I'm Finally Getting There! (Pics)

Back in April I posted about the problems I was having finding a big enough dining room set. And then, in May, I found it . . . a beautiful mahogany set from a local consignment shop along with antique mahogany chests of drawers. We've been enjoying the new pieces ever since.

Meanwhile, I've been searching everywhere for some bright accent pieces and new dinnerware for the room. Although we have a great set of antique china that I inherited, our everyday dishes were pretty chipped and I couldn't serve more than 5 people with them. But, I was waiting for inspiration to hit . . . and it FINALLY did!

Forgive me for forgetting who, but someone here suggested that I should use some Talavara pieces in my home and the lights went on! Many thanks for the idea, BTW! Well, one thing led to another and I not only found my new set of everyday dishes (on sale at Macy's), but bought a long Talavara planter to use as a centerpiece on my 9 1/2 foot table. I've filled it with ~ yes, the much maligned silk ;^P ~ sunflowers and ivy. I ordered the hand-loomed runner from an internet site that promotes weavings from the women in a small village in Mexico. It arrived last week and I love how the yellow brightens up the room.

Anyhoo, I wanted to thank you all again for your help and encouragement with my dining room makeover. It's still a work in progress, but I'm excited to show you pics of how it's progressing.

I LOVE THE NEW SET! I really like the Talavera pieces also. I've always loved them. Have you seen their sinks on ebay? You did a great job. Always enjoy seeing pics of your house.

Oh no--not you, too Deb!!! I've heard it advised here, by those who know more than I, that you should hold on to even the ratty ones, because they still will take in chlorophyll that aids in their overall development for the following years. I've experienced it to be true, that if done (you remove leaves), the plants do come back smaller that following year, which demonstrates the need for those leaves, no matter how unsightly they be!! There may be more eyes but they will certainly be smaller! I had some hail a few years ago (not too bad) and my 'Francee' looked like swiss cheese the whole season. If I'd removed their leaves, there wouldn't have been much left. Thankfully, that was BEFORE the extreme addiction and frenzied acquiring of my habit!!! Maybe someone can design a type of 'burka'(sp) for hail riddled hosta--that allows the important elements of sunlight in, but hides the pitiful sight for the season--'the Summer of our discontent', as it may be!!

1 1/2 acre - lucky you. I've been gathering up some Japanese tree peonies - they are stunningly beautiful, and the tree gets bigger each year. If you shop around for the closing out of garden centres (like I do), there are deals to be had. Sativa.

Aww shucks!! Thanks for all the good wishes! Adopted, you have *no* idea. Some of the details I left out were as follows: -The first time I ever walked onto that property (more than 2 years ago), I "felt" as if it were mine. I even called my DH and told him that I thought we should look at this house, because it feels like ours. To my utter shock, he came over and said the same thing. -After talking ourselves out of/back into the house, we go see it again. (This time, I was the realtor.) I get that same feeling again. -We put the offer on it last summer. I tell my DH that I "know this first offer won't go through, but I feel like we're supposed to make it anyway. I know they won't take it, but I feel like we'll come to better terms later." I tell everyone I know the same thing. When the deal didn't work out, I wasn't all that disappointed. -When trying to work out the contract, the sellers tell me that there are 2 other couples that have made offers. I "know" immediately that they won't work out. I tell DH that I normally would be worried, but I'm not, because I just know it's our house. Weird, huh?? And Snookums, I will be posted ad infinitum on the pool forum....the pool area of the new house is a disaster!!! Again, good bones, but needs *so* much work. Wheeee!!!

You are truly a decorator after my own heart! I love what you've done! The new set is beyond fabulous -- it's perfect for your room. I'm a total Talavera freak, so I love your new pieces as well. Would you share the site where you found the weaving?

I love your table and your room. I have a small bowl that matches and it holds a LOT of homemade guac, btw! what a great job you have done.

Mlraff: yes, in fact we had lots of Talavara tile in our old kitchen and we still have it in all three bathrooms. The powder room has the Talavara sink, too.This is an older pic, as we've since replaced the faucet and towel bar with antiqued bronze ones.

That whole room is everything I love when I look through photos online or in mags. The room is perfection plus!

What I love most are the two chests, one on each side of the double doors.
They add equal weight to the area without being symmetrical/perfectly matched pieces. I'm an Asymmetrical kinda gal so that whole view is just magnificent to me!

I have the exact same T. oval planter (?), same blue/yellow design and I have no place to put it.
Yours looks spectacular as a centerpiece with the sun flowers!

Your PR just overflows with charm and I'm sure you bumped it up a notch with the new faucet/towel bar in the darker tones.

As always, everything you did is beautiful, just beautiful!

Cooperbailey: I only bought two of the bowls, as they're so darn big! I'm planning on buying some smaller, plain colored ones in the green or red soon. But, I love your idea of using them for small serving bowls, for guac and such. Great idea!

Jaybird, I found mine at a small local garden center that specializes in Talavara. They had a number of them in a all sizes and colors. You need to buzz on over here and pick one up . . . along with a nice margarita ;^P

Amity, you have the same planter?!? How cool! I'm thinking that it could also work well as a big bottle (wine/beer/soda) cooler at parties, although I'd probably faint if someone chipped it! Or how about a magazine holder someplace? Hope you can find a use for yours.

Thanks again for all your kind words here. I'm working on a new chandelier and rug next, but that (Phase 3) might have to wait quite a while longer!

Lynn, it's so beautiful!

I love ceramics and have found that the colors are great for inspiration. Doesn't matter if it's Mexican, Italian, Moroccan or any other kind. They bring such life to a room.

You have done a great job. I love your furniture, brick walls and yes, your flowers. :) Your tilework is amazing, too. When I look at the kitchen I love on "Two and a Half Men" one of the things I love the most is the tile in their kitchen. If someone could just figure out what to do about the grout for a sloppy cook like me.

ohhhh beautiful, that is the Tangier set correct? I almost went with that as well (we are from Morocco, not Tangier though)

Lynne, It is simply gorgeous, I love the room and all the unique pieces in it. The new set is perfect, I doubt you could rver find anything better, it just belongs in that lovely room. You have a wonderful style.

Parma, I know what you mean about the color of the Talavara ceramics . . . they're so fresh and colorful. I'm sometimes amazed, though, at how well some of the color combinations work together. Our "Before" kitchen had a gorgeous Talavara tile in it. I was sorry to see it go, although it was restricting as far as what we could put in there with it. BTW, our cream colored grout never got stained, and I'm also a messy cook ;^P

Joann, it took years for us to find antique pieces that would fit in those spaces. I'm still somewhat shocked that we did and that they're in such good shape!

Vegas, you're right, it is their Tangier line! So which set did you end up getting????
