local scrapbooking

I got hooked on scrapbooking while we were stationed in Europe and now that I'm back I'm dying to get together with other addicts (my husband just doesn't understand the appeal). How do I find conventions/swap meets/parties in my local area (Northern VA/Washington, DC metro area).

Also, I love vellum paper but have no clue what to do with it (other than the obvious snowflakes) - any suggestions?

I too am addicted to scrapbooking !!
If you do a search under Yahoo, Excite, or any other search engine, you should find several listings for scrapbook conventions.

I received a beautiful Christmas card last year from a relative that had vellum paper on it. I will do my best to describe it. It had a decorative cardstock sheet (6 x 8 1/2) as the background(it was white with large red polka dots all over it). In the center of that paper was a lime green sheet of cardstock cut to the size of 4 1/2 x 7 1/2 that had been pasted down. On top of that she had cut the same size from a sheet of ivory vellum paper. This vellum paper was not pasted down to the lime green.. instead, it was attached by a ribbon. To do this, you simpy lay the vellum paper down ontop of the lime green card, lining it up, and punch two holes (about 1" apart) at the top of the entire stack. She then threaded sheer red ribbon through it and that is how the vellum was attached. She had printed her Christmas greeting on the vellum paper prior to attaching it to the card and when you lift the vellum paper, you will find the photo of her children. Very beautiful and creative. Needless to say, I kept the card as a "template" for invitations, birthday cards or any other reason I can think of to make this card.

Angela: I live in Northern VA (North Arlington, to be exact). I haven't looked into convention/swap meets, parties, etc., but you might want to check at Michael's or at some of the other stores that sell scrape book materials. (Maybe even JoAnn Fabrics since they sell some stuff.) I would think that some of the store personal might be able to refer you to people or places. I haven't really gotten into all that and don't even know anyone else who scraps. Good luck on your search and one of these days I might even email to ask what you were able to find!

I don't know what a "snap pack" is - I'm guessing it is one of those sticker-heavy 300 pc all-in-one scrapbooking kits where you punch out frames and stuff. One option would be to make your own snap pack (or whatever). For a small project like this, you can pick out a single product line at your local scrapbooking store. You can mix and match, too - but sometimes I find it easier to have someone tell me what cardstock matches what patterned paper matches what embellishments and fonts. I'd stick to a couple of colors and a couple of page designs and you can mix and match while making the whole book look uniform. With small albums, you can start with 8.5x11 paper and actually print all of your titles and such from your computer and then just trim down to 8x8 or 7x7. Another idea would be to use a pocket album. Creative Memories seems to be promoting this. I haven't tried it, but you basically can trim down pictures and decoratively mat them, make little pocket sized pages for your titles and journaling and then just slide whole photos into the others. Seems pretty quick and easy. My third suggestion would be to use one of the online photo printing sites that sell the custom bound memory books (like snapfish, etc). Wherever you usually get your prints made probably has one of these. They have the pages already coordinated and laid out, you just need to upload pics and type in your text. You can make your own stickers...find some sites on the computer and copy and paste any picture that you want...I do this all the time. Office Max has whole-sheet sticker paper with a transparent background...this works well on your white or light colored album pages. Wal-Mart has whole-sheet white sticker paper that you could use on colored pages...you just have to be a little neater when cutting them out. I did some pages this way featuring Veggie Tales and Hello Kitty...any picture you find (almost) can be copied and pasted. I either put them on a floppy disk or into My Documents and then use them from there....

Janie, The mulberry paper is lovely, but I too would probably use it for tearing and matting. I have seen some pictures using it to make a christmas tree by tearing it, but guaranteed mine would not look like a tree.LOL I do know you have to wet it where you want to tear it before you tear it, theres a web site out there that has the instructions a maybe some ideas.
