Here's a better (more likely to stick around) link to the new HRF Newsletter. Here is a link that might be useful: Link to the Letter on the HRF website

Yes, the loss of heritage property is terrible, because it contributes to the loss of a sense of place and history that connects people to their communities in a way that no uninspired builder special can ever do. It also reduces the examples of fine craftsmanship that built those houses. I live in an historic area, and fortunately for the cause of preservation, the South was impoverished after the Civil War, and didn't really begin to recover until air conditioning. So development did less damage here than in some other parts of the country. But like everywhere else, too much of our suburban growth seems to have given us what my DH and I call the Unites States of Generica. You could be anywhere, and the lack of meaning and grace disconnects people from any sense of common purpose. So Sochi, I understand very well how much the loss hurts your soul. I hope they have whacking good insurance, and help from whatever the local heritage society and government can supply, and the stomach to restore it.

My father, DH, DD and I were in Walmart a few months ago. I put shampoo in the basket. A while later, I noticed the shampoo was leaking out because DD accidentally sat on it. I cleaned it up and said, "Oh well." We then went and paid, and I bought the shampoo that had leaked. Later that day, my dad told me he was impressed that I had not simply put the not-full bottle back on the shelf and grabbed a full one. I said, that would not be right, and would not be fair to the next shopper who may buy it. Dad told me he was very proud of me, and I told him that throughout life he had set a good example of ethics for my brother and I. I'm far from perfect, but I can't bear to think something I do might do harm to others. So I'd say one of my role models in life is my Dad. So I guess my litmus is a) the law of the country you reside in b) whether something might do harm to another person (even if it is legal). As a former WCOM employee who quit last year because I didn't like Bernie's ethics even then, I don't see how he can sit back and see nothing wrong with collecting his $1.7mil/year pension when I know of too many people his greed harmed (including myself and my pension/401k). I'll quote Tally Sue's favorite quote (sorry TS!! for stealing this!) "First, do no harm." Too bad Bernie didn't think that way.

Norma, thanks for the great ideas. I have used a lot of black pages (actually mostly black) and some brown. I've used white for background of letters I have included. I have found that I have done my pages much more simply than most. I like to have only one or two pictures on the page so not to take away from the photo(s) itself. I'm not using stickers at all. I found some great embossed frames from scrapbooks.com and it was the only place who had them that I could find. I have a lot of great old documents I have included in the book, as well. I am having so much fun with this project! I encourage anyone with the interest for preserving their heritage with photos and documents to begin such a project. You will be glad you did!!! I have also really enjoyed this particular forum!
