Hi Everyone....

Hopefully someone can help me with finding things that I can use for my BF National Guard Album. First of all, when I asked him what color album he wanted it done in...he said Army Green (gee who would've thought? lol) or camaflouge. Well i've been doing searches and have not been able to locate either one. I managed to find some stickers and camaflouge paper at Hobby Lobby but I would really like to do a nicer album since he is a Major now. I wish there was a website just devoted to this subject as he has been in it now for almost 15 years. Any ideas? TIA! Debby

Why not cover an album with some camoflauge fabric? Somewhere a while ago I saw a site with instructions on how to cover albums. I'll look for it and get back to you if I can locate it.

I'd probably pick some solid paper in some formal military colors - Army green, tan, off-white, or whatever. I'd embellish with silver, gold , bronze, or whatever looked best.

You may not be able to find Army green or whatever the official colors are. You could improvise with olive green or whatever colors come the closest.

We are getting polyester mosquito netting and only a few yards at first. We want to determine how much light gets inside and for testing of strength. With the preliminary testing we will also know if the claims of the manufacturer are correct. We are doing the research and planning now and DH will probably build over the winter. How to kill the SVB grubs that are currently in the soil?? We are looking at beneficial nematodes and DE for starters. ninjabut, Thanks for the idea but we will have really long zipper to go in and out. Just found this idea online for a mosquito net intended for bedroom use. DL

I don't think they're cowboy hats. They're pins. They're more like a roughrider hat that the cavalry wore. I thought they might be part of a uniform. The other metal pins and tags say S.&.W.E.C. and M.R.E.P. CO. Those are white rocks of some sort - with sparkly gray running through them. I don't know if that's a ladies purse or some sort of ditty bag for men. The coin purse is double clasped. The center leather piece is missing from the frame, but I can see where it was stitched at one time so that it was a shallow coin purse one side and a longer one on the other. It's about 6" long. The paint brush is as soft as baby hair and doesn't look like it's been used. The red tip on the end looks like it was put there for a reason -- dunno. Those other metal things (I forget what they're called) are like victorian souvenir advertisements. One says "Dog On" Good Whiskey (there's more writing on the back -from Kentucky; the other is from the Alaska -Yukon - Pacific Exposition - Seattle 1909. Thanks for your input.

Lynn, all the feelings you're encountering, and more, are very, very normal and something that many others go through. As a former military wife, and present day military mother, I can relate to every thought and emotion that you're presently experiencing. My son is in the Air Force, as his dad used to be, and has been deployed to Iraq four times, twice for tours lasting over a year in duration. He's also done duty in Afghanistan and been deployed to other "hot" areas in the past that aren't mentionable. His military service was the key reason why my husband and I raised our grandson, my divorced son's child, for the first 12 years of his life - because dad was overseas and couldn't be there to raise him himself. My son was never a clinger, nor was I, and I'm also the one in our family who's always been positive in attitude with a a cup more than half full. Fortunately, I've always had a solid, close relationship with my first born and he's felt the freedom to make his own choices based on what he wants. Even so, your feeling of loss of control over your son's life is one that I can identify with, and understand, because I felt much the same way when he first signed up. Now it is more important than ever for you to take good care of yourself, and not let your concerns interfere with the quality of your health and sleep patterns. If they do, you need to seek the guidance of a physician for some sleep aids. I found that keeping regular contact with my son helped enormously, and thanks to present day communication methods, this was possible. We were able to email back and forth often and he was able to make a few pre-scheduled phone calls. When he first got in the service he was deployed to Korea for a year, and back then our only contact was by snail mail - nowadays communication is so much easier! For the long tours I spent a lot of time putting together packages to send, with notes, food, candy, personal items - whatever I thought he could use or enjoy. He loved getting packages from home. You didn't mention what branch of the military he is serving with, but I'm sure they all offer similar support groups for military families. I would urge you to find out what support groups are available for your son's unit, and get in contact with them. When my husband was in service, and deployed, we had a very active wives support group that kept all of us sane and much comforted. Being able to share your feelings with others in the same situation, who are also harboring similar concerns, is invaluable therapy and I urge you to take advantage of whatever groups are available. I will say that the situational depression I first felt eventually worked itself out, with reoccurrences every time he deployed again, but having someone to talk to, to share my feelings with, (other than him), was key to getting my head clear so I could continue to function on an even keel again. My heart goes out to you - and my thoughts will be with you. You'll feel more like yourself again, and you'll be okay, I promise.

If you go to PO Monday just pick up a customs form--they helped me with my first one--LOL--very easy- As far as listing everything, NO, I usually just said candy & cookies--Pack it as full as you can (20 lbs, I think) I taped the ends shut, but you CAN'T use duct tape--My baking is horrible, so I always send Oreos & bubble wrap them-- Heres a list of what I sent for Thanksgiving--- Cookies, gum, beef jerkys, water balls, Pringle tater chips, powdered drinks, candy bars & about 30 Tootsie Roll pops--The suckers really go over big! My GS said he takes a few things from the box & then puts the rest on a share table!! LOL I can't remember everything else I sent (old age) Tell your nephew thank you from me! If all goes as planned, my GS sdhould be home for good the wk before Christmas! Boy, are we all excited! Donna (^_^)

I'd be careful going to too much green, since the most of the Coast Guard colors I have seen are Red, white and blue! Stickapotamus even makes Coast Guard stickers. My ex was in the Navy for 15 years and I was a military brat, so I know a little about the service. When doing the military photos I have I have added real fabric patches, you can find these at walmart, they have eagles, anchors, stars, etc. that look good and add a touch of class that a regular die cut can't. I have also added patches that came directly off of my ex's uniform. For military pages HOTP makes a military booklet of papers but I think they only come in 8.5 x 11 but you can check on their website, to tell for sure. For some of the pro uniform shots I used backgrounds of marble look paper, and added stripes or ensignia's to match those on the uniforms. HTH. Love Penny

My husband was in the military and I have had lots of luck finding military kits, camo letters, paper stickers, etc. E-mail me if you want the scoop.

There is a few websites devoted to the subject. My husband is also in the military and I was running myself rampid looking for military things. But when I started laying out the photos of the places he has been like when he was in Panama I realized I didn't need camo. Panama was filled with beaches, palm trees, vines etc. I paper pieced dog tags, parachuttes, medals etc.

A lil tip for ya though, go to where you can have access to a color copier and color copy some of his military things. For instance I color copied his dog tags for a nifty boarder, some of his patches, and used his desert fatigue uniform and color copied it because I couldn't find desert fatigue paper.

Wow, you guys are GREAT! Since I've posted, I've had lots and lots of replies! I haven't started his album yet but getting ready to this fall. Now I almost can't wait! LOL Too many other projects in the way til then but i've saved all the ideas. If you have any new ones or "discover" something not mentioned here....feel free to post it. I can always use more. Now that he is a "Major" I have many many pages to do. Can always use more ideas! I've been watching the fashion trends in Camaflouge hoping that maybe it takes off like the Leopard Skins did. Maybe we'll be seeing Camaflouge albums soon too! As scarey as it is...the tv program "Boot Camp" did us Military scrappers some good! :) Thanks Again!
