White cabinets--what besides marble, soapstone or AB?

What other countertops are people doing with white cabs besides marble, soapstone or black? I have white cabinets now with verde butterfly. I want to do something different in my new house but don't necessarily want to do one of the three listed above. Any help would be great. My accent colors will be green and yellow. I like the classic look of marble, but want to see what else might be out there. I am not doing a "vintage" kitchen, but not an overly dressy one either. Thanks for any ideas or pictures.

Butcherblock, tile, stainless steel, copper, possibly some of the more folden granites if they work with your yellow.

While our new kitchen has white cabinets with marble on the perimeter, our last kitchen, which we loved had white cabinets with New Venetian Gold granite, and a creamÂish tumbled marble backsplash.

egganddart, The cabinets I'm going with are called Cabico. There are other lines that are environmentally friendly also. I'm going with Cabico because they are mid priced even though they are custom. And my sister in law can get me her builder's discount! If you google 'green building supplies' or 'green cabinetry', etc. you'll find other manufacturers. Also I believe Green Depot sells a non formaldehyde brand. More and more will be available not only in cabinets but also in furniture. It's about time! Sofas, and mattresses, for example, are very toxic made the 'usual' way. I've paid a small fortune to buy special mattresses, sofa and love seat to by pass all the off gasing. Here's the sofa/loveseat I just bought from Vancouver (I live in CT). The shipping was $900.00!!! (Which took me by surprise). But I LOVE them. They are made from pure rubber mixed with a natural mineral to make them non flammable. They are wrapped in cotton and wool. I paid extra for down fill also and I chose wool for the upholstery material. Wool is a great sofa material. It has natural lanolin in the material which helps to resist stains. If you spill something and blot it right away, it doesn't sink in. I spilled red wine on it the first day (can you believe it???) and it blotted off completely. I also paid $150. approx for a fabric warranty. If the fabric ever gets stained for any reason, an upholstery cleaner comes to the house. If they can't remove the stain they have to replace the material! I should have 'fluffed' them up for the photo. But even 'unfluffed' they are VERY COMFY on top of being very environmentally friendly. As a matter of fact, all of their pieces are biodegradable and the manufacturer (Upholstery Arts) will take the furniture back when you are done with it for 'financial rewards'. SecondHalf, hi. I meant to answer your RI fabricator question, but now don't see the thread, so I'll post here. We used Minas Granite (though I think they are changing their name to Black Diamond Granite). I know they work with granite and marble, but don't know about soapstone. The owner, Geneci Silva, was very patient, sending us to several stone importers until we finally found the stone we liked. Then he stored it for us until we could get started. Once we were ready for countertops, he was out to template within a few days and the counters were ready within a week. We needed an l-shape with a sink and cooktop cutout + runnels on both sides of the sink. We wanted a curved end to the peninsula part of the L; he and his operations guy spent about an hour with me, laying out how the curves should look for the best appearance. Together we also laid out the counters on the stone (it took two slabs) so that what I thought was the best part of the stone would be in the most visible places. Geneci and the ops guy also listened to what I wanted for the sink cut out and the runnels. That part turned out just perfect. From GardenWeb Photos They are a small operation and don't have high tech equipment, such as lasers for measuring or computer-driven cutting. I don't know how important that is to you. We used some of the remaining granite for a buffet top and for various surfaces for the bathroom that we also were updating. Again, Geneci was very sensitive to time issues and getting the material to us so that the bathroom work was not held up. The company is listed as being in Providence, but the fabrication shop is in Assonet (Exit 11 on Rt. 24). If you'll email me, I'll send you Mr. Silva's phone number.

Sankaty Thanks for the compliment! I love my Deltana pulls. They have a nice flat finish that matches well with the latches and with the soapstone. I think a single pull will be fine on a 36" drawer. The dishwasher is to the right of the sink and, yes, it is panelled. It is a Miele Optima and ordered specifically for panelling. The panel was ordered along with the cabinets and slipped right on. Check with Kitchen Aid to determine if your model can take a custom panel. One reason why we chose the Miele is because of how the panel is flush with the rest of the cabinets. Some DW with panel kits stick out a little. They are not trully flush. I forget which brands but I think Kitchen Aid is one.

THanks so much, Willow. Yes, the marble is polished. The slab came that way, and I thought it was going to get honed, but it didn't. I decided to try it out like that, partly because it's so pretty, and partly because I thought the kitchen needed a little bling -- muted colors, matte soapstone, brushed stainless, why not try something polished? I do not baby it. I haven't left red wine on it all night or anything, but it doesn't seem to stain at all. I do not know what sealer they used; I will contact the fabricator and find out. It was in a big jug with no label, just sharpie pen "marble sealant" or something like that. I imagine they just refill from larger containers. Yes, there are etches. I pay little attention to them, they certainly don't jump out. There is so much going on in there, that frankly I don't think they are very noticeable. I get a lot of natural light, so there are trees reflected in it. And there are tons of different colors and shadows already, maybe you can see from the pic of the slab. Not only white and gray and gold but black and rust and beige and pale pale gray, etc. So maybe it's different than having something a little less active. Or maybe I just don't see things that others do. But so far, it's been wonderful!

Could also go with Quartzite. Has the look of marble but is harder than granite. Yes, it is a natural stone. Could also go with a different type of granite. There are lots of them out there in a million of different colors.

I keep going to granite/stone yards and haven't found the "right" thing yet. I do like Tropical Green. I have Verde Butterfly and that has been nice. I picked up a sample of Black Pearl (or something like that) from TopMasters (is this a national place?). It looks almost like my green. Anyway, I was just trying to get ideas. Thanks for the input.

Is Quartzite porous? What do people know about Jerusalem Stone?

Hi there,
We've chosen cream cabinets called "Palomino" with a dark stained island. Walls are painted BM Spanish Olive colour and hardwood is a dark but warm oak. (I'm sorry I don't have photos to post as the granite will be installed this Friday.) Our granite will be Brown Antique on the perimeters. The Brown Antique is a dark, quiet beauty, no movement as I didn't want my countertops to be a focal point. The sample works beautifully with the other warm colours we've chosen. I've seen something called 'recycled glass' countertops in a few magazines lately, which are pretty darn cool looking. I have no idea how expensive it is, what you can or can't do on it, but it is recycled, which is always a good thing, and it sure it pretty! Here's a link for you...

There are sooooo many choices for you. The options are:

Glass

Granite

Quartz

Metal

Paper (yes, paper!)

Recycled countertops (made of various materials and mixtures)

Concrete (not the stuff you see on the sidewalk)

I've seen some beautiful kitchens lately that have poured concrete counters on white cabs--love it. It's a soft, monochromatic look, similar to marble but less, as you say, "dressy." I've seen it mostly in "cottage-y," if not vintage, style kitchens, but I could see it working in a more contemporary plan, too.

I also like light or dark-finished wood counters on white cabs. Good luck!
