soy candle wicking issues

I started making soy candles a few months ago. I am using ecosoya cb 135 and making 8 oz jelly jar candles with fragrance oils from nature's garden and no dye. I am having a very difficult time trying to find a wick that burns properly. I am currently testing lx wicks and they seem to burn well at the beginning but as the candle burns down in the jar the flame is starting to flicker constantly. Can anyone tell me what could possibly be causing this? I also noticed the same problem with cd wicks. Thank you.

The total volume of the jar is not the only factor. The diameter of the jar can also affect your result. Most sites that well wicks have an online guide, to help you choose the right one. They usually go by the diameter of the jar.

BTW, if your jars are wide & shallow, you may need to double-wick.

I use 415 soy wax and wick with cd 12 or 14 depending on the fragrance oil and dyes. I purchase them at Bitter Creek. They are listed under Heinz Stabillo Coreless German wicks. I pour into mason jars so it should be comparable.

Well to be quite honest. It takes longer than a few months to work out a quality consumer safe product. However, the best place to start is with a kit. It takes some of the guess work out for you, gets you familar with the process, and gives you building blocks to work with. Check the link out below. Moonglow carries EL waxes, and some of their fragrance oils. Otherwise like I said Call up Enchanted Lites and ask for Bruce. He might be able to put a kit together with stuff they carry right there. If you are pouring your wax when it is still too hot, it will form that kind of indentation. Do you check the temperature before pouring? I like to pour when the wax is around 110 F.

Um I make soy candles which are from 100% soybean wax, no additives. I only add fragrance oil, and I use natural fiber wicking. Where you have a fire and burning, you'll have soot. Sometimes, if I've over wicked a tester, I'll get black soot, not like thick smudgey stuff that is common in alot of paraffin commercially made candles but none the less soot...veggie, and soy candles can make black soot. And if burned properly a quality made paraffin candle will not make black soot either. And there is truth to the burning of petrolum/paraffin can cause asthmatics to have issues with breathing, and some animals as well.

I have gotten good results with GB464 & Eco 10's. So the questions that come to mind are: How long do you let a candle cure befoe first burn? I would give it 48 hours. What oil are you using? They do not all work equally well. You have to go through a lot of trial & error to find the ones that work. I recommend keeping a little notebook to keep track of what works & what does not. Also, try things from different companies. No one company will have equally goud results with every oil they sell.

It depend on the jar size, you have to decide the right wick depending on your jar size. You will find online guides to use CD wicks with the different jar sizes.
