Coffee Shop IV - not just for coffee drinkers!

Greetings all. This is a continuation from CS III.

I hope everyone is enjoying the cooler weather. Here in Southern California it got sort of hot again today. We had rain a few days ago and it was wonderful, but it was not enough.

I am looking forward to Saturday because I saw a listing for a garage sale that has some plumeria (plants). I have gotten the plumeria bug! Sunday, my family and I are going to the beach for lunch and walking around. Really looking forward to that.

Brenda, I STILL don't have it. (how about you, Marian?). I've given it several "breaks", too. I figure it's like the .02 discrepancy in a checking account... . The more you look for it the more it camouflages itself. How dense am I?! I've tried looking for patterns in the beans and have identified several... missing the forest for trees, or what? sigh... :)

Almost a year ago I arranged to pick up grounds on the way to work at a "hippy" type coffee shop. It has worked wonderfully, and I've never had too many, although it's been over 16 5lb. buckets a week. I layer them with leaves in a bin, layer them in beds with leaves, spread them on the vegetable garden in the late winter. I have to screen them all, since the filters are left in with them. Over the winter I just stockpiled the buckets, and screened them all in the spring. The coffee shop manager says they put half the amount of stuff in the garbage compared to when I wasn't picking up buckets and grounds. What a win-win.

I use 12 level tbsps of coffee plus about 1 1/2 more for our ten-cup Braun. I always offer guests added hot water if it's too strong, but no one has ever complained. We buy Don Francisco online or from the catalog; it's DH's favorite. Don't care for Starbucks; it tastes very harsh to me. We have a variety of D.F. flavors that we like. When they have a sale we occasionally spring for Kona. There is now a discussion about coffee brewed in French press coffee makers being bad for one's cholesterol. A Dutch study comparing filtered to unfiltered coffee indicated that this was the case. There's a fair amount online about this question. I just googled 'french press coffee cholesterol'. Very interesting information.

Howdy, Folks. I've heard if one hangs a dead crow on a fence near their garden it will keep other crows away. My next door neighbor has had to replant corn three times. Each time it breaks ground crows pull the plant. Yesterday he shot one and hung it on the fence. I've not talked to him and yet don't know the effectivness . This morning I had my coffee and a bagel on the back porch. I kept looking at the dead crow and thought of Poe's, The Raven (remember? Nevermore, Lenore?). When I came to the computer I was inspired. ODE TO A CROW, by Gene My head is low, My feet are high, Different from yesterday - I soared through the sky! A garden I spotted, Oh, I filled with glee, Morsels of young corn just waited for me. On a fence here am I hanging, Corn sprouts were good, but gun went banging! - - - - - - - - - - - I have four coffees (1/2 pound package deal) from Caribou: Caribou blend, Sumatra, French Roast, and Columbia. I'm using the Caribou blend. I didn't want to grind it myself. I told them I wanted it ground for the paper filter type of maker. It came ground very, very thin. I thought it should have been lightly coarse. Am I wrong? That coffee is okay but for my taste buds no much more than less expensive stuff. Gurley, you caught me, didn't you. Yes, I live at Candler. I've never thought alias' were very good anyway. If someone wants to find you bad enough they will. But, it is often recommended by those in the know, isn't it. Thanks for the continuing information, Eloise. It has encouraged me to start doing something. I'm 73, windowed, with three children. I'd like to have things more organized when I move on. I have updated my will in a simplistic fashion for the present. I've found the local N.C. probate office accepts an informal will if signed and no witnesses. There were changes I wanted to make to the old one and that was convenient for the time being. I'm preparing two file folders. One has original documents and the other copies. The other will be furnished a daugher whose named Executor (they don't use Executrix any more). Some of my things require explanation such as an insurance policy which has a face value higher than actual value. I need to include a letter explaining I borrowed some money on the policy years ago and just have never paid it back. Otherwise I think it would be confusing to them. I plan to pay it back if and when I sell a lot. It is dry in WNC! I'm sure it is elsewhere, too. I'm mowing every couple of weeks rather than weekly. It sure makes one think about global warming. But, I have seen it this way even with ground cracking only for the rain to begin and come almost daily until Fall gets here. I still drive the Miata maybe once a week. It's still fun. It came with a supposedly cancelled XM radio. I generally don't try to listen to music because of noise, it being a convertible. I was at a stop light and began messing with the radio. I got an XM channel with 30's and 40's music. It was good listening. I heard later XM has sample days trying to get new subscribers. I wish everyone well. I'm sorry the topic has slowed so much. Maybe it's because of warmer weather and longer days. Maybe it will pick up come cold weather. Sorry about saying those words. Regards, Gene

OMG Michael - You are making my decisions awfully tough. I still like your camera. I checked the website again today and it is no longer the daily special so I lost out on the and additional $10 savings. But, it's still worth it.

