort foods! So I am off to make some tuna! If anyone has some good recipes, I would love to see them! Thanks!

Nancy, This is my 2nd week on the program. There are some recipes posted in the messages boards. Another place that has recipes is: http://www.jonsplace.org/rec/rec0.htm. Restrictive? Yes and no. In general, you're cutting salt, sugar and dairy. Forget about sodas. They have alot of sodium and are not allowed. Besides, the plan calls for drinking 100 oz of water everyday so there won't be room for them. Depending on your plan there may be a few more things that you have to cut. On the other hand there are alot of things you can eat. You'll probably discover alot of foods you like and never tried before. Cutting the salt is hard. At first you really miss it and everything does taste bland, but you get used to it and then actually feel better. Cutting the salt out also helps with things like high blood pressure, etc. You will NOT need an appetite supressant. This I can pretty much guarantee. Most people find that this is alot of food. You're eating every 2-3 hours and protein is a part of almost every meal in 2 oz portions. You'll probably always be full and even start dreading meals because you're so full until your metabolism adjusts. That's really the whole point of the program -- to speed up your metabolism. Overall, this is a healthy way to eat. You're cutting out things that we already know are unhealthy and make us fat and starting to eat balanced, well portioned meals. The water intake alone has made this worth it for me. Before this, I drank at least 6 Mountain Dews a day and not even the diet variety. I also now actually eat rather than starving myself in the hopes of cutting calories. And I'm eating more fruits and vegetable on a daily basis than I ever have before. I get to sleep easier and more soundly probably because of all the caffeine I'm not drinking. I don't miss the caffeine at all, the carbs and protein keep me going all day long. Most people are very successful with this program but it does take disciple and really wanting it work. If you follow it, you will loose weight and be healthier too. Sofia

Michael De Luca on light placement

"the edge of the beam intersects the junction" Generally, there is no 'edge of the beam.' The light from most bulbs is brightest in the middle of the beam and gets less bright as you go out from the center. The gradient is narrower for spot lights and wider for floods. The 'beam angle' tells you the approximate angle at which the light is half as bright as it is in the center of the beam. I haven't read DeLuca's book. He is right that placing the lights closer in is likely to place scallops of intense light on the upper cabinets. That can look odd if the placement of lights has no relationship to the placement of cabinets and thus appears random, but it can be done thoughtfully and look fine. If you don't like the scallops at all and prefer to place lights further out, then you're going to get the shadows. Oh, and yes, you would want to get good UC lighting if you want the counters well-lit. Even with them you'd never eliminate those shadows, but you could make them much less noticeable. If you were to move the cans toward the cabs and use them for task lighting, I think you'll find that 50W par20 bulbs are a little underpowered for 9' ceilings. Even if you spaced them 32" apart, you'd only have about 40 footcandles on the front of the counters, which may be enough if your eyes are good. Stepping up to par30 bulbs could give just as much light with the same amount of electricity and fewer fixtures, or more light with a similar number of fixtures. It's worth mentioning that you have to think about your own needs to make sense of the options; formulas can help you attain a particular light-level target, but you really ought to be sure that the target the formula aims for is appropriate for you and your lifestyle. If your counters are primarily used for opening takeout food, task lighting may not be very important. If you do a lot of chopping and mixing and reading of recipes then you may want much better than average lighting.

Cleaning house this week. Not that anyone could tell but I have been... Single people should not be allowed larger homes. It rained this morning so I'm safe from having to mow the lawn. Just got back from the grocery store. Bread, bacon, chip dip, and some tenderloin. Going to a nascar party tomorrow so I need to make some sort of junk food for the guys. I have some leftover lamburger and venison so I might have to make some chili. I know diddly about nascar other then they are loud and drive in circles. Mostly PO'ed with my job. New boss does not like "college boys", informs me that I'm over paid, and spouts his lust for the old days when he could just fire people for no reason. One of us is going to change or someone won't have a job for long... and I ain't about to change. Ack... so anyways I have half a case of beer left from last weekend, a dirty house, and two cats that love me. Off to check out my garden and see what is left... probably some tomatos for that chili. : ) michael

Hi, everyone. I just purchased the program on ebay and it came yesterday. I am acclimating to how to live, because I am really determined to make this work. I already see that I am going to have difficulty with the very stringent rules on fat. I am used to the low-sodium because I was on the Rice Diet for several months years ago, but I really am worried about not being able to use low-cal salad dressing and a bit of fat to make things cook and be a bit tasty. I am trying to balance the good the diet will do against the fear of failure due to boring food. I just don't want to fail yet again! Cooking is a hobby, so I will have to adjust my thinking firmly on that. I am wondering if any of you on the program have gone "off the page" a bit, and if so, how it affected your progress. P.S. I found wonderful salt-free spice blends at www.penzeys.com. Check it out. I am also purchasing two cookbooks--one from the Heart Association and another for diabetics. Both indicated stringent low-fat, low-sugar, low-sodium, so I hope I can adapt the recipes. It looks like the key to this is PREPAREDNESS, and figuring out how to make it palatable. I am so interested in all your stories. Best wishes to all, Alyson
