LOOKING for: where'd alba go?!

Back in the day, when I could drink something filling in place of a meal, I happened upon ALBA, a 70-calorie, high protein drink mix, cheap compared to Slim-Fast. It would fit right in with my Simply Weight Loss plan, but I can't find it! DD found some at Wal-mart and gave it to me for Christmas several years ago, but doesn't remember seeing it since. She said it was in the same area as Carnation Instant Breakfast. Has anyone seen my ALBA? chery-va

I just recently saw Alba at Safeway. As I recall it was not where the chocolate mixes were maybe by the diet foods but not sure. I used to buy Alba as a nonsugar chocolate mix, I didn't associate it with high protein and I thought it only had 50 calories but that had to be 40 years ago. Check out the low-carb mixes, they tend to be low calorie, low fat, high protein and I think cheap compared to slimfast. Of course, you have to supply yourown water. I like to mix it into yogurt; or into water with orange flavored metamucil when I think I should have more fiber. It was surprisingly good, well, not like a milk shake but better than I expected and hunger stays gone for hours. Good luck finding the Alba.

I realize the original post is really old, but maybe it will help someone anyhow. Alba shake mix can be purchased direct online at albadrinks.com I can find Vanilla and Double Chocolate at Wegmans (I live in PA).

This is that time of year I make garden edit changes in my head since I can see what I've done wrong in such embarrassingly high relief. I tend to wander about in confused circles without aim doing this and that and end up all over the place doing some unrelated & some very unfocused waste of time things I'd just as soon not mention since I cannot jump in and start digging those things out right now like I want to do. Of course its hotter than hades so I keep coming inside to wash my face in cold water and clean my glasses from sweat so I can see. The guilt is that I know I am out there mostly piddling and there's all that work sitting undone on my desk but it does no good. Then I see a pristine tiger swallowtail butterfly and must get the camera so I take pictures for a while wishing those hummingbirds would come. Today I suddenly decided to dig around the perimeter of some really nice blue switchgrass and got myself 3 new good sized rooted starts potted up which are sitting in the shade to replace that "awful thing" that is simply not working & which I keep staring at and trying to mentally fix until my head hurts. I had finally decided to order some switchgrass online this fall as a replacement. I'm just slow enough on the ball to only just today think of digging my own starts as a belated stroke of genius during my aimless wandering and piddling. Now I'm eyeballing that big clump of 3 'Northwind' switchgrasses & patting myself on the back for saving myself some money since I can replace that other "awful thing" with these in two nice groupings of three's. Problem solved.

Glenda, This is the real recipe from Carnival. The one posted above is just a copy cat recipe. There are loads of CC recipes around for cruise recipes.. but most of the lines put out cookbooks with the authentic recipes. I found it on the cruisecritic.com boards. It's in the Foodies forum. Someone posted that they had the orange sherbet soup recipe, but they never actually posted it. Glad you liked your cruise! Cruises are wonderful. We've taken 6, so far, and have 3 booked for this December. We hope to try Carnival some time. Anyway here is the reecipe for you. Enjoy! Strawberry Bisque 3 c strawberries, washed and hulled 1 Â½ c water Â¾ c sugar 3 T lemon juice 1 t grated lemon peel 1 Â½ c red wine 1 c. sour cream fresh mint leaves Directions: Combine strawberries, Â½ c water, and sugar in a blender. Cover and blend the mixture until pureed. Stir in lemon juice, peel, 1 c. water and wine. Stir in sour cream until blended. Chill for several hours before serving and garnish with mint. Silly

