Crystal rock potpourri

New to site! Saw crystal rock potpourri at a couple craft shows for the first time and would like to try this. Can anyone tell me if they have tryed this and where I can get the supplies? Can I use ice cream salt, salt for water softners or do I have to order special rock salt? What do I use for color and how do I color? And what do I use for scents and how do I put it all together? HELP!!!!!

Here's a recipe from Barbara Milo Ohrbach's book, "The Scented Room", which I have made dozens of times. Men seem to like this as much as women. 5 oz lavender flowers 2 oz blue malva flowers 1 oz cornflowers (I often use larkspur) 3 oz whole cloves 1 oz cinnamon sticks, broken 1 oz cassia chips 1/2 oz powdered allspice 1/2 oz powdered cinnamon 1 oz powdered orrisroot 15 drops lavender oil She also has a recipe called, "Cherchez's Old English Rose Potpourri" which is my favorite. I saw your thread on the Herbalism forum and had to come over here as I love making my own potpourri. I can't stand the smell of the synthetic stuff! I've dried all sorts of flowers, herbs, and leaves for potpourri. My DH made screens with wood frames so I can do quite a bit at a time. However it also works if you just lay the flower petals on a towel on a tray. You may have to stir them so they dry evenly. I've used many of my culinary herbs as well as different flowers. It's best to take the petals off except with small flowers. You could also cut the stems long, tie them together, and hang them to dry. The color of flowers can change quite a bit when dried. Red roses darken when dry but are still attractive. Yellow roses darken a lot. Calendula stays bright orange. I like my little Johnny-Jump-Ups as the color stays nice. A few years ago I did a lot and sold bags of it. Rose petals and lavender are my fav scents for our bedroom. Lemon scented herbs are nice in the kitchen. I use essential oils for scent as well as cinnamon sticks, whole allspice, and cloves. Small pine cones and poppy pods are other materials to use for interest. You might also look for other pods with interesting shapes. Even if they don't have scent they add texture and absorb essential oils. Another way to scent your home naturally is with citrus pomander balls. I've used oranges and lemons and just stick lots of cloves in them in a design. Roll in ground cinnamon and dry on a cake rack, turning daily. Some people use a fixative such as orris root but I don't. I like to do these before Christmas. I've also made wreaths with fresh stems of botanicals. I just wove and wrapped them around a wire coat hanger shaped in a heart or round shape. When dry they are fragile but last awhile.

I don't know, but I have read at places that sell the glass, that you need the correct burner. That doesn't mean they just want to sell a burner, it might be required to be safe. Woodland direct, for instance says their glass should be used "only when using vent-free approved burner system". Call them (by "them" I mean anyone that sells the glass) and ask if you can use it with the burner that you have, that you are not interested in replacing the burner. Since I am sure they would rather sell just the glass than nothing at all, if they don't recommend using it unless you replace the burner, then you probably have your answer. You could also visit a local fireplace dealer and ask.

I have been working, working, working (at my REAL job). However, we are trying to get ready for our first show the first weekend in October, but I am selling everything (soap) as fast as I can get it made! Which is good, but I am afraid the merchandise will be slim for the show. I did buy some of those foamer bottles from WSP and I am very impressed with them. I had some bath gel, which was very nice and thick but when I added fragrance to it, it became very watery and wanted to separate, whether I warmed it and added the fragrance or whether I just added it to the base as-is. The co-op I got it from (Cybilla) said to add about 1/2 teaspoon for 8 ounces. Well, I like very fragrant products and half a teaspoon just doesn't get it for me. Anyway, I had made a big batch in several fragrances (before I realized it was a flop) so I had all of this bath "gel" that wasn't fit to sell. Someone on my yahoo soap group suggested that to salvage it I could try putting it in a foamer bottle. I did, tonight. Boy is it great- the foam is very smooth and silky and really great. The bottles are pump; I don't know how they make such wonderful foam from such a slight pump, but it didn't take much of a pump at all to produce a handful of foam. I think it will sell well. I'd also like to try to formulate some kind of shaving foam for my son. I make shaving soap for him, but he'd really like to have foam. (I have to use SFIC bases for him as he is allergic to any other type of soap products). So, if you haven't tried one yet, try one of those foamer bottles. Susan

Bath Crystals

2 cups of rock salt

Glycerin

Food coloring

Essential oil of your choice

You can make your own bath crystals with rock salt crystals, glycerin, essential oils and food coloring. Prepare your work area with newspapers. Measure out 1/2 cup of the salt in to four different glass jars. Choose a color for each jar of bath crystals, keeping in mind the essential oil you will use to scent it with. Measure out 6 drops of glycerin into a bowl. Add one or two drops of the chosen food color into the glycerin. Stir the coloring evenly into the glycerin using craft stick or metal spoon. Quickly stir the mixture into the salt of one of the containers. Mix until the color is even, or leave it partially mixed for a more textured result. Continue this procedure with each jar.

To scent your salts you will need essential oils such as lime (enlivening), peppermint (exhilarating), lemon (refreshing), cinnamon (stimulating), tangerine (calming), lavender (relaxing), patchouli (peacemaking), rosemary (awakening), rose geranium (renewing), etc. You can get these at candle shops or craft stores. The words in the parentheses are the aromatherapy benefits derived from each scent. Choose a fragrance to complement the color of the salt you have already tinted. Add 20 to 25 drops of an essential oil for each cup of colored salt crystals, using a separate dropper for each scent. Mix with a metal spoon to blend thoroughly. Pour the bath crystals into a decorative jar, put on the lid and label. To use, add two tablespoons or more to a warm tub of bath water. Relax and enjoy.

A Note of Caution: Be very careful when using essential oils. They are strong enough to dissolve or mar plastic and wood finishes. Undiluted oils can actually burn the sensitive skin of your lips and tongue. They are also strong enough to burn your eyes. If you get full-strength oils on your fingers, wash your hands immediately with soap and warm water. Be sure not to rub your eyes with oily fingers. If you do get oil in your eyes flush them with clear water and call a doctor.

Crystal Rock Potpourri is made from water softener crystals.
They became real popular about 3 years ago. You can buy the crystals at Lowes or Home Depot 40 pounds for $5 0r $6.
