Old foundation gets in the way

I've to dig 42 inches down to make concrete footings for my new porch. I'm using 22-inch Square Foot footings going into 10 inch Sonotubes. The soil is sandy clay.

I ran into a problem about 24 inches below ground. There's a stone-and-mortar foundation down there. It's about a yard wide, and runs parallel to the front of my home. Unfortunately it's exactly where I want to place the concrete footings.

I've already removed some of the foundation. The stones are heavy and tightly packed. Much of the mortar holding them together is brittle enough to be broken with bare hands.

My question...

Would it be structurally sound to merely place the footings on top of the old founddation ? It is not flat at all and would need to be levelled for the footing.

...or...

Should I purchase a pick-axe and sledgehammer to break up and remove the foundation ? I "someday" plan to make use the porch roof as a second-story porch. I do not want the footings to shift or be undermined in the future.

Thanks in advance !

Marco
