Wrinkled letters and photos

We have a number of very old family letters, documents, & photos that we want to scan to include in albums for some of our family members. Many of the documents are very wrinkled and creased and the paper quite thin and fragile. This makes the scanned image distorted.

We need suggestions for a way to eliminate the wrinkles. I thought about ironing w/ low heat iron but am hesitant as many of the letters are borrowed and I don't want to damage any.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
