HELP!!! What materials are the first to buy

I am just starting out and get overwhelmed when I go to the store to buy materials. Can you give me some hints as to which are the firsts to purchase....

Dear Lisa,
I would go for the following no matter what size album you are currently working on:
12 x 12 fiskars personal trimmer
1 set of the primary colors of pens -red, blue, black, yellow
1 set of the pastels colors of gel pens
1 border punch
The coluzzle cutting starter system-just wish I had found this when I first started, saves TONS of time.
1 corner rounder punch
1 pair of decoritive scissors, don't get anymore till you find out whether or not you will use them as this is the most unwanted item after you get going.
1 or 2 simple templates if you can't afford the coluzzle system of ovals or other simple shapes.
1 pair of REALLY good small pointed scissors.
1 exacto Knife
1 self healing cutting mat
A small assortment of colored cardstock in both primary and pastels
Patterned paper, die cuts, and stickers only for the photo you are working on at the time, until you have more money. Penny

First, you didn't flunk Lawn 101. You got a B in 2006, a C in 2007 (for late seeding) and an A so far in 2008. Nothing you did was wrong, but the timing for seeding was off a bit. 1) Round Up. We hesitate to mention specific chemical names for companies. The generic glyphosate works just fine and it's essentially the same stuff. Also, so many of us are organic and the R word stuff isn't. 2) Compost and peat moss will both decay away in about five years, so the soil is going to settle. Certainly you can mix either lightly (say, an inch or so every ten inches of soil), or skip it and use organic feeding methods. If your soil is really bad, I'd mix it. You can usually get compost from your local garden store, big box store, or delivered bulk from a supplier. The other option is to use 1/4" as a topdress for your seeding. Over time, the decay products work into the soil and enrichen it, plus you kill two birds with one stone and don't need to otherwise mulch the seed. Plus, the worms like it. :-) 3) Go right ahead and use it. If it was stored in a cold garage, it's completely fine. If stored in a warm house, you lose some germination but it's not that significant over six months. You can't wait too much longer for a spring seeding (and might want to consider using Siduron or Tupersan as a pre-emergent when seeding). So you probably don't have time to wait for the soil results. That's OK, you can work on correcting those issues afterward. Right now, get it sprouted--the seed has all the resources it needs for the first few weeks of its life. Once you get that test back you'll know what to add.

Smittee, I agree with funsocaltiger about the local ones being bigger than what you get from those mail order ones. I haven't ordered anything through the mail yet, although I've heard some good reports from those who do. I find buying from the local stores allow me to poke around with the plants, check if they're healthy and finally take my pick. I usually scout for them at Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart and even K-mart. Plus some other local nurseries if they happen to sell them. You'll most likely find Cavendish variety (whether it's the tall, dwarf or superdwarf specie). Occasionally, you may get something nice. I got my Kru from HD, Zebrina from Walmart. One Walmart also had some Basjoo. One thing nice with shopping locally is if you find something wrong with the plants, you can almost always bring them back for a refund. I brought one of the diseased cavendish back to K-mart one day and they took back their plant. Talking about diseased plants, make sure you look out for smelly juice oozing out from the pseudostem. It's a sign of virus infection. If you are just starting, you may find Cavendish a good one to start out with because they're the most easily available ones and fairly cold tolerate too although there was one winter when one of mine died. However, the corm didn't really die. The following spring, it had a new plant. Choose some more disease and cold tolerant ones to avoid some heartaches. I haven't planted them long enough to know for sure, but Ice Cream, Praying Hands and Manzano seem to be quite hardy. Hope you find something you like to plant soon. I have decided to get the royal Albert lady Carlyle mainly because the tea cup is so cute and a lot more feminine looking than the noritake one plus the pattern is so beautiful! I had my eyes on this pattern for a while now and i thought it was discontinued but to my surprise it was still sold on the royal Albert website for even cheaper than ebay!! thank you for all your help! I can't wait to have tea parties with my girlfriends:))

