attention: ideamom pictures of clary sage?

Hi! I noticed that you posted that you recently painted your kitchen SW clary sage. I just painted a tester on my wall and not sure I like it. It is a much grayer green that I expected it to be and I get quite a bit of southern light in my kitchen. Is there a chance you can post some pictures of your kitchen showing the painted walls? Thanks a lot!

I'm not ideamom, but our kitchen is also painted SW clary sage. The window faces sooth and the patio door faces east.
The album has all our kitchen/bath pictures. I have some on imageshack, but it keeps timing out on me.

Mmm, autumn always seems like the start of the gardeners year - new bulbs, lots of pruning, cuttings for overwintering, harvest, ladling on compost and planting the new bare root fruits, roses and shrubs. After a truly bizarre rainless summer, the allotment has turned sere and brown much earlier than usual. Rudbeckias, dahlias and heleniums and asters had an attenuated show - I always struggle with these prairie type beauties on my sandy soil but one must have them. This year, not even emergency hosing was going to prolong the luminous late summer show of golds, bronzes and purples so I turned my face to the gravel garden which never fails to thrive. Melissa, how I love spanish broom - yep, Spartium junceum can be a thug but what a gorgeous fragrant and elegant one. They twist and bend, making fantastically gnarly shapes and grow huge and fat in East Anglia. Cytisus also grows to shocking tree size, as does Tamarix. Desperate savage pruning has been done. even though the shrubs in question are less than 6 years old, they are eating the shed. A glorious stipa gigantea, planted so carefully to filter the low evening sun, has been overshadowed one one side and totally mugged by a giant acanthus on the other. In truth, the entire gravel garden has to be redone, lifting the remnants of the old membrane (which utterly failed to prevent the millions of verbena, centranthus, ox-eye daisies, althea and eryngiums from seeding with total abandon) and replacing plants which should never have been placed there (legion - Dieramas, Schizostylus, echinaceas - embarrassing how clueless I was to plant these moisture lovers in gravel!!!)Then there are the plants which clearly love it but are far too keen - helianthemums, nepetas, salvias, hebes - small cushions are ground swallowing mounds. Apart from lots of lavender - I have hedges of L Hidcote - the deepest blue, I do not have as many silver plants as I would like. A colony of pulsatilla does well with summer silky seedheads. Santolina and a lone artemisia (Powis Castle - another huge thing). Would like to try astelia and also celmisias. A plant grown much by Ingrid, and a revelation to me, was Limonium - violetta, I have and it looks terrific with eryngiums and stipa tenuissima. Stachys or Phlomis have, so far, failed to touch my heart and I have done verbascums to death. Still throwing out flowers is the modest Zauschneria, looking good with the last of the escholzias, Salvia greggii and microphylla are flowering profusely and unstoppable. Also, pushing out another cycle of flowers - a lovelu silver leafed mound of erodium chrysantha (might be good for you, Melissa, it is a lovely thing). However, much of this is happening out of my sight since I am woefully stuck at home in a kitchen which resembles Entebbe. A simple flooring job turned into armageddon - the massively heavy cast-iron and enamel sink is upside down on the sofa, the old washing machine has been drug to the tip and a new (to me) one has arrived - although the sink issue means it is still in the middle of the kitchen. Am running out of knickers and socks - may have to be a slut and turn them inside out since the whole water system is now only usable with a lot of fiddling about with stopcocks. In a moment of frenzy, I thought we may as well go the whole way and ripped off great swathes of old painted wallpaper - which of course, came off really easily....on one wall - the rest seems as though it was cemented in position. The ingrates (offspring) have absented themselves for large amounts of time yet still manage to materialise at sensitive (shouty, sweary) moments and chip in with ludicrous suggestions (we could put speakers in the new sink cupboards, why don't we have an indoor hammock?)Estimates of finishing time have gone from 'around a week' to 'in time for Christmas'. We are eating a lot of 'bread based snacks' - although the rate of jam consumption is worrying as I was definately slack this year, using the virusey raspberries as an excuse to cut down on all the 'earth mother' nonsense I had somehow got myself into(what was I thinking?) May be forced onto chocolate spread - sweetheart can have marmalade (shudder). Even so, it has been a spectacular tomato year (no rain - no blight)- have had kilos and kilos from 40 plants. I now have wrists of iron from poking hundreds of tomatoes through a sieve. The first bareroots will be arriving soon so I will have every reason to flee the kitchen chaos.

Hi, Letter! No problem with the questions - my pleasure. The brand and model # of the fridge is in my very first post. And yes, we have a "wall" on the right side of our fridge, too. See what's green in the above photo? That's the wall. (It "jigs" then, beside and behind the fridge) What's creamy white is all cabinet and trim. I think you can better see what I am trying to explain if you look at the two pictures of the plans, posted very early in this thread. That should make it clearer to you. Let me know. We couldn't recess the fridge, either, our steps to our upstairs are on the other side of that back wall. But I think the counter-depth fridge works nicely to really look "built-in". I really love the fridge, BTW. It is beautiful, works GREAT, holds a TON, and is so user-friendly! The granite overhangs the peninsula 11.5" and I think it's perfect. Even my 6+ foot tall hubby doesn't have any trouble. And the peninsula seating and the table nearby is also quite nice. I find that we tend to use the bar mostly for informal breakfasts and snacks, and the table for dinner. And while we don't have small children anymore (or grandbabies yet!) I can envision (for larger meals) the kids sitting at the bar while the grown-ups sit close-by at the table.

