Delurking for a CP Soap Question

Hi all,

I've been CP soaping very occasionally for the last couple of years, just making enough bars for myself and one friend. Have never had a problem until last night, so I guess I've had good luck. But last night I made a batch that I'd like your opinion on...and this was a recipe I had never used before.

It was a mix of sunflower, olive, and coconut oils. I measured everything correctly according to the book, the soap traced as it should, I added the FOs and stirred a little more. Still looking good. I then started pouring the soap into the mould and YUK! It look like it curdled and kinda separated once in the mould. I poured it back into the pot and tried to remix it, but it didn't remix completely. I poured the mix back into the mould and let it sit until tonight.

Took it out of the mould and noticed it was kinda floating in an oil/water mix. I would guess total amount of the oil/water floating around was abt 1/4 cup in a 4 lb batch.

My question is...do you think this is going to be safe to use? The back of the book mentioned separation...a little separation was OK, but a lot meant a caustic soap.

My problem is very limited space to cure soap...if you think this stands a good chance of being caustic, I'd rather just pitch it and make a new batch (with my favorite recipe) this weekend.

Make sure that your scale is consistently correct.

What FO did you use? (Let me guess, a white floral? (

What temperature did you soap at? (The cooler, the better. Try around the 100F to 110F mark

Are you using a stick blender? Hope so.

(Guessing): Either the wrong FO, or it wasnÂt mixed thoroughly enough.

I have never had separation. If you think about it, your superfatting would be around the 5% to 8% mark of the total recipe. If youÂre looking at the percentage of oils/fats floating around in the mold, then I would HP it.

If you measured everything correctly, then it would be lye heavy because all of the fats/oils didnÂt mix in with the lye solution thoroughly enough.
You could HP it (crockpot? Maybe?) Into soap.
I donÂt care for HPÂed soap, itÂs usually rustic looking, but it is soap, nonetheless.
Usually, if you post the recipe and method of soaping that was used, maybe others might be able to pipe in?

When soap seizes after you've added a fragrance oil, add warm water-- just enough to get it semi-fluid again. This is really hard with a stick blender but a regular electric hand mixer can handle it. Bring it all back to trace then dump in the mold.

If your mix will not trace, or if it separates again, my guess is that (1) your lye is old; (2) weights were wrong.

Sunflower oil, btw, makes a soft soap but an excellent shampoo & is often used in liquid soap recipes for that reason.

Rain water vs. dehumidifier water: when water vapor condensates in the air, it does so around a dust/airborne particle of some sort. Collect rainwater, cover, and let settle. You'll see the dust settle out. In your house (basement) there's probably less dust in the air and the vapor doesnÂt need it to initiate condensation. IÂve never seen any settling from dehumidifier water. Also, especially in urban/industrial areas, the atmosphere can contain sulfur dioxide that becomes sulfuric/sulfurous acid in water. As for dissolved metals (from the coils), the water isn't in contact with the coils long enough to foster any appreciable transfer. Both Zinc (Zn) and Copper (Cu) have solubility of less than 10 mg per liter (about a quart) of water (listed as ÂtraceÂ in most references). IÂve been using it on all my plants the ÂrequireÂ rain or distilled water including several Venus Fly Traps and a couple of Pitcher Plants and they are doing fantastic. They are my ÂecofriendlyÂ way to control those flying insect pests in my jungle office. A word of caution: I regularly check for any mold starting on the condensate bucket. It would be interesting for a chemist or someone with lab access to do a quick read for dissolved metals in dehumidifier condensate.

So the use of extracts in CP soap is basically out. I figured that. However, in M&P it seems to be okay. I have also used cinnamon oil and clove oil in M&P soap, along with vanilla. The fragrance seems to last a long time, or at least as long as most fragrance oils do. It does require more extract to achieve a good fragrance than it does fragrance oil. The mint is especially hard to achieve a good fragrance with, I think, but the cinnamon oil and also ground cinnamon seem to produce a strong fragrance. Susan

depends on if you are doing melt & pour glycerin soap or if you are making cold proccess soap. If it's melt & pour, (M&P) it's easier to buy it already made into goatsmilk base....or you can ge plain & add your own goatsmilk powder to it. Then either fragrance/essential oil. This you can use immediately. If it's cold process you want to do, look on the web for recipies....it would involve palm, coconut, olive or vegetable oils (or a combination), lye, goatsmilk or goatsmilk poweder & fragrance/essential oil. THis has to age 4-6 weeks before using it. If you want to do cold process (CP) soap, it might be easier to start with a plain recpe first, then move to the more complicated ones. Good luck....both are fun to do. I'm just to impatient for the CP, so I went to the M&P. Plus the colors are brighter, & the scents can be made stronger in M&P...it's much more forgiving than CP. Hi Terri, I use ice cubes so that I donÂt have to wait for the lye solution to cool down. I used to filter when I first started this hobby(?) by boiling the town water first; then did without the boiling (we have very good water, but I donÂt like the chlorine smell when I drink it)), now we have a new fridge and the filter is built-in (the ice is made by the fridge/freezer, of course!). I use a 30% water discount and use all ice, I usually donÂt add water to make up the ice weight difference, so I maybe a bit over or a bit short. I like to soap cool/body temp, for both the oils and the lye solution. I will prepare the lye solution, then add my additives to either the lye solution or the oils, , while the lye solution is just sitting there cooling; at the same time my oils/fats have come out of the microwave (these are always premeasured) and I wait for body temp for the oils. I do not super heat these oils, so it doesnÂt take long. Trace is in about 10 or so minutes. hth