Maire Cate, I lied! It was The Kitchn, NOT the Test Kitchen recipe! I've used so many recipes for turkey from the Test Kitchen (am a subscriber to the site now and to Cooks Illustrated for years prior) that I automatically wrote test kitchen, sorry!! The recipe I used is linked below, it is both easier and tastier than the test kitchen methods I have used (brining, roasting on a bed of veggies, roasting for just a few hours, etc.) The Kitchn method is absolutely the easiest one I have ever used, and one of the best, if not the best. I had a fresh turkey of almost 15 pounds for ten meat eaters. It was rinsed inside and out, giblets and neck removed from cavity (the former in a bag, thankfully), and dried, then sprinkled all over with salt and coarse ground pepper. No stuffing was put in the turkey. The oven was preheated to 450. I poured two cups of Swanson's chicken broth in the bottom of a roasting pan with deep ridges on the bottom and set the turkey in breast up. I untied the legs per instructions. The bird went in the oven on the next to lowest rack setting and temp immediately turned down to 350 degrees. After an hour I basted it with the juices and tented the breast, which was already a beautiful golden brown. You are supposed to take the turkey out and close the oven door when basting, so I did that and basted it two more times about an hour apart. The turkey was ready after 16 min. per pound, I was timing it but there was also a pop up timer in the bird as well, and I used a meat thermometer to make sure it was done. I took the bird out and it rested for nearly an hour while the sides heated up and we had our first course. My SIL's husband (she is my brother's widow) carved and the meat--- every bit of it---- was moist and flavorful and delicious! Best of all, the pan drippings made fabulous gravy, which I made by combining unsalted butter and flour in a large, straight-sided skillet into a roux that I browned a bit instead of leaving white. I used it to thicken the pan juices (which already included broth) by adding the broth to the skillet. I had about three cups of broth/drippings, which contained rendered fat, so I made more roux than I would have for liquid without fats. After thickening the gravy I added about four ounces of half and half and two of those small containers of Knorr concentrated, home style chicken broth. They are about 2" x 1.5" and come in a four pack. This method has to be tweaked on site for the amount of fat in the drippings but makes absolutely delicious gravy. The meal WAS wildly successful, thank heavens, and we did not have a lot of turkey leftover as our young men (ages 13, 16, 22, and 25) ate like there was no tomorrow :-). But there will be enough leftovers for HK to make a turkey pie or two for the coming week, unless we eat it all in open faced sandwiches with that fabulous gravy before the day is out! So how did it turn out? We are building as well and I hated all the plans out there some more then others. They were either lacking, or had qualities that I have in our current home. If you are still trying to figure out the master set up I can sure send you what we chose for our set up. Then bathroom is smaller but doesn't lack in function, also we have our master in that same corner and we have a narrow window above where our bed will be way up high and went with narrow windows on each side of our bed. I also recommend that you go to a lot of open houses that have walls in the foyer when you walk in, look at different designs and layouts, see what you like and don't like. On paper vs visualizing in your head is so much more inadequate then actually looking at a home with super small bedrooms, or obscure walls. Your plan may work for you in your head but if you can actually walk into a home that the foyer is blocked with wall 5' in front of the entrance you may rethink where you put your stairs. I saw a few different options where you could sneak in the stairs with a little bit of tweaking to your floor plans. Also, we took a floor plan apart and it is part of 2 different plans plus my own tweaking. We went to our local small town home building lumber yard and they have ppl there that draw this stuff up for a living, I asked how much my plans were and they didn't charge me as our contract buys his inventory there. and find yourself a craftman contractor, one that is great at what he does, small time not a big company builder that turns out tons of houses in a yr. Ours does one per yr, he delivers quality, integrity and he doesn't bat an eye when you want to change things a bit on the interior. He built my in laws massive addition and I watched the man work, he was awesome! Find someone who will work with you look at your finished plans and tell you that wont work or maybe another way to look at it. Build your house the way you want to but first, go look at some open houses that are similar or have some of the same things you have in your plans. Best of luck! I feel your pain of finding the right plan, late nights, research, consumed by what you need and want. When your house plans feels right and you have come to where you are confident with them you will know it is right.

I saw it yesterday at Kroger. In the store by me, it is on a small "endcap" placed next to where the frozen dessert/ice cream isle starts. They are several reduced sugar dessert items with it.

Also found your post! I still had a couple of boxes of Alba-all 3 flavors, on my shelf-for a couple of YEARS ... there was a close-out @ Albertsons in Delray Bch Fl @ that time & I bought a whole bunch @ a very low price. (They may have restocked since then, I just haven't looked).

Well - I started dieting again & began using my 2 boxes I still had left ... wanted to share with you:
1. I learned about Alba when I was in Weight Watchers in Atlanta in the '90's - it was to be used as a milk exchange & if you added milk to it that took care of the 2 milks required for the day !!! Good deal
2. Just by happenstance when I was mixing my Alba with my malted-like mixer - 1 speed only - (I also add 1/3 c of dry milk) for 3 minutes (like making instant pudding) - it comes out like the consistency of pudding &/or whipped cream ... & tastes like a Shake from McDonald's etc
p.s. also found www.hometownfavorites.com when Google 'Alba'

I buy my ALBA SNACK SHAKE MIXES at Giant foods,WEST GROVE, PA. FOR MILK CHOC,AND VANILLA, HAVE GOT THE DOUBLE CHOC AT TIMES THEIR, AND HAVE ORDER A CASE(12), FROM THE VENDOR WHO BRINGS THE ALBAS TO GIANT. I ALSO HAVE PURCHASED ALBAS THRU AMAZON.COM BUT WHEN THEY STARTED CHARGING FOR SHIPPING, I LOOKED FOR A ALTERNATIVE, AND GIANT WAS THE ONE.

Until recently have been able to purchase at Stater Brothers Corona Calif , but it has gone missing! I too was introduced through Weight Watchers, but it has become a family favorite. I prefer the vanilla because I mix it w/fruit at times ...sometimes I take banana's that have started to turn & freeze them to have on hand when I make the malts & prefer to add chocolate( protein powder or ovaltine ) of my own preference at this time along w/ice to make a great low cal shake! My family requests them for breakfast-quite filling- or for an evening dessert! Hopefully Staters will restock or will be forced to purchase on line!
