Triclosan beads?

Ok, I know this is a little anal retentive, but did anyone ever get liquid soap from Bath and Bodyworks? It comes in a hand pump bottle and in alot of great scents.

It's got little Triclosan beads suspended throughout the soap that is supposed to be antibacterial, which I don't care about, but it makes the soap look kinda cool. The beads dissolve away and I was wondering if anyone knew where to get some, if it's proprietary and if there's an equivalent?

It's just fun and I thought I'd try to replicate it.

No idea, huh? Ah well, thought I'd try...must be a Bath and Bodyworks exclusive.

Thanks for the information Meagan, this is turning into a very enlightening read. I rescind my knee-jerk recommendation of remedial biology courses. I'll preface this for any non-squeamish readers who are still around by mentioning out that: 1) bacteria are everywhere, E. coli included. A typical human contains more bacterial cells than human cells. Yup, we are covered with bacteria, and are still healthy. 2) most bacteria are harmless, or beneficial (we need E. coli in our guts). 3) most people have good immune defenses that take care of problem bacteria, exceptions are the very young, very old, or immunocompromised. Hospitals need special precautions. 4) There are a few VERY bad bacteria, as examples a particular strain of E. coli O157:H7 (the BAD E. coli) and MRSA, PRSP etc. ------ Given that bacteria could get into a soap reservoir, and even multiply (growing on what? and how do they survive and reproduce at that osmotic pressure? amazing prokaryotes!), is a container of bacterially contaminated dishwashing soap under the sink at home going to cause any health problems? What is the resultant dosage level, and depending on the bacterium, is this enough to cause disease? (BAD E. coli may be an exception here, but if you have enough hanging around in the kitchen to get sucked back down into the soap you are probably already hospitalized). The few studies I have seen show that even washing with intentionally contaminated bar or liquid soap (with marker bacteria) after rinsing did not result in bacterial contamination of people's hands. Note that Dr. Gerba's research as cited here was funded by GOJO soap manufacturers, and the report conclusions have not been peer reviewed. His results may be fine, this is just something to note.

1) I didn't even think about custom cabinets as an option because I assumed they would be too expensive. When I received a quote for the semi-custom brand I planned to order, I was shocked at the cost, so decided to get a few custom cabinet quotes just to see. They were surprisingly close in price (some custom lines were actually much lower). Since I wasn't limited to specific sizes, it greatly improved my whole design, allowed me to get a bigger sink and some other custom options. It also changed the entire look of what I originally planned. I went from full overlay, raised panel to beaded inset, recessed panel doors. It's really more like the look I wanted all along. 2) After demo, we decided to move the main kitchen doorway over a few feet, which allowed us to include a buffet which will house a much needed appliance garage and provide a lot of extra storage. 3) One of the last minute changes was to a farmhouse sink. I had originally ruled it out based on the likeliness of it chipping, but someone on GW mentioned the video demo of the Kohler cast iron apron front sinks and I was sold. 4) One change early on in the planning stages involved the windows. We had a large, beautiful bay window where the kitchen table was and a very small window over the sink. There was no question we were going to change the sink window to three much larger windows, but I was playing around with the idea of eliminating the bay window altogether and extending the run of sink windows. We did that and it brought in so much more natural light and we gained so much more cabinet space. It greatly enlarged the whole kitchen area.

gsciencechick - my husband works away 10 days at a time, and the facility he lives in provides laundry soap. When he came home I had to rewash all of his clothing, and I could still still smell whatever soap they were providing. He ended up taking some of his own unscented detergent & dryer sheets with him. I use Nellie's All-Natural Washing Soda and LOVE it. Deodorant is another scented product that I too find intolerable. And it can be hard to find a good unscented antiperspirant. I'm also a fan of Dr. Bronner's (love the Almond scent), Seventh Generation (fabric softener) and Method (I like the lemon-mint hand soap). Naturally scented products, ie: peppermint, lemon, etc. are much more tolerable for me.

Hi, I'm not a soap or candle maker, but I lurk here sometimes, you are all so creative!
I saw your question and went on a mission to find an answer! I always have 3 or 4 bottles of that BBW soap on hand, and love the stuff :) I may be wrong, but from what I can find, the Triclosan isn't the beads, it's an antibacterial agent. The beads are either polymer beads or polyethylene beads. I checked the label on one of the bottles of BBW soap, and they list polyethylene as an ingredient.
Now, I can't find much on polyethylene or polymer beads other than they're used in soaps (duh), and there's special suspension bases that are used to keep the beads floating rather than sinking.
I did however find Jojoba spheresthat are also used as an exfolient. They also come in differnt colors and can be used in scrubs, soaps, gels, etc.

Nikki!!!! How are you??!!!! Thanks for the heads up on the spheres - they sound very interesting - I'm going to have to try them!!! And yes, this helps alot! But I already know what a huge helper you are!!! ;o)

OMG! Nikki, YOU ROCK! That's *exactly* what I was looking for! I don't know why I thought those beads were made of triclosan...I think I read the label, saw the pellets through the clear bottle and just free associated the rest. Duh! and in my searches, I *knew* they were antibacterial, I just thought they were antibacterial spheres. Talk about one track mind!

Your welcome :) It was intersting looking it up. I think there's little ground loofah bits in there too, there's something else in there that's scrubby.
I'd like to know where you get those moisture beads. You know what I mean? They're like teeny tiny little pearls, with oil inside. They burst open when they get wet. They have them in some soaps, and henna shampoo. That would be neat!

Hi Andrea - I have come across a site called (sorry, I don't know how to post a direct link) www.twilighttimefragrances.com. They sell irridescent bubble type beads. They must be plastic or something, I don't think they exfoliate or anything. They would just be
for looks. In fact, they mention putting them in fish in a
bag soap to look like bubbles. Anyway, they have some interesting things to sell & also sell SFIC base. Thanks, Sandra

You should see my craft room. I have one of those 2 door cabinets about 6' tall, about 3Â½-4 ft wide, that is full of soap stuff...one whole SHELF is oils (actually part of a 2nd shelf has SOME oils on it), molds, micas, etc....also a few bath fizzie things. So, like I said I REALLY didn't NEED ANYTHING ELSE to play with!!

well, so far I'm unimpressed with the folks at the jojoba beads site (sunshine soapworks).
I'm STILL waiting for a total so I can pay them, & i've sent an additional email requesting a total, still nothing......

maybe it's just ME, BUT if you have a web site, you ought to check your computer for orders, emails, etc. at LEAST once a day. (Yes, I do have a web site, & yes, I'm checking my computer SEVERAL times a day for orders, emails, etc....)

Ok, rant over......back to your regularly scheduled soapmaking......