I just got back home from my company's Christmas party. One of my co-workers had a Cannon with here. She said that he has owned 5 Cannons and wouldn't get a different brand - ever. I'm going to buy one tomorrow.

BTGW, your pics are absolutely breathtaking. That zoom is something else!!

BTW, that's a lot of snow!!

    Enjoy it!

That's actually a light snow gng....it did help to get it to melt the ice that was underneath...I might take a trip out to the lake this afternoon. Should be some geese and turkeys out there, had a pelican out there a few years back but haven't seen one since. I think they figured out a better route than Kansas. I know I would. The late games don't really interest me. Since _enver (left out the "d" since they have no defense) lost the other night, I've lost some of my fanaticism.

That landscape looks like my part of the country. Flat as a fritter. Not now, but for most of my life. We used to joke that when a sailor at the NAS went AWOl, you could see him running for three days. I live in the Hill Country now but really get homesick for the wide open spaces at times.

OMG, those are great pictures, Michael - thanks for sharing them with us!

    last modified: 11 years ago

OK Michael, not fair that you are adding to my confusion with those pictures! They are magnificent. I'm sure if you put a frame around them, you might be able to put the home decor dept of BB&B and L&T out of biz.

pris, I so love that part of the country. When I was staying just north of Chicago for about a year, it was so nice to just get in the car and ride - even got lost and ended up in Wisconsin. I smelled a few things that I hadn't smelled before, but it felt so good to experience that wide-open space. I've been through the mid-west states on a trip to CA with my parents, when I was young. Just brings you "back home"

K-J and Eloise - hey there to ya!!

I'm home today and probably tomorrow, from work, with a twisted knee - YUK. I'm scheduled for an MRI on Thursday morning and I'm hoping for good news. I know there are problems because I fell on icy concrete - stright down, last year when I hurt my shoulder. The shoulder was so bad that I did nothing about the knee. Since then the knee-cap would float. It moved around a pretty good bit yesterday, which I think caused this injury. Wish me luck guys - I'm not normally accident proned, but last year's shoulder injury, and now this - I'm really not too happy right now!! Anyway, thank Goodness for GWF - I've been lurking all day!!

    See ya everyone!!

I will definently wish you luck - I am sorry you are having such problems.

I hope the MRI comes out well for you gng....I took a spill the other day but got lucky and was only sore for a couple days....I hope yours is the same type. You will be in my thoughts.

    last modified: 11 years ago

gng, sorry about your injuries! Hope your MRI comes out squeaking clean, i.e., that you didn't tear anything.

    last modified: 11 years ago

Soooo sorry, gng. I hope it turns out to be something easy to fix.

I don't envy your mri. Do you have an open mri available? I've only had one and will not go back in there again unless sedated. I knew I couldn't get on a crowded elevator but had no idea the mri would cause that reaction. I'm told this only happens to people who are claustrophobic so not to worry.

I know exactly how much that hurts. I have a blind blue heeler who lays on the porch in front of the door. (he wants to be sure he knows when I go in or out the door). His "spot" of course gets pretty slick with the oils from his coat. I came out the door wearing some sandals with slick soles, stepped on his spot and my foot went sky high. I fell on the opposite knee "staight down" and thought I was dying it hurt so bad. (hence the mri)

Michael - Maybe you had "buck fever"????

    last modified: 11 years ago

Well, Pris - since we have to look for rainbows where we can find them, think of it this way: at least you can STILL get your foot 'sky-high'!

    last modified: 11 years ago

LOL...never thought about the buck fever Pris....Never have been deer hunting. Did my share of coyote, pheasant and duck hunting in my earlier years but moved to Colorado and didn't make the annual safari's for a few years. Now I'm back here and have no desire..still have my guns, but they are for intruders, not critters.

    Hi all!!

Thank you so much for all of your encouragement!! I am doing a lot better. At least now I can bend my knee a little. Yesterday was AWFUL - I didn't even feel like myself. I'm still going for the mri though - Dr. was concerned about some tightness in the back of my leg that was coming from the left side of the knee. I think (I hope) it will be fine. I just have to still take it easy for ast least a couple of more days.

I do have more good news - I ordered granite for my KT countertop today!! That a feat unto itself, considering my knee. I called the fabricator to see if I could get her to come down in price a bit, but to no avail. They have the stone but in the wrong color. Because of that, they will but it from the place where I found the best color. That's where I thought I could shave something, but not happening at this point. I called the stone store and they told me that they couldn't guarantee the slab I wanted was still there. Since I had an experience at the same place with someone buying the slab I wnated right under me (I got there to reserve it too late), I rushed, bad knee and all, over there. Sure 'nuf, one of the slabs was gone. So I called my fabricator and she told me to let them know she would issue the PO to them right then. So, off to the races on this one - FINALLY. BTW, I'm getting Crema Bordeux. It's a far cry from where I starte, but it is a pretty stone (well, 2).

