Why does my soy candle turn color during burn?

I am wondering if I am doing something wrong in the process of making my soy candles. I'm a newbie so I know it's going to take some time to perfect and there will be some trial and error. When I started making them, my first batch was perfect. I couldn't believe it, was so excited that it was that easy to do at home. Well, the next batch when doing a test burn on a 4 1/2 oz container candle, I noticed the candle had turned a different color during the burn. I make another batch with a different scent...same thing. One batch turned brownish tan, and the other a light green but the unburned portion below was still creamy white. It honestly looked like a color layered candle. Then I tried adding color to try and hide the discoloration. That didn't work. The coloring after the burn is a bit lighter than the actual color after it initially set and has a tan tint to it. Am I burning the candle too hot with the wrong wick, adding too much fragrance, or does this naturally occur with soy wax? The hot scent throws aren't very strong and I'm currently working on that so my first initial thought was that maybe it's the wick / wick's I'm using. My first batch didn't burn that way at all. Any suggestions on types of wicks I should be using on 4 and 4 1/2 oz container candles and 8-14 oz container candles? I know not to use lead or zinc, but I'm wondering if the size of the wick is where I'm going wrong causing the candles to burn (1) too hot (2) not hot enough. Thank you for any advice in advance!

A little lightening of color (called "frosting") is to be expected. But significant discoloration should not happen. The wrong which is certainly a possibility. Most sites that sell them should have a guide to help you choose the right ones.

Jessica, in my opinion the best soy wax is made by Enchanted Lites. I use the "original" container blend. This company is a part of the Bean Pod Co. (I've tested alot of straight soys, blends and a few veggies, even the C-3.) A thicker wick? Do you mean dipped thicker or a "larger" wick? Wicking is really the key to a proper burn. All wicking is not the same, and it takes time to figure out the perfect wicking for the container and the wax..Also adding in the fragrance oil used and dyes(if using). Hence why it takes lots of time to get it spot on. I make double wicked soy candles that burn over 100 hours. THEY BURN FOREVER. It's all in the consumption rate of the wax in relation to the burn of the wick. I can take the same amount of wax and fragrance oil "recipe" and put it in a different shaped jar with one wick and the burn time is changed...

Ive found the throw can be hit or miss depending on the actual fragrance oils you use. We've always done 8% FO at 185 high temp, then cool to 135 then pour. Experimentation is always important, even if it takes time to get it right. As a graphic designer, I keep my wax supplies and melting rig right next to my computer, so I can do tests while I work. I was wondering the same as above, if you had dripped a bit of water/juice or even your rinsing water someplace in your kitchen. Are you pretty certain the smell is not coming from your drain, if you deveined, washed over your sink? Shrimp juice gets really bad, really quickly. Cleaning clams can leave my kitchen a little funky the few times I have cleaned here instead of at the beach. I mix about 1/4 C bleach in a quart or so of water and pour that down the drain, followed several minutes later by a flush of water, takes care of it. I totally agree on the shrimp not keeping in your refrigerator that many days, while always admitting up front I am blessed with freshest seafood here this close to the ocean. I've taken it off the boat, and kept it three or 4 days. If that came from your grocery store, it was probably already older than that. A good way to keep fish, shellfish the longest possible time at its freshest (and I'm not talking about a week or longer here), is to put it in a colander and cover with ice, sit the colander in a shallow pan and put that in your refrigerator. Replenish the ice as needed. As the ice melts, it continuously bathes the shrimp, crab, fillet or whatever you have. That keeps the bacteria from staying on the fish, spoiling it and increasing its scent (which should be next to none) sooner.

I've grown them fine indoors 'til they got too big for my space. Yours looks like it sunburned & yes, planted too deep. They're not succulents at all, their thinnish leaves really do burn as you learned. These plants need abundant watering, since they're tropical. I'd make sure the soil is fast draining, add a pebble tray & to keep such color, give it maximum light you can but w/ GRADUAL exposure so as not to burn it again.

Hi! I'm doing soy candles for the first time and tryed CB-135 with US ECSENTIA chocolate fudge FO (10%) The contaminar have 3" of diameter,. The candle looked lovely: smoth surface and very fragrant. 24h after, I Light the candles ( I make 3 diferent wicks: eco wick 4 ; eco wick 6 (following wick Guide) and small woodwick from 4CANDLES. Wick 6 did made a nice melt pool and the wick 4 also get the edges but not so quickly. The woodwick make the candle tunneling. The scent was perfect and I was confident. After reach a Good melt pool I let the candle burn for about 3 hours. When wax resolidify, There was an awful brown strip on the three candles on the place of the melting pools. Next day lighted the candles again: very poor scent, the melting pool get much more time to achieve but did with wick ECO 6 and ECO 4 and did not with woodwick. The colour of the surfaces get much more dark even. I try the same wax with diferent scents this time: 2 from 4candles and 1 from scent perfique. now I have to Wait 48h and then light then to see what happen. If someone did already face this problem, please help me.
