leaves from Maine

Just came back from a wonderful trip to Maine visiting with my Daughter and I brought back some Maple leaves to add to my album. I'm not sure how I should do this, after pressing and drying the leaves should I coat them with something, laminate them or put them into those plastic envelopes? Any suggestions appreciated.

Dear Pam,
I think it would be safest to either laminate them or put them in those memory pockets. You might try ironing them inbetween two sheets of wax paper, it might dull the color a little but I believe it would work well and keep the leaves intact. In the memory pockets, they might be brittle and eventually crumble. Try the ironing thing first with one leaf from outside, and if it works well you coulld do it to the Maine ones. Love Penny

Thanks Penny,

I figured the plastic envelope idea wouldn't work because they would eventually fall apart. I will try laminating a leaf and see how that works although I will have to do alot of cutting around it.

Granniek, I grow a bunch of these. My largest is about 4ft tall. This is not the time to repot. I would just stick the pot inside another larger pot and wait for spring. If it must come out, take it out carefully and just up-pot it without disturbing the roots. The Crestwood is spiking now. If you look down inside the upper leaves you might see the spikes. It always flowers in Dec/Jan. I have repotted mine numerous times. I am careful about the roots. Even so, I've lost some flowering. It has always flowered but flowered less the year I repotted. This photo shows the plant sitting in a basket to keep the small pot from falling over. It is not planted in the basket, just sitting inside. It is potted in a clay pot. I stuffed the basket with Styrofoam. I would just support the plant, give it lots of sun and wait for spring. Jane

Thermo-phytic bacteria don't like leaves. Most of the so called cooking going on are the other ingredients not the leaves. Plus leaves layer up and clog your supposed composting. That's why everyone goes to such trouble (and fuel use)to chop them. that way the pieces get small enough to not blow everywhere and cover everything up. they still are not broken down or composted, they're just chopped. Leaves mold. When you throw them around, oxygen gets in and the physical layering is broken so that the mold is unable to work. They should be layered and left alone until nature molds them. There is more ignorance on this subject than any other area on this forum.

If you keep the tomatoes in check on the trellis, I can't see them sprawling over on your peppers.. Go out in nature and observe how plants grow, the are packed in like a jungle.. Yes I understand your growing vegetables, but let's think of plants as a whole, plants are plants.. If you separated wild plants like you did in your garden, they would have more spacing than enough spacing than they do in the wild... I think your plants are fine,you spaced then nicely and you do have a trellis.. Keep them in check and you really don't have to much to lose, but a lot to learn from this.. I would even sneak in some radishes or carrots between plants... Try it out and see what you like.. Trial and error., Joe

Instead of cutting around each leaf, you could laminate them in to sort of a picture frame thing. Penny
