Pruning Old Apples (and a Pear) to get them back into Fruiting.
Comments (8)Hi Infiniteohms. Well, I thought I would try to take a shot at this in the hopes of learning something from the corrections I'd get later! But I had trouble seeing the trees well enough to figure out just what to do. But basically, thin, simplify, head back. Branches that point straight down from scaffolding branches can generally just be removed, and most that go up vertically can too, although it's worth noting that a few of the verticals can be kept to bear, especially when kept short. Branches pointing to the interior of the tree can come out. If it doesn't get sun the fruit won't thrive, so stuff in the shaded interior or underside of the tree can go, as can small branches that are struggling. Of course crossers and rubbers gotta be negotiated. Also the biennial fruiting habit is easy to deal with by heavily thinning fruit as early as possible. Remove all but one fruit from each cluster- and consider removing every other cluster completely. I've only been doing this a few years, but it's definitely worth your time and effort, and it's not hard. Much easier than dealing with a bunch of stunted fruit later. A rule of thumb is that you don't remove more than a third of the tree per year. Great- in only three years you can completely eliminate the problem! :-) And, you might consider whether rejuvenation is the route you want to take, when by planting new you could have your choice of cultivars, probably on better rootstock. Still, you do have history on your side: those three trees have proven themselves to be survivors, and then there's all that root system established and ready to go to work for you! Just thoughts, and I hope other opinions will be better informed than mine, so pay attention to those. I'll hang around and listen to the discussion and see what I can pick up. Thanks for sharing the photos. Good luck, M...See MoreOld foundation gets in the way
Comments (11)sdello:"You're the only one that is screamng from a soap box" My, my...now who's being melodramatic? ;-) With regard to your question on building inspectorsÂ...... they have been investigated extensively in my state of NJ...and many were found to be incompetent and/or unethical. There are indeed both the good and the bad...and the in between. As far as home inspectors are concerned...I consult to the profession on a national basis...and there are the good and bad and the in between in that profession as well. This is a given. That said, there are no guarantees on ANYTHING...but there is a HUGE difference between taking advice from a virtual unknown entity Â..such as a poster on an internet forumÂ..who, as I said before, could be a 10 year old...perhaps with nothing better to do between gaming but give unqualified advice...and an actual and a verifiable entity. After all, if this was a forum for discussing finances, would it be prudent for a reader to take their life savings and invest it in a stock on the advice of another poster....since, after all, there are many crooked investment brokers...so, an anonymous internet poster is just as reliable? If you believe so, I have a hot stock tip for you.....I know its hot because I read about investing in a book at the library. ;-) All kidding aside, hopefully, this time around, you will get the point, because the fact that you even asked that question...and the fact that you apparently needed to resort to an ad hominem attack in an attempt to make a point, and the fact that you seem to think that anybody can equivocally understand and implement code from a book found in the library...which BTW, is more often than not outdatedÂ..only serves to prove my point even further....that internet advice from an unquantifiable entity is basically worthless. Now, that said, you donÂt need to agreeÂnor do you even need to read what I may write. You are free to move onÂso enjoy. Stock, anyone? ;-D...See MoreHaven't been to this forum in ages, but need help with kitchen layout
Comments (34)I like MamaGoose's plan! Moving the clean up sink down to the other end, really frees up your serving area. I would add a prep sink...and maybe an under counter fridge and ice maker. This should keep the drinks and guests out of your main work area. And maybe add some chips and snack on the other side, below the counter...to keep people out of your pantry/walking through your work area : ) As for the large foyer...I like it! But maybe add French doors between the foyer and entry hall. They could be frosted (with a design?) or add sheers, so you can shut them if someone comes to the door and you don't want them to see straight through your house. This is a nice feature if you have anyone showing that you don't know or you're home alone. I want to include something like that in our farmhouse if/when we remodel, so people can't see past the entry. But we do live out in the country...and have some "interesting" people showing up to ask about hunting or selling oranges, etc. LOL...See MoreHow do I get back to "Seniorgal" my long time name on this forum?
Comments (6)Senior girl I found an old posting of yours as suggested above. I am linking it here. I hope you can get back to a facsimile of your original name. Plus I hope you found a more accommodating hairdresser. I would have been out of there at the first sign of disrespect. :-). 12 years ago I know. https://www.gardenweb.com/discussions/2256174/hairdresser-trying-to-get-rid-of-me...See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