Hey Michael, will all that power for intrudors, guess we can't just pop-call on ya, huh! I'm a true carnivor, but truly despise hunting. What an oximoron!

    Take care everyone!!

KJ - Looking back on it, I don't think I had much choice. I'm just grateful I didn't tear anything vital while doing my "air splits".

Michael - I learned to shoot as a kid. My father was a hunter and he made sure we all knew how to handle a gun. But, I wouldn't kill an animal unless I had to for survival and that ain't gonna happen any time soon. I do love venison, though. I'll help you butcher & package for the freezer after the kill but I'm not shooting it. Don't ask to me to help process birds though. Dove hunting is big in my neck of the woods. You have to have a million of them to make a meal and the only thing edible is the breast. Too much work for too little meat.

Regardless, I don't think it matters what your "weapon" of choice is. If you point it and get so excited you can't stop your hands from shaking, then your have "buck fever".

gng - Congratulations!!! Yeah! Granite at last.
Now get that camera because we must have pictures of the countertops when they're finished.
Good luck with your mri tomorrow. Be sure to let us know how it turns out.

On another note - I think I've talked about my companys' sale and the fact that it was supposed to finalize this time last year. Well, we had the "mini-due diligence" yesterday and it looks like it's a go for take-over 1/2/08.
I wasn't looking forward to yesterday but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Now I just have to get through the actual takeover and see how many heads are going to roll, if any. I may be retiring sooner than expected. (I'm not overly concerned as I can draw SS and work parttime and not be in too much of a bind.)

Well, I better start filing this mound of paperwork I had to drag out yesterday.

    last modified: 11 years ago

Gng...glad to see the knee is feeling better, definitely keep us posted on what the MRI says....see the thread about somebody dropping by...I haven't shot anyone...YET!!
Pris, I'm the same way on the survival thing these days and would rather go pick out a nice Rib Eye or a Fillet instead of spending money on shells, license, missing work, etc. Last critters I killed were about 15 coyotes one winter because they were killing the defenseless sheep we had on pasture. Would chase them down on 3 wheeler yamahas...that was a thrill.

Spent so much on the granite the only thing I can get now is a camera!! It cost a BIG penny. But, as my ex says, I should have just gone in and asked to see the most expensive stone and picked that one. It would have save a lot of anguish. He knows me well. Too bad he can't help me pay for it!!! LOL.

OK Michael - perfect timing!! I just logged on to follow up to you on my camera thread - to ask your thoughts about a choice. Those shots you took are great BTW. Here's link to a camera I saw today. I tried out yours but I think it was too heavy or something. So many people were looking at it though. Everyone gave it great reviews. Since the store was out of stock on everything, this late in the Chrismas season, I asked about similar options. The one I looked at has 18x zoom, with 8.1MP. It is beautiful. The other one I was looking at is the Cannon G9 - everyone was asking for it too. But, as with all the rest, they were out of stock. I'm going to wait until after the holidays to see what sales look like. The folks at the store thought I might do OK with buying a disposable for the before/after shots of my kitchen, until I could decide on one to buy after the holidays.

Granite update all - really on pins and needles. I just got an email from the fabricator that the stone store had not sent them the reserve ticket for my stones. I am frantic now because I don't like the other stones, and I already lost another one I liked. We'll see how things go on Wednesday. Please wish me luck on this one. This has been such a long haul on making a decision that I really don't want to have to start over. Plus, with the stone I've already chosen, I would have a new countertop on the 11th - a real Bday present to me on the 13th, which is also a holiday weekend!!

    Granite, granite, granite...!!!

    Merry Christmas ALL!!

That camera looks very tempting Mary....in hindsight after seeing what this one can do, I wish I would have spent a bit more to get an 18x zoom. Your link isn't any less bulky of a camera, I wouldn't think. It all comes down to if you want it for simple point and shoot or more for outdoor nature pics. I'd be willing to wager I upgrade in less than a year now that I see the quantum leap that this one took from my old one. By this time next year, that 18x will be in about the price range I paid for this one, I'd expect.....Merry Christmas to all of you!!!...I plan to drop in for further wishes as the day grows closer.

Jo, a very special Merry Christmas to you!...I know this has been a tough year for you....you are a very dear friend to me and I thank you for encouraging me to try to get back here.

    last modified: 11 years ago

Thanks Michael. That price range is a bit much for me so I'm looking for a sale. I actually found the model underneath for under $300 and it's getting great reviews. I'm going to check for sales on that too because I'd like to stay less than $250. I hadn't even checked that brand and am sooooo surprised at such positive reviews. We'll see what happens.