Thank you Sprice for letting me know that the floors are by Shaw and that they are the 5" plank, engineered wood. I have to have engineered wood also so now I am going to decide between Shaw and BR-111 and between 3.25" versus 5" planks. Thanks again for letting me know since I just love the color and think they look great! Thanks for letting me know that the finish is matte/satin and that they have only darkened a little bit and are easy to take care of. This is what happened to the samples I put outside in direct sunlight of Brazilian Cherry. They darkened only a little bit with more of a rich color like you said, "They now have a rich variation in tone but have not gotten just really dark, dark red. Other than tracking rock dust on them from outside they have been very easy to take care of." Your home is beautiful and thank you for sharing with all of us.

dbarron, I didn't go look. I'd have to venture into the woods and we were too busy with the grandkids all day Sunday. I could have dragged them off into the woods with us to see what we could find, but the youngest is only 4 and she thinks we live in a Bambi world where all the wildlife more or less love one another and everything lives happily ever after, so I hate to ruin that for her at such a young age. She'll learn soon enough. I also am not overly fond of stumbling upon animal carcasses because I'm just not into all that blood and gore. I thought I'd just wait and see where the vultures show up.....if they show up. Sometimes, you know, the larger predators carry their kill away. We are close enough to the Red River that they often drag away what they kill back down into the river bottomlands where they tend to roam, or sometimes the cougars cache it underneath brush. In particular, I do not want to find anyone's cache because that would be too scary. I'll tell you this, though. The deer usually come and eat their deer corn overnight. This morning, the deer corn we put out last evening was untouched. It didn't even look like bunnies or coons had been around (still muddy enough to see their tracks if they show up) overnight to nibble at the deer corn. This morning, the deer came around 8 or 8:30 a.m. to eat, and they came in a large herd, not in the usual small groups of 3 or 4. So, of course, at the very least we know that they heard what I heard, or they smelled death....or....somehow....they just know. I wish they could tell me what they know. There's not many predators that scare the deer so that narrows things down in my mind a bit. Rebecca, I do try to plan herbs somewhat, but they also have their own way of popping up in random spots---particularly the catnip. I think the cats sometimes carry catnip seeds on their fur and deposit it just wherever. When they do, I just leave it wherever it pops up. Grasshoppers love catnip and lemon balm, so both of them are early indicators of a developing grasshopper problem if I just pay attention. When I see the catnip and lemon balm leaves riddled with many, many small holes as the grasshopper hatch is occurring in Spring, I can tell from the damage level if it is going to be a bad grasshopper year or not, and if I need to order Semaspore or Nolo Bait and deal with the young hoppers or if the population is so small that I don't have to bother. That's one surprising way herbs have proven to be very useful in the garden. Dawn

I did recently paint my kitchen SW Clary Sage. I am however in the middle of remodeling the kitchen so everything is a mess. I can tell you that the window faces south and the paint definitly looks green and not grey. I really like the color. The color is represented very well on glaserberl's pics.

The house was build in 1924. Kitchen and bathroom were probably last updated (other than paint) in the 50ties. We remodeled in 2002. We didn't know that the original iron pipes in the bathroom had corroded and water was slowly leaking into the cement underlay of the bathroom floor. One day the weight became to great and the bathroom floor ended up in the kitchen. We had planned a remodel a couple years down the road. I had no time to really plan. Everything had to be picked out in a hurry, but I think for not having time to really think about layout and design it turned out pretty good.
We had some snags along the way. Somebody had done a very amateur job on the electrical updating. Our electrician just shook his had. Sometime they had added a rickety mudroom addition and when we opened everything up we found out that the whole weight of the addition rested on the back door frame. It had cracked a footing. We had to put a header through the kitchen and pour a new footing. Amazing how the house straightened out. After the header and footing I all of the sudden noticed slightly bigger gaps between the boards of the hardwood floor in the living room.
We found the original hardwood flooring in the kitchen under several layers of linoleum and other unidentified flooring.
Last year we remodeled the "finished" side of the basement.Our son resides there now. Next will be the front porch and then we "only" have the roof, windows and siding left.

Hi Gaserberl and Ideamom
The paint color looks beautiful in your kitchen Gaserberl. I am wondering if it looks best with white cabinets, mine are ash (think 80's oak)and I have mid-toned natural woodwork. In my kitchen it looks like a blue-green with gray undertones. I admit I only painted one coat over existing green paint but think it is a fairly good representation of how it will be in the room. It just seems to suck the life out of my kitchen, does that make sense? HD will not let me return the paint, so if I can't make it work for me, perhaps someone will buy it on CL. Thank you both for your input and pictures.

Are your cabinets a golden oak color? If so, this green is a very good color with the oak. I would just paint the whole room and live with it for a few days. If you still don't like it, you can change it. Show us some pics.

I wnet to SW at lunch and got samples for my kitchen (Clary Sage) and LR (Beach House). Does the CS dry darker than it looks in the container? It's looking kinda minty to me! I do have golden/honey oak cabs, and I will be painting up a board w/ it. I think I will still sample the BM Saybrook Sage and Dry Sage, too.

Hi everyone-
The Clary Sage does dry more intense than what it looks like in the can, that is the only way I can describe how it looks dry. I guess it just looks more intense because you are comparing a speck of paint with a large area of paint on the wall. Compared to the BM Saybrook Sage, which I also tried, it is about a half shade darker.

I am about to throw in the towel or should I say the paint brush? Now I am considering a neutral like SW believable buff which would match the background in my valances. The rest of my downstairs is Glidden Dapper Tan so I hesitate using another neutral. I tried the Dapper Tan in the kitchen and it turned to a pink colored tan perhaps due to the south and west exposure of light? It seems that type of lighting really brings out any undertones in the paint. Any ideas out there?

Yes, it does dry darker. Here are a few pics I managed to get during the kitchen redo.
