Quick question on lead paint

All-

I purchased 2 home testing kits for lead paint (from HD) and neither turned up positive tests for lead on either the sheetrock which I want to tear down or the window sills. I used a razor blade and cut at roughly 45 degree angles to get to the base of the sheet rock and wood sill window frames.

My home was built in the 1950s and I know that there is wallpaper under a couple of coats of paint (and possibly one original coat of paint under the wallpaper).

My question is how can the tests not have turned up lead paint given that from my reading lead paint was removed from paint in the late '70s?

Thanks in advance,