We did the buy and sell at the same time too. Like others have commented, it is a wee bit stressful. You can find my saga on Gardenweb if you are interested, but here is the long and short of it. I took a new job and after having a longer commute than I was used to, we decided to think about moving. We were casual lookers at first (it was over the holidays last year) found a house that we liked and put an offer on it thinking it would be like our last purchase where we just had a contingency on the sale of our house. Personally, I wasn't willing to risk making the purchase without having a safety net just in case we ran into problems selling our house. Apparently times had changed (to put it lightly) in the 8 years since we had done just that so they pretty much laughed at our contingency. So, we regrouped, decided to contact a REA, see what we needed to do to get our house market ready and sell in the spring when more people were looking. She called us a week later and told us that she had an interested person they came, they looked, they offered. So we sold our house but had no prospects, I didn't want to move twice, and had a list of "must haves" a mile long in a very small area of the city. We probably looked at 100 houses in a month period, made several offers, realized my husband and I didn't like the same things, suppressed the urge to throttle him more times than I can remember, considered seperate houses so we could each get what we want, had a contract, lost a contract, fired our REA, found a new REA, got down to the minute (seriously...at the last day where it likely would work for us to not have to move twice) and found a house, closed on both the same day, moved in one day, and have been blissfully happy ever since. To top the stress off, I was in my 6 month "probation" time at work so did all this with only taking off 1/2 day from work. Would I recommend it? Well, now that time has passed and I am experiencing the end result, I can say it was worth it. At the time, I was wound as tight as a drum and seriously wonder how we made it through without a divorce. So would I recommend it, probably not. Good luck! As somebody who loves to look at houses, it seems like it will be fun, but in reality it just isn't.

Yep, Kelly she will need an album but I didn't mention it on purpose. A LOT of times only after a scrapper has be scrapping for a while do they decide which albums they like best. I figured it is a large investment and it might be best if she waited till she looked around at some different styles of them before choosing one. But rereading the list I did forget to mention page protectors. Those you can always use later to power scrap with so they are not a loss if your album comes with them. Penny

Kelly, I did get myself a nice album 12X12 and paid a pretty penny for it too....I couldn't believe how much it was, but that's what you get for living in a small town.

Penny, Thanks for the list, it will help me out when I go shopping this weekend. I thought about buying one of those books with the page protectors but didn't, now I wish I had as I have been asking around the pros and cons for starting with this one.

Oh well, have to start somewhere.

Gee Penny she just wanted a small list I started out with just paper and stickers. Of course 7 years later i have EVERYTHING under the sun for scrapbooking. Unlike Penny though i LOVE my decorative scissors and use em all the time and I dont like the coluzzel thing at all in fact i gave mine away. i would suggest a circle or oval cutter though. good luck!!!

Oh My God Tracy I can't believe you gave away your coluzzle!!!! I just bought one, and love it! Where in the world was I when you gave this away? Any more cast offs better head this way. LOL Love Penny

I think Penny's list is right on. We could recommend starting with inferior tools like templates, just to make her suffer the way we did when we first started, but in the long run she will discover the tools Penny listed are the best, so why not save her all the pain and agony! LOL

Maybe for your very first layout, you could splurge and buy a package deal that includes pattern and solid papers with matching die cuts and stickers. It can be so intimidating when you first start to make choices and cut pictures(not for me, I am one of those forge ahead and work out the details later kind of people) and to see a slick layout your first time can boost your confidence and creativity. I agree with everyone above about "primary" tools, I just know different things work depending on your personality. I started collecting supplies for several years before I actually sat down and did my first page. The first few years of homeschooling absorbed all of me and after my Mom died it was a HUGE blessing to have scrapbooking to get addicted to. I wish she could have seen my stuff. I just started a Heritage album for her. The black and white photo's I do worry about cutting and make copys to work on. Just starting to add toners and those new litle smudgy markers. You may want to check your local scrapping stores, they almost always have classes or open forums where you can use their tools or borrow from each other and buy papers, stickers, die cuts, etc as you go along. Kind of like running a bar tab*G* Good way to learn, share, make new friends and not break the bank! Mostly just have fun. My girlfriend started scrapping but was a wreck all the time that she was "doing" it wrong. I told her this probably was not the hobby for her, at least not now. I think she was relieved!
