Soap & Candle Making

Questions from a Newbie

Hi there,

I am new to soap and lotion making but an opportunity came to me and i can buy some supplies from an ex-soap and candle making person at quite good price.

she has mainly carrier, frangrance and essential oils but all is about 2-3 years old. are there shelf life for these oild and will they still be worth buying?

Well I'd say that might be pushing it. Were all these oils kept in glass amber bottles and stored in a dark cool place?
Some might be fine, others might now.
I'd definately not buy until I could sniff and look at each and every thing.

thanks terri,

thats exactly what i thought when i heard how old the oils were. she said she had them stored under a staircase. and the essential oils are in either litre bottles or 5 litre bottles, but didnt say if they were glass. i think i will pass on them ...

You don't Need both, but you can run the second one anyway. For example, you could create the appearance of a side stream entering the pond. You might enjoy looking at cliffandjoann's posts. There is a specific post about using cheap harbor freight pumps for that purpose. Otherwise they would be for aspiration but the secondary pumps look real nice.

I am not an electrical code genius so I could be off. I do really welcome correction and further information. The discussion that you linked had to do with using 15 amp devices (outlets/receptacles) on 20-amp circuit. It is kind of out of context in this thread. That "said", this seems to be the root of what is confusing you. To me, there seems to be a major difference between convenience outlet circuits (low power) and circuits for higher power appliances. The latter always seem to be dedicated, meaning that multiple outlets are not allowed. I can only speculate about what the logic or underlying safety reasons are, what exceptions there might be, and where the break point is (Are multiple outlets allowed on 15- or 20-amp 208/240 circuits, for example?). An appliance might suddenly develop a higher current because it is broken (short circuit). This could be why branches are not allowed on higher power circuits. (Here I go stepping off over the speculation abyss.) The manufacturers may depend on the fusing to protect against exploding devicee (stoves, dryers, etc.). I doubt it though. I think that the wiring in appliances is supposed to be pretty well enclosed so that it can not cause an external fire though the results of an internal short can be pretty impressive. OTOH, the dichotomy might be simply due to the higher power of the circuits running through your walls and through power cords/pigtails, more power = more heat (bigger explosion) if there is a fault. Look at it this way, if your oven has a cord capable of 20A and the cable leading to the plug and the breaker both handle 50, what could happen to that cord if it suddenly get 50 and up amps for a few minutes? That is physics 101, it has some mass to it and it will get pretty hot.

You'll get a lot of different info on gardening because the techniques for gardening change depending on where you are, and what you're trying to grow. One reason I like container gardening is you remove a few of those variables, and the information on it is more consistent. You might not want to use a greenhouse in the summer, their main purpose is to keep frost away from plants in the winter. Just get a few containers, and try growing something on your patio in those. Peppers are a good plant to begin with as they work well in containers. If you're going to grow them in the summer, most varieties will do a lot better in shade for most of the noon portion of the day. It's still easy to get them at least 6 hours of sun each day doing that. As far as transplanting, it's generally best to do it in ideal weather for the plant because there's usually some stress on the plant when you transplant them. I've never used the aqua globe, but I love by the automatic watering system I use (1/2" and 1/4" distribution tubing with a timer) If you get a chance to grow something in the ground, you can start armenian cucumbers in the summer here, they love the heat.

Looks like it's starting to rot...Can you remove it and check the roots? If they are white I would only cover the roots and let the the base stem be exposed to moving air. Also you could put a thin layer of cinnamon on that area to prevent further rot.

I would say if you were going to use them in things that weren't going on your skin directly, they might be alright.
Candles, airfresheners...that kinda thing..but I'd be very leary for skin use.

I admin a forum that has candle makers and soapers and Bath and body people.

Essential oils and some fragrance oils have a rather long shelf life. I've been soaping for over three years and have a few bottles of essential oils that still are as good as they were when I bought them.

However, some of your carrier oils can go rancid if they age, while others will keep longer but not 2 or 3 years normally...or at least I haven't had carrier oils last that long.

I would check prices of new items, verses prices of the items that are for sale and compare..and..if you're close enough to the person selling them, I'd go take a few sniffs of stuff.

i did check out the stuff and actually bought it all from her. the essential oils all smell fine and she had a lot of amber glass bottles and plastic bottles that i can use, so i thought what the heck and bought them all. also lots of candle supply although i have not even tried making candles.