I gotta ditto you on your comments to Jo. I can tell that there is a special bond - friendship, if you will, between the two of you. That is something to really behold. Jo has been so supportive and passed on so much of her wisdom on this Forum. Many thanks to her!! Oh yeah, glad she revived you back here too. I can't tell you how much I laughed at the old posts. Hugs, and many thanks Jo - and Merry Christmas to ya!!

143 here - getting closer every day. Just want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. (or whatever holiday sentiment you choose to prefer)

Those are really beautiful pictures, Michael. Sure beats the heck out of my digital. But then, I'm not much of a photographer.

I went through my mothers' pictures collected over the years and put them on cd and hard drive to preserve them. They were really beginning to show some age but I could still recognize most of the relatives. Of course, there were some pictures in there that I had no idea who they were. My brother took them to a photo shop to be copied and I couldn't see much difference in the quality of the ones I scanned and the ones he paid to have copied.

gng - Just hang in there girl. Those counter tops will be beautiful when you get them in. Just remember, the squeaky wheel gets the oil so keep bugging them.

Update on sale of the company. Should finalize on the 28th of this month. I have a lot of reports to pull to update their info but can't do anything until it gets closer to the 28th. Then I wait and see what happens. (we were at this point last year in the first week of January and it fell through so I'll just wait.)

Again - Have a Happy Holiday and stay safe.

Hello, Everyone. To be honest I don't know where to post - CS 4 or 5. Anyway, I wanted to jump in and wish all a Merry Christmas.

As I mentioned in an earlier note I follow your discussions and enjoy them a lot. I'm still "sort of" into coffee trials. I need to find someone else, or others, who also want to sample. For instance I bought Island Blend beans at World Market. 24 ounces? That makes a lot of ground coffee and at two or three cups a day it would be around forever. I usually get tired of a brand in a few weeks.

I'm a little late, but Happy Winter Solstice. I'll bet you didn't realize daylight time was longer on Sunday and today.

I've not taken a scenic trip in my Western North Carolina mountains since putting the Miata to bed for the winter. But, I have thought of going to Harrah's at Cherokee to donate a few dollars. Haven't done that in ten years or so. At least I can enjoy different scenery.

Pris, is there a web site that'll take one by the hand and walk them through the process of scanning old pictures and putting them on a disk? I know how to scan but I've never moved anything to a disk. I know each picture has to have a suffix, like .jpg, to be read by other picture programs. Is that all that's to it?

Eloise, thanks for remembering me and I wish you well. That goes for the rest, too.

    Merry Christmas, Gene

Hi Gene! You are OK posting on either, I think. We are just challening CS IV to see how long it will last - taking it to the MAX!! Harrah's sounds good but just don't leave enough to sponser everyone else, if you know what I mean. I know how to save the pics to a CD, but I was trying to walks someone through putting them on a USB card and it didn't work. pris, if you know that - or someone else, add my name to the list of students!! Merry Christmas to you too Gene!!

K-J - pumped...???? Where's the pump; I need it for me!! Thanks for your kind words; they really mean a lot. It's all been fun meeting everyone here. Merry Christmas to you, Kid. Keep smiling and holding on, it's all about one dagggone day at a time. If you get there before I do, throw me a rope, and I'll do the same for someone else when I get to the top - kind of like this Forum. We all just keep helping one another along. When we all get there together, we'll have CSXX or whatever!!

Take care all and have the merriest of Christmases!

Gnee, you are so sweet - Merry Christmas to you, too. Yep, for the most part, this forum moves along smoothly. Every once in a while someone has an unpleasant outburst, but we just accept that as part of something bigger - we never take it personally. I hope and pray that everyone has a safe day tomorrow, as they travel. I am staying home!

So great to see you post Gene! Yep, I was also confused as to which one to post on, CS IV or CS V, when Michael and Jo sort of started the challenge to get this thread (CS IV) to 200 posts. So, here I am, contributing towards that goal, lol!

I haven't tried any new coffees other than buying Starbuck's Peppermint Chocolate Mocca and their Egg Nog one. They are good, although a bit too sweet for me, but I had to try them during this time of the year. There is a World Market close to where I take my grandbaby to Gymboree. I've never gone in that store, but maybe I will just to check out their coffee Gene.

Thanks all of you for being here: Gerry, Gene, Jo, gng, Michael, Pris! Hope I didn't miss anyone. I sincerely wish you all a wonderful Christmas, and may the New Year bring you lots of wonderful surprises!
