NEED ADVICE - Kitchen Island Granite Overhang Support
Comments (8)I worry when my 200 lb teenage son puts weight on my 12" overhang ... yours just seems like an accident waiting to happen. I would never think of putting weight on a cantilevered surface like this, but most people don't even give it a thought and some would even hop up and attempt to sit there!...See MoreLong Granite Island Support Advice - 7' "Table"/Island
Comments (11)I don't think 7.5 feet can be considered an overhang. I would think if you want an island and a table in one, for the 7.5' island you'd have your base cabinets (drawers) and then I would imagine you'd need to build an actual table or similar structure with legs and a top to "rest" the remaining slab on, in order to have proper support for a table. Do you have a photo or something you are basing your idea on?...See More8ft x 4ft Kitchen Island - What size island lights?
Comments (11)Hi Michelle, This thread has had no action in two years; it is unlikely you will get an answer this way. Although only two days old, your comment is already 5 pages back, because there is so much posting here. The best thing is to begin a new thread asking about the size you are considering. Be sure to give more details, the size and layout of the kitchen, etc. so the good people who answer will already have that info and be able to answer more quickly and accurately instead of having to ask you (which will add to the time for you to get answers) or say 'it depends; give us more information.' The other reason to begin a new thread is that the current one asks about the size of the island lights. I think you are asking about the practicality of the size of island itself you are considering. Anyone searching for a thread on your topic would not find it easily because it is a different topic than the original one. A new thread would allow you to get answers tailored to your question and situation. That would be most helpful for you when trying to make decisions. It would also help others who want to know! I hope that makes some sense....See MoreNeed advice On Kitchen Island countertop strucuture
Comments (25)The island support also has to be integrated with the decorative elements. That can’t be an afterthought. In the island below, we used a flat steel plate with small welded flanges that aren’t visible. Flat steel is too flexible. The flanges add rigidity. Once the steel was designed, I then had to design how the steel would integrate into the wood. The cabinet side was built thicker, to accept the weight of the bent tabs of the steel that had to be attached to it. The blocking in the toe area is directly under the cabinet wall, providing support all the way to the floor. The cabinet box was also routed out to accept those tabs, before it was finished, so there would be no exposed raw wood anywhere. The steel tabs were bolted to the side, and countersunk, so that nothing protruded. The decorative cabinet panel was routed to account for the steel support flanges, before being finished. Again, no raw wood anywhere. The steel post accepts a steel locator pin that was location plotted, and drilled into the floor and subfloor. No kid will come sliding through and bang into it, knocking it askew. The steel support was then finally installed to the cabinet side, and then the decorative panel was then applied over that. That’s what went into that “simple” design. And seriously, it IS simple compared to some. But if your KD and GC isn’t able to do this? You have people on your team that ought to be back in the minor leagues sitting on the bench. This is is an ordinary day at the shop for any experienced Pro....See MoreJoseph Corlett, LLC
