Salve & Solid Lotion Bar

Hi there,

Could someone be so kind to explain the difference between the salve and solid lotion bar? besides your oil and beeswax, what else would you put in it to achieve the texture?

i want to try putting some oil together but not sure which one of the 2 I should make and how i should make them... i found some recipes for both on the web and here but the ingredients seem similar (oil and beeswax) so i am not sure if they are the same thing.

Salves are a softer texture. You'd use more oils in it.

Which ever one you want to make. I use butters and oils and beeswax in my lotion bars.

For what its worth, when I think of a salve, which does have a softer texture, I think of something with herbal healing qualities, whereas a lotion bar, while it is harder would be used primarily for skin softening. I use lavender essential oil, and tea tree essential oil and calendula comfrey infused oils to make my salves.

I've had good luck with many different brands & types- it seems like the key or common ingredients are shea butter (miraculous) goat's milk lanolin vitamins A & E aloe I've had excellent results using aloe straight from the plant for a lot of problems other than burns. Last week I had an insect bite that turned red, got chapped, flaked, & *itched* like fire. I tried every single remedy in the medicine cabinet with no effect, & then... I accidentally broke off an aloe vera leaf. Figuring I didn't have anything to lose, I squeezed the fluid onto the spot & the itch stopped immediately & the place started to heal.

I trust you have obvious accommodation for guests to dry their hands....otherwise they will use the towels you have. I can't imagine putting anything in my powder room that I wouldn't expect guests to use....I have mouthwash with plastic cups, hand lotion, soap, towels, tissues, spare TP...it's all for them. I've thought about using the paper guest towels, but we are on a septic system and I'm afraid people may try to flush them and cause all kinds of plumbing issues I'd rather not have....so instead I have plenty of towels to be used. Otherwise, as suero suggests, tie them up. Perhaps you can compromise with usable towels...perhaps in white cotton so they can be washed many times without issue... paired with a tied up decorative.

i would be especially careful about selling products for babies. no essential oils or rag weeds in the products. in fact, i would not sell baby products at all. what a huge responsibility. make sure you have researched and are careful and have insurance.

It's not always that cut and dried sometimes. I ended up with totally messed up electrolytes and really lowsodium levels from a blood pressure med I was taking. My doc only tested my electrolytes because I started noticing I was constantly drinking heaps of water, peeing heaps and felt like I was dehydrated throughout the day. When people sweat heavily and frequently in hot climates or working outdoors in the heat it can also affect their sodium and other electrolytes. I've also found in the past there have been periods where I get annoying muscle tics. For years I put up with them but eventually found taking a magnesium supplement seems to resolve it. Bananas are a good source of potassium and magnesium but some people (like me) can't eat them so sometimes we do need extra from other sources, and lifestyle or climate can affect our individual need for higher/lesser amounts.

Yes, I'd have to agree, salves usually "seem to mean" healing.

thank you terri and cajungardener, thats exactly the information i was looking for. i want to do a healing product with infused oil (calendula, comfrey and other herbs) but not sure whether to do it as a salve or lotion bar, now i know :)

another question for cajungardener, when you infuse your herbs in oil for salve, do you do them individually or just mixed individually infused oil? i am thinking of infusing the herbs together to make this salve unless there is disadvantage to it. if i do it separately, i will probably end up with a significant amount of oil ... i am planning on using olive oil (promace grade) to infuse herbs with for its long shelf life, are there better options?
