Bleach down the drain?

We have a problem with tree roots invading our pipes. The plumber told us to put salt down the drains once a month to keep the roots from coming through the pipes anymore. I think that since bleach does break down to salt and water, that it might be easier and just as effective to put a gallon of bleach down the drains (collectively-not a gallon in each one!) once a month. My husband does not agree, but I have heard of people pouring bleach down the pipes before. Do you think that the bleach would work to keep the roots away, or is the table salt DH insists on the only way to go?
