porcelain or ceramic subway tile for backsplash?

Hi all,

I am going to have 4 'working shelves' in my kitchen (i.e. open shelving that will hold my everyday whites). Dishes will be coming on and off the shelves several times a day. In addition, hands that do not want to unload the dishes, will be distracted by thinking about what 'the boy said' or whether or not our favorite sport team will be going to the playoffs will be putting dishes on and off the shelves. My point is I don't think the backsplash will be babied. Would I be better off going with a porcelain or even marble backsplash?

I may be wrong but it is hard to imagine that either ceramic or porcelain back splash tiles will be vulnerable unless may-be they had very delicate relief trim. -- Picturing the scenarios that you described I think I would be more worried about whether to get super durable dishes.

I'd agree with what Sayde said. Get what you like of any of those materials and it should be fine. The dishes, maybe not...;-) But I completely understand what goes on when those who would rather be doing almost anything else are performing the task!

Thanks everyone! I'm usually a believer of "you get what you pay for" so that's why I'm a little worried about buying the cheap tile. However, it's the perfect color - I can't find another one that coordinates as well as the cheap one! It's either the cheap ceramic subway or white dolomite marble in 2" x 6". We'll have dark, distressed wood floors, white cabs with vintage finish, raven caesarstone on the perimeter and cambria torquay on the island. Our family room and kitchen are one big, long rectangle so they need to coordinate. Our family room has mostly cool colors - blue, gray, white and espresso. Any thoughts??

I am going to take pictures and upload them later today - headed over there right now - but my builder is suggesting using the 3x6 bullnose on the long edge and running it perpendicular. I know that is how this is usually done in a bathroom but what about a backsplash? Our counters are L shaped with the fridge at one end so this is only an issue at one end (the open one). The other option would be to use another one of their options for trimming it out on the end, like a molding of some sort, but I don't know that they would have one that would work. Any thoughts? Do people usually just run one edge of perpendicular bullnose? I guess theoretically that could be cut down to a super skinny bullnose but that may look even worse. Or a pencil liner???? The ceramic tile photo link doesn't work. I like subway tiles because they tend to have less grout than the small glass ones that are more popular now. I just feel less grout means less cleaning. Maria Killiam the color consultant says in her blog that glass back splash will get outdated soon. He recommendation is to stick to solid color subway tiles...preferably in shades of white. I plan to follow her advise in my kitchen.

I was just reading in the Remodeling forum and Dragonfly Tile and Stoneworks, a respected and knowledgeable tiler, recommended Adex Neri tile for a tile that is uniform and has many sizes and trims. Sierra Sand looks close to your tile. Silver Mist looks like a greige on my screen. Studio, another collection, has a translucent glaze that is very pretty. Actually, in the current usage, the words "porcelain" and "ceramic" don't mean much where tile is concerned. The manufacturers use them interchangably. Honest to goodness porcelain bisque is a bit stronger than ordinary ceramic, so get porcelain dishes. :) As long as you have a durable glaze, any kind of fired tile, correctly installed, will be a lot stronger than your dishes, no matter what, because the mortar behind them, and the wall behind that, prevents the pushed place from breaking the plane.
