I am Curious (Yellow)

When we had our delicatus countertops installed last September, we were given a three-inch-wide strip from our slab that I took to the paint stores a couple times before it went to live with the leftover stack of floor tiles temporarily residing against the side of the house.

A few days ago my husband began using the granite strip as a weight for the lid on a composting bin and I noticed that one end of the granite--the end that had evidently been exposed to sunlight--had turned a decided yellow.

I took some steel wool to the yellow and toned down its brightness a bit, but it is still very yellow.

Has anyone had their granite countertops discolor from exposure to sunlight? If so, how did you clean them? I'm assuming the issue is with the resin used on the granite.
